Perrie, !! :clapping: Port HardyPrince Rupert by Ferry and then the Cassiar Alaska Highway to Haines ..... :clapping:
Yes good plan :yahoo: nice riding on Vancouver Island. then nice riding Dawson Creek to whereever north. Have never done PR to PG to DC but I hear its also great riding. You may never come home! If you get into some of the more aventureous areas north of PG you may well need those dirt tires!

Guess I'll give this a bump. Not sure why it lasted a week and then petered out, but probably because it was so far in advance of the rally nobody really had firm plans. Not that I do, of course, but I'm definitely going to connect CFR with more extensive before and after rides. I've been thinking about an Alaska ride, and considering the possibility of making it from Nakusp (it's sure a lot closer to Alaska than Sacramento is).

Anyway, whether it's all the way to Alaska or just up into the Rockies (Banff/Jasper/wherever), I'm proposing anybody interested get together at CFR and talk about riding together including comparing plans, riding styles, schedules, etc. We could get some PMs circulating in advance to find out who's thinking about this.

This is probably a good time to toss this out, as Dave has hinted at it:

A special run up to Hyder, AK is a real possibility after CFR.

Those of you who followed TWN's trailblazing adventure, and I am not talking about our run to Hyder last summer but, rather, his ride into the great unknown, probably think that his ashes were all placed under that tree at Don Carver's wonderful Honderosa spread. In reality, Patti would like some of the ashes spread near Hyder. At the time of the memorial gathering, I contacted a local (Hyder) minister who agreed to help out and I was going to ship him a small parcel for sprinkling off the Bear Walk. Later I thought, wait a minute, taking Tim back there would be even better. Next thing you know, the Cannuks plan CFR 2009 in British Columbia. Now, it takes a bit longer for stuff to bubble up through the tar than it did ten, fifteen years ago but this one seemed pretty obvious pretty quickly.

Hyder is only "semi-Alaska" and those who want to do the Dempster or another route to the heart of the state won't find the run very appealing. But for those who might want to do a four-five day run up and back with all the joy and tears that are inevitably going to be part of the package are welcome to help make this run what it should be.

Besides, I know a great place to eat in Victoria, Vancouver Island BC on the way down....and to make things even more interesting/complicated:

I introudced my friend Mark to our friend Tim a few years back and the three of us did a few rides together. You may recall that Mark rode with Tim and I from Vancouver Island to the San Francisco Bay Area on the return leg last summer. Mark and Tim hit it off (Tim hit it off with almost everyone) and Mark told Tim about Mark's house is Los Barilles, BC - Not British Columbia but Baja California, about fifty miles up from Cabo on the gulf side. We talked many times about a Socal to Baja ride. But Mark lives in Seattle and owns a restaurant in Victoria that Tim just loved. So, Mark and I want to put together a BC to BC TWN North American Three Country Quasi-Memorial Mariscos y Cerveza Run. The months of May or, dare I say, June are both being talked about as the time to do this. Whether this would work after CFR and/or a Hyder run is really hard to tell but you never know and many us will already be near the proposed starting point. We figured that we could pick up riders along the way (Seattle, Bay Area, L.A., South Bay, San Diego, etc.)

All of this may just be a pipe dream but, with this crowd, I suspect both runs will be made at some point and maybe back to back. Of course I am told that by the end of June hurricanes become an issue.

Making it to Fairbanks on the Dalton wouldnt require any special tire, new tires would be ideal but I know there are folks who have made the entire Alaska highway trip n the FJR I know I plan on doing it next summer when I move outta Fairbanks. There are several groomed campgrounds with Tee Pees and cabins available for no more than 20 US dollars for the cabins along the way that cater to bikes. I will find the sites and post if any are interested not to mention if your willing to ride the distance stated in the first post u can probably stay at motels the entire way.

Well, HECK yeah. My plan for the whole trip is to camp most of the time, but Im not much interested in setting up a tent in the rain. Or for that matter, paying a heck of a lot for a motel room. So some way cheap cabins along the route would be great to know about. Is there a link that would cover this that you could post? Thanks!

One way to go is to get yourself a copy of the Milepost. Very good, and inexpensive (around $20 at Amazon), information for anyone traversing Alaska.

Milepost

Is it really that far to Alaska or is this a distortion resulting from the map projection?

Fridley%20MN%20to%20Skagway%20AK.jpg

Google Map

Fridley to Nakusp - 1,624 mi

Nakusp to Skagway - 1,588 mi

Damn! ..and then ride home! ...and that would put me at about half the miles involved in one IBR!

You could save a few miles, head over to Prince George, take 16 to the Cassair Hwy 37 then north to the Alcan. Then you'd go right past Hyder.

I'm meeting a friend in East Glacier then doing the Going to the Sun Road and up along the Icefields Pkwy then back down to Nakusp

Here's the route to Nakusp I've got planned clicky

Then you'd go right past Hyder.
Isn't it a 75 km dirt road to Hyder? That's like 47 miles to you and me.

Where is this East Glacier and Sun Road?

I do like your route to Nakusp. I was considering putting the wife on an Amtrak and following a route similar to yours. Now that CFR is booked solid, her fence sitting is gonna cost her. Just wait until I win the cutest roommate prize! Then she'll really be jealous!

East Glacier is on the East side of Glacier -_- National Park and The Going to the Sun Road in Glacier Nat. Park is one of the most scenic roads in North America.

It's all paved to Hyder unless there's some construction. Once you arrive in Hyder the road does turn to gravel but the town is only a few blocks long. You could continue on the gravel all the way to the Salmon glacier but even that's only several miles.

If you're intentions are to place Tim's remaining ashes in Hyder this year, then I'm interested. I have no plans to run further north than Hyder, and this run would be mission-focused. After, I would be on a pace back home not acceptable to most... but for this, would be worth the effort. MCML, I'll be in contact, offline, to discuss.

Here are some links:

This one might be of use on your way home it is SE of Nakusp https://www.toadrockcampground.com/directions.html

This is another one for the trip south https://www.ridersranch.ca/Things%20to%20do.htm

A few campgrounds listed here https://www.blm.gov/ak/st/en/prog/recreatio...ampgrounds.html

There are more but I am having trouble locating them in my history if you or anyone decide to come up let me know I will meet you somewhere in the state I want to go to CFO but due the fact that I am not getting a bailout and my job wont let me take extended time off I will be having till wait till next year.

It's probably about time that I got Hyder-ized. I've been screeched-in by the Newfies, so why not? (once you've kissed the cod, everything else is easy...)

I'll follow this thread with great interest.
