After the dealer changed out my tires, drove 3 hours back home then discovered a bolt missing. The bolt was to hold the front ABS sensor and the mechanic said he neglected to tighten that one because it was new on the bike and he wasn't used to tightening it. Honest mistake and he did have all other bolts torqued. Service manager assured me that I would get a discount on the next service which will be my 12,000 mile service. He first quoted me around $480 for this service before the debunkle. Anyway, planning on taking the trip for the service this Saturday.

Knowing this service is pretty entailed, is that price steep/about right and what would be a fair discount?

A bill that said "no charge" would work for me.

Isn't that about the same as getting a free meal from the place that gave you food poisoning last week?

I don't do as much of my own service as possible just because I like wrenchin'.

If it's a multi-tech operation, I'd be inclined to request a different tech for the next service...

Or he may make sure he gets everything right this time.

I took my bike in for a TBS, TPS recall, swap to Engine Ice, and new plugs at 13,000 mile, last week. The tech left the rear gas tank bolt loose, and it almost fell out when I took my seat off. All I got was an "Ooops, we'll fix it." But then again he only charged me $150, including parts, which should have been $80 just by itself. I'm happy.

I know there is a time factor Dan, but that $480 buys a lot of specialized tools. (carbtune, tourque wrench etc.) You know everything is right and its fun to get intimate with the bike.

I'm not paying the $480. Got the tools, manual and will, just not much time. The list of stuff to do is pretty extensive and whatever the labor time that's allowed for this would probably take me 3x's as long. I've handled oil changes, tbs (w/ friends help) & r&r spark plugs - just don't know if I can do all the other stuff required. Bet that price included the oil/filter change which I've already done. If they gave me a decent enough break, it might be worth the trip.

I agree that they were admirable for admitting to it. Talking to the mech. dude, he was sincerely apologetic and guaranteed me this wouldn't happen again. I bet he'd do a good job based on his honesty. This dealer really has shown great customer service to this point and everyone there has been cool.

Still curious from others as to what the going rate for this 12,000 mile service is and opinions on the discount. I do like "freebies". Just don't think that would happen. I'm calling tomorrow and talking to the SM.

Thanks, everyone, for the input.

Dude, I think I paid too much for my last service, but then again I had alot of work done; my schedule is tight. It's a choice..

I am too lazy to look it up............

What is so 'entailed' about the 12,000 mile service?

Besides an oil/filter change, what do they do?

$480 sound REALLY steep to me. I don't even pay that much for a 26,000 mile valve check where they also change the plugs and put new coolant in. That is the ONLY thing I have done by the dealer.

Me too! (and a hectic schedule) So I finally broke out the manual.

Looks to me like it's the same as other service but the 16,000 mile has swingarm bearings and steering beerings re-packed, the ********, final gear oil changed, new plugs, rear suspension link pivots lubed. Some of these have pics/how-to details already discussed.

Then, why so much? I'll definatley pass on this one. Saved me $$$'s and time... so, guess you guys want a consultation fee.

Consultation fee............ummm............uhhhhhh...........yeah, that's the ticket! ;)

What I would like to know, and what I would definitely ask your dealer, is what exactly was he going to do for $480? Sounds like it is quite possible he was going to rip you off with unnecessary, overpriced work. NOT the kind of dealer I would be taking my FJR to.

In regards to the items you list in the 16,000 mile service...........

Changing the final drive oil is easier than changing the oil and filter. A coolant swap is really not that hard, though takes some time, and take the following for what it's worth as others like radman will completely disagree............

I would NOT have the steering and swingarm bearings repacked and suspension links lubed. Those items are completely not necessary with that kind of mileage, unless that is you detect a problem. And I learned this from my local Yammie wrench who has been doing it for 30+ years. When it comes to stuff like that he is of the opinion that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And that after taking those things apart, one can actually make things worse upon re-assembly by not adjusting stuff correctly.

I haven't done any of those things on my 95k mile FJR (though they are probably getting due at this point) and have suffered no ill effects.

Regardless, I would VERY leery of that dealer and his $480 service.

Free labor? I dunno.

When I bought the Concours, they let me leave with a rear drive unit bone dry. Then they told me it was my fault when, ~600 miles later, it started whining and clicking. Then they wanted to do me a huge favor ( ) and only charge me for the parts to fix it.

It is basically the same thing as the 8000 mile service and is the same as the 4000. I am with Skooter on this, all that extra stuff doesn't really need to be done that soon or often.

Do the 12000 yourself and it will only cost you the fluids and time.

Did they/would they do all that is required and charge you $480?? I'm skeptical with dealers and the "required" maintenance they actually carry out.

IMHO
