Just because the cruise is engaged, doesn't mean that you have to let go of the handlebars. What it does is take the constant pressure of the spring on the throttle hand. It allows you time to relax the grip.
Auburn: I realize that. I was commenting on Bergmen's dashboard pic. If you look at the reflection you'll see it wasn't taken with a helmet cam...
It wasn't. I had the camera in my left upper jacket pocket. Also, I can walk and chew gum at the same time.

As for the hazards you mention, they are dangerous at any speed. Do me a favor, cross Nevada at 55mph and let me know how hard it is to keep from falling alseep. I've crossed it several times flawlessly and as you can see in the picture, visibility is excellent for miles, nothing is going to sneak up on you.

Also, I don't need to be lectured on what speeds I choose to ride, I've been doing this for 50+ years and know exactly what I am doing.

Not lecturing, Dan (I gave up trying to convince speedsters of the errors of their ways years ago; it's a fruitless endeavour). On a public forum like this you never know what person without 50+ years of riding experience is going to read a post like yours and think "all the good motorcyclists ride at xx mph so I should too." I was just suggesting some other factors to think about for those people and for those, like you, who are convinced that "faster is safer." I humbly suggest that you can tell yourself that as many times as you want and it still won't be true. I also suggest that you know in your gut that it's not true, but it's a convenient rationalization. I've read about the fatalities of dozens of people who "knew exactly what they were doing" but still weren't able to outsmart newtonian physics.

If you know what you're doing and are comfortable with the risks, let 'er rip - just as long as you're not endangering other lives in the process (which is admittedly a difficult thing to know for sure).

Chances are we'll never cross paths on the road but if we do I hope it's at a nice scenic viewpoint somewhere and we can admire each others' bikes rather than critiquing each others' styles or speed of getting there.

G.

It's going off topic here (somewhat), but, a few thoughts.

One, if you don't want to be a "speedster" why buy a 145 horsepower motorcycle?

Two, I pay pretty close attention to motorcycle fatalities (and we inevitably have a lot around here in the summers). They are almost always a result of inexperience, being drunk, having no helmet, or a combination of all of the above. Most are HD's, a few crotch rockets go out in a blaze of glory. The typical FJR riders I've been with and know may really haul the mail at times, but generally are very competent in the operation of their bikes, have their bikes maintained, and wear the right gear.

I'm fine with minimizing risk, but for me, there's a time and a place where speed really isn't a great concern. If that wasn't the case, I wouldn't keep this bike.

What's REALLY funny is that the speedo shows 90mph at 5200 rpm, yet the gear indicator shows "N".

Shenanigans???

Gear indicator- you mean the big, not-lit-up, N for Neutral, light?

If he was in neutral, the light would be green.

Sucks being red/green colorblind.

+1, Gunny; Same here RH, luckily I am not also ugly like you! jes' sayin' and nuff said!

Knock it off you morons!

Can't you see this is a very serious issue here? I mean it's a real pain in the ass having to deal with such a major flaw.

I'd probably have to call the suicide hotline if I was subjected to such trauma.

What the **** did I do? I don't whine about the '13s. I was smart enough to not buy one. 13 CC issues are not my problem.

Besides...I thought you were president of the Dicknutz Gallery and I was banned for being too cool. You bunch of Nancy's gotta make up your minds.

You Blokes have it good , if we did the speeds you lot are talking about our bikes/cars would be impounded our licence taken off us and we would make the six o'clock news .

I did a lap of Australia in 2004 when the Northern Territory had a open limit , it was a blast , its now 130kph (80mph) every other State and Territory is max 110kph (68mph) with a lot 100kph .

I live in Victoria , Aussies worst Nanny State ..

I really am enjoying my 2013, but the cruise issue is a blocker for me getting the FJR where I want/need it to be in the farkling department. I've held out long enough for Yamaha to make a fix available (even one that I'd gladly pay for), but it looks like it's an exercise in futility.

In the meantime, the Candy Red 14 is growing on me and I've decided to fix the issue by buying one. When all is said and done it may be the most expensive CC I've ever purchased and some will think I'm an idiot, but I will be happy. And that's what matters most. Cuz when I'm not happy, all y'all suck.

Just did a 500 mile ride this weekend and and I can't tell you how much time I had to ride holding the throttle for no other reason than the crappy 82 mph limit. Yamaha is foolish not to think this 'small' easily fixed issue isn't causing dissatisfaction.

I've always been a throttle-holder. I've used throttle locks to help on longer rides, but now that I'm getting older I like the idea of cruise. I admit that I didn't find out about the CC limit on the 13's until after I committed to purchasing one. I never really considered asking the question. My issue. Not sure it would have changed my mind, but perhaps.

I sold me 05 FJR because I wasn't able to get comfortable on it and a neighbor with more money than brains made me an offer I couldn't refuse. This FJR has been an ergonomic experiment. Now that I know I can get comfortable on the FJR, I'm committed to the platform for my sport-touring needs. I'm a little disappointed that Yamaha hasn't made a fix available and I'm tired of waiting. So I'm going to fix it and be happy.
