Since you liove in Vancouver right next to a lot of salt water, I'm kinda thinking that it was salt water (spray or fog) that may have caused the corrosion However, there are a lot of other aluminum pieces on the bike and if only the gas cap had corrosion then I'm probably just smoking some thing.

I also did this mod to my '05 and definitely think it is a good upgrade. And the cost was minimal for a slipper style clutch. Highly recommended.

I don't think there is a 'choke system' that can be 'kicked on' per sey. I believe there is a wax motor type of fuel enrichment system to increase the cold start idle.
