Defect Summary:

On certain motorcycles, an improperly designed throttle position

sensor could cause an intermittently unstable idle when the engine is at

idling speed when the motorcycle is stopped or during low-speed

operations. The engine could stall as a result.

Consequence Summary:

If the engine stalls after the operator disengages the clutch in a

low gear while riding, the rear tire might slip momentarily if the

operator abruptly re-engages the clutch. This could result in a crash

with injury or death.

Corrective Summary:

Dealers will replace the throttle position sensor free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin on October 11, 2006. Owners may contact

Yamaha at 1-888-88-yamaha.

So, is the TPS on the '06 better than the one on the '05? I know it is different, and probably more durable, but it it better?

Interesting - but the symptoms they describe are nothing like what I experienced as the TPS failed. Not until the very end anyway.

Wonder if I can just get a free TPS to install myself when and if the one I just installed goes bad in the future...

Well, isn’t that nice…. I’ve dropped my 2006 twice, once on each side when the engine stalled while I was making a 180-degree turn from a stop in parking lots. The damage from those tip overs was over $1500, to replace the items scratched. I wonder if Mother Yamaha will compensate me for that damage.. Bet not!!!!!

Well, at least I now know I was right…. The damn engine just quit!!!!!!!!! :dribble: :blink: :angry: :assassin:

Nope, our 06's apparently are perfect, since they have a different TPS sensor. They just have something else dorked up that won't be recalled until you no longer have the bike.

From the NHTSA documents, these are the FJRs that are affected by the recall. Not all 2005s are affected.

That's for all of the "campaign". 06V371000 covers more years and models than just the '05 and FJR.

Interesting nugget though. It might be possible to narrow down product runs if there are other recalls on different model lines.

I'm in, and mine works perfectly. Mebbe I can latch onto a spare, if the dealer doesn't have to turn in warranty parts (most don't, unless they've been bad and are under audit). Good thread, valuable info on the forum, rare and wonderful.......

Damn, not a list I wanted to make. RP09Y...000190, just 9 units inside the range listed. This will be an interesting conversation with my dealer Thursday.

OK, this may be a dumb question, but should I expect a letter from Mama Yama abt the TPS recall? Or, should I assume it's my responsibility (read: I was born w/ this knowledge) and talk to my dealer?

The campaign starts tomorrow (Oct11); perhaps Yamaha will mail out recall notices... who knows. You know about it now, so, might as well call your dealer and ask them if they are aware yet. Typically, dealers will be notified about it through Y.D.S.

Can't say I'm terribly happy with this, but at least they are conducting the recall.... both of my Yamaha's are affected. In fact, while it has never cut out on me, my R1 is displaying the *exact* symptoms described with regard to a wavering RPM during idle.... :glare:
