This one is a special case, just happens I had one, old model that did the same thing. I would bet that the gas cap is non-vented, either plugged or was replaced with a non-vented unit. The cold weather actually is creating a vacuum in the gas tank, that the fuel pump can't handle. Try loosening the gas cap when it is parked and see what happens, it might be that simple.

In hot weather and low volume in the tank, pressure can build up in the tank, my car was black. The high pressure pushed gas through the carbs and filled the crank case with gasoline.

Seen this before on drive by wire throttle bodies..Vehicle should be covered under either the 3/36 bumper to bumper or 5/50 emission warranty. The mass air flow sensor must see a minimum cfm of air before allowing the vehicle to start, should be a easy fix. But only Ford or large fleets will have a IDS to re-flash the car.

The worst-case scenario would be one of the 20+ modules (computers) refuses to wake up when the key is turned on. That still would require an IDS and lot of time to locate which module in the communication area network is at fault.

Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0506 and/or P0505. These conditions may appear after battery disconnect, dead battery condition, or keep alive memory (KAM) reset. The symptoms may be due to engine deposits in the throttle leading to air[low less than desired.

ACTION

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 53.9 and higher or 54.1 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2008.1 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website. The calibration contains a sludge compensation strategy for the throttle body.

Now THAT'S what I was talking about. :clapping: There are actually a couple of good ideas here. I didn't know the car would continue to turn over but not have enough charge to start. I wonder if his mechanics know this. I'm also wondering about the venting thing since his car is black also, but there may be a difference in FI models and older carburated models. I'm betting it's not something too difficult, unless the guys who installed the lights and radio accidently drilled into something they were not supposed to. I'm gonna forward this info to him.
