First impression: WOW this looks even much better than the pictures I had seen.

Ergonomics: Well I'm six foot and easily 250 pounds but this bike fits me great. After adjusting the rear suspension and mirrors everything else just fits.

Ride & Handling: I am an old, conservative and careful rider so this bike exceeds my demands. I find it very confortable and forgiving even on the twist rough roads around home.

Quality: I'm impressed with the fit and finish. This bike attracts gawkers like nothing else I've ever owned and the comments most often heard are how well this bike is put together.

Pros & Cons: I find this bike the "funnest" bike I've ever owned and I've had dozens since my first in 1969. As for Cons: Waiting since November 2013 (the dealer could not release the bike until after March 21st. 2014). The price is high but so is the rarity and quality of this machine. I expect factory and after market accessories to also be high in cost too.

Recommendation: There may not be much hope for unspoken for 2014 R nineT's left at dealerships but I would tell anyone who likes the idea of owning one don't delay but get their name on the list right away. My bike was shown to prospective buyers and helped sell the remaining two that my dealer will receive this year.

JSNS - thanks for the heads up on BMWDFW! I have a wedding to attend next weekend but will definitely be checking them out for future hookups.

The R-NINE-T - Wow - the bike just grabs you. The whole retro café racer deal is killer. Not all of the bells-whistles as the S1000R but really like shaft-final over chain. Sat on one and it seems a bit more comfortable than the S as well.

Getting one to demo though is going to be a problem, seems to be the hottest bike ATM. All three that have been through the dealership here were sold well in advance. And the next couple are accounted for as well. No telling when one would be available for purchase.

Resurrecting this thread to get opinions on the following bikes:
2014 S1000R

2014 R NINE T

Will be trading in the little dude (my training wheel CBR250R). Which should just cover my TTL, and a new Arai Full-Face

. Been looking at naked's for a while for local riding and weekends in NW Arkansas (on the back of my truck from Dallas - the FJR has spoiled me).

The S1000R seems like a LOT of bike for the money.
Not to me. The Yamaha FZ-09 seems to fill that same naked, hooligan bike billet for **** load less Deutschmarks.

MSRP of $7990 for the Yammie vs $13,150 for the Beamer. I'll do the math for you: How much riding can you get done with an extra $5,160 samoleans in your wallet? I know I'd sure have a hard time justifying the extra money for the BMW. YMMV.
Fred, don't you know that you aren't supposed to buy a new BMW? That is best left to the serious kool-aid drinkers like Don. You look around and pick up a 1 or 2 year old model from someone that just has to have the very latest bike in their garage. That way you get a low mileage bike that is still under warranty at competitive pricing.

Ha ha... that is exactly my MO, Scott. I've actually never bought a new bike in my life. Picked FJR up at 1 year old and 10k miles back in 2006, for less than $9k!

But I'd still want to wait to find an FZ-09 that is a year old (instead of one of the proposed fancy beemers), and put it under YES warranty. That should only cost around $6k. Hell you could get two of them for less than a year old S1000R.

To me the FZ-09 screams "hooligan bike". What hooligan needs a shaft drive, ABS or traction control? ;)

Michael Dunlop (naturally, an Irishman!) takes BMW to IOM TT win!

S1000RR wins the superbike class at Isle of Man TT. First BMW win in 75 years, since the pre-war supercharger airheads.

https://www.motorcycleclassics.com/classic-german-motorcycles/bmw-rs-255-kompressor-zmwz12sozbea.aspx for an article on the last BMW TT win in 1939.

It may have been more Michael Dunlop than the S1000RR that won the race, but it was clear that the Beemer had a lot more ponies and was much better handling than the other marques. The Suzuki's in particular would show some truly scary wobbles.
