<snip> My local dealer just got a '14 A model in, so I bopped over to look at it.
Where did you find the '14...inquiring minds need to know!

I got a call from Roseville Yamaha today telling me they just finished prepping my new ES. I gave them a deposit over the phone and it will be ready for me to pick up early this coming week.

Excellent! I can't wait to read how you like it.

Congratulations Art!

Please post some outdoor pictures of the pick up with your review if you can. I'm a new member to the forum with a 14 ES on order, it's great that they are starting to be delivered to dealers.

While at the Int'l Motorcycle Show in San Mateo, CA on Saturday, I met Jesse Koeller, Field Support Mgr, Western Region. Jesse is from Yamaha Motor's U.S.A. HQ Cypress, CA. I was told Yamaha has not finalized the allocation for ES bikes for North America. Apparently they are planning to fill European orders first before they finalize the allocation for the U.S. of A. He indicated California may not get a very large allocation. Why, he did not clarify. I suspect it is because CA is a large sport bike market and that may be their priority. If you are a resident of CA and plan to purchase a 2014 ES it may be advisable for you to make a deposit on one ASAP.

That is a self fulfilling prophesy if ever there was one:

"We don't think there is a big market for that kind of bike, so we won't be bringing many of them in."

How would they even know how well they will sell, considering they have never had an FJR available with electronically adjustable suspension?

Just gonna throw up an opinion on the big picture. It's all about the marketplace.......... from what I have gleaned from discussion on various forums, first of all, the sport touring market isn't all that big. The cruiser market is reportedly 40%. Honda sells approx. 7 million bikes and scooters worldwide per year, Yamaha almost as many. There have been spotty reports of sales figures for sport touring, and perhaps this had more truth when the economy was better, but a new model such as the 2003 FJR or ST1300 sold approx. 2500 bikes each in their first year (we were all waiting a while for something new back then). After a couple of model years sold much less, something like 250 per year in North America, and one can imagine an aging model will sell even less. The 2007-2008/2010 C14 missed the boat a bit IMHO, you see one here and there but not that many. How many 2013 FJR's are out there.... seems like only a handful and we don't know of any high serial numbers (all under 200?). The AS in Europe was delayed until last May, and is not widely available. Seems Yamaha is feeling out the market, and upped the ante a bit for 2014, but really, they'll only sell a relative handful. Honda closed down the Marysville OH motorcycle operation (ST's & Goldwings) a while ago, and seemingly isn't interested in the ST market any more (don't even have a 2013)........... Yamaha seems to be sticking to it with the FJR, and to their credit it is a solid platform for the improvements they've made (and reasonably priced), but I personally doubt we'll see a new replacement sport tourer any time soon.

Pfft. Reason and logic have no place on the neenerNet.
Yet BMW markets, very successfully, several models that are similar enough to an FJR that people think we are riding BMWs until they see the tuning fork logo. Go figure.

My 2013 FJR has 001133 as the final string of digits in the VIN. I guess that makes it #1133? Or is it just #133?

Thanks,

Ray

You have #1133 which seems to be pretty close to the serial numbers of the '13s being sold in my area (highest I see for sale right now is #1171). To add to the confusion about the total units, the California models may have a separate number series since there was a duplicate number reported on the very early sales.

Same thing for Canada #179 here. Purchased in July.

I can guarantee Yamaha sells a whole bunch more FJRs per year than 250! It wouldn't be worth the bother for that many.

More like 2000 - 4000 per year. Which is still small potatoes compared to other models and categories.

Skooter, I'll admit up front I could be wrong......I did say it was an opinion...... perhaps you're closer to sales data and can dig some up for the FJR? Meanwhile, if anybody goes to a bike show, ask....... but I'll still say small numbers.

I was definitely misinformed and wrong about the 7 million number I used..... check this out (which I should have done before).

That is really some interesting stats. Things are looking pretty grim for the industry as a whole.

The chart from 1992 - 2012 really shows just how volatile the motorcycle industry can be in this piss poor economic times.

Thanks for sending out the links!

That ES shock, with all those electrical adjusting wiring.....Not normally the skeptic, but that's a lot to go wrong, or tinker with. Beautiful bike. I think I like it without the ES.

Looking at the video on the Yamaha site...well....I see more burnt orange in the sunlight than red. I would say that indoors, it probably does appear more red.
Is this the only color offered for the 14 ES? I guess I am also in the minority, but I don't like the color in the sunshine. I would rather have more red in the paint than the orange metallic I saw in the video.

Best case....I would rather have black...like my 08. Everyone knows that black is the only legitimate color for a motorcycle.

Note: I tried to look away from that nice belly on that moto-babe with Greg, but I couldn't. Daaaummm.

I was there in Orlando with Greg. I saw the bike up close. The color variation you speak of is indeed a fact. It appears more red in dimmer or diffused lighting. Reason being: the gold metalflake in the paint. The brighter the light, the more your eye picks up the metalflake, which turns the red toward a red-orange. The color shift, as with all metalflakes, is subtle but noticeable. I think it looks great, but then, color isn't that big of a deal for me. Question for you all deciding whether or not to buy based on color: how much do ya really notice the color when yer ridin' it? Stupid comparison, but when I receive a letter, it doesn't really matter what color paper it's written on. The color is insignificant as it's value is in its content. Hmmm...

Gary

I am continually astounded by the number of "men" who will make a motorcycle buying decisions based on the color of the bike.

Red is just a color. Do I like it on the '14? Sure, but mostly because it is different from the other years. If they made it green or yellow or pretty much anything but blue silver and black (which have been overused) it would have been fine.

I thought it was all about what you and your bike looked like to others?!?

Though when I'm not on the FJR, I must admit that I do tend to stare at it and admire it.
