Am I wrong to be upset

Alright, here's my update as of yesterday.
I spoke with Yamaha and they are going to cover the entire thing. Diagnosis, and the repair.

As I understand it. They will replace the exhaust valves, guides, and seals. The woman I spoke to didn't have any information about parts availability. So I guess if there is some kind of back order I will find out soon enough.
Check here on the backorder issue.

This thread brings back memories of a personal experience with trying to get a warranty issue (that dealt with paint) properly addressed at a truck dealership. Fortunately a friend who owns a body shop told me how to word my questions. Beyond that, on any issue like this, if you aren't getting results, start writing letters and making phone calls. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." And since you're right, it should eventually payoff as it apparently has.

I took a quick look at the Lemon Law, but see in my own state of Pennsylvania that motorcycles are not covered. In other states the law applies to most vehicles under 12 months/12,000 miles, and usually, but not always, relates to what happens after 3 unsuccessful repair attempts. This sure seems like a lemon issue!

This brings up some new questions....

Does the dealership tick repair take care of the ticking issue forever, or does it often reappear?

If the repair takes care of the tick forever, what fix are the dealers applying that hasn't yet made it back to the assembly line? They must be using different parts(?)

There have been instances of recurrence, and there have been bikes that apparently stayed fixed. It's probably a giant headache for the company, having to pay for all those repairs, but I don't think they will be going bankrupt anytime soon.

Since the repair is dubiously successful, there's nothing concrete to make it back to the assembly line. None of the '06's have the problem yet, but since there aren't any, the jury is still out on the issue. One thing I do find comfort in is the fact that Yamaha is making good on standing behind their product, albeit hesitantly at best.

My ticking FJR experience:

Talked to dealer several times and let him hear it.

He too rides an FJR and frequents this site.

Scheduled a date for repair.

Dropped off bike

2 weeks later she was fixed. #1 and #2 exhaust valve guides were the worst.

Parts replaced: valves (all), Valve guides(all). New spec valve seals, head bolts, head gasket, other various gaskets and seal, coolant changed, spark plugs replaced oil changed and rear differential lube changed.

Cost to me= $0.00

That is what you call top notch service. I am really going to miss my dealer when I move. He isn't out to **** anyone like most of the other dealers. He makes an honest living and treats his customers fair. He told me he gets payed X amount for the labor and that the parts an paid for by yamaha and they will pay for pretty much whatever the dealer says he replaced.

I pretty much think the fluids are incidental. You have to drain the oil and the coolant so they should pay for them. Spark plugs and rear diff fluid was cost of my pain and suffering. LOL

Runs like a top now. Still has the surging she had when she was new but is making alot more power than she was.

Hey Tim,

Sorry to hear about your problem. I live on LI too and was considering an 06' FJR but I will not be going to North Shore to buy. Thanks for the info and good luck.

Rob
