I traveled extensively shooting competitive skeet and bench. I always carry. I have shot with the swat and sniper teams around the bay areaat local ranges. They always have told me to declare a firearm if stopped, always.

CCW law in Ohio states that you MUST declare if you have a weapon when a LEO stops you for any reason.

To have a weapon in possession is a tactical advantage. You immediatley lose the tacadv if you draw, unless you are drawing to fire.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I am armed and you don't want to find out.

Lots of interesting reading here. Also a lot of different opinions and ideas.

My personal concealed setup is a recessed hammered Taurus .44 Special revolver. No saftey to fumble with, nothing to cock, just aim and pull the trigger. This has to be one of the most idiot-proof and safe handguns around. This is ofcourse no excuse to be an idiot, nor is it an excuse not to practice. Between this gun and my others I estimate I shoot around 3000 rounds of centerfire and rimfire ammo a year.

Currently I am not LEGALLY concealed carrying. In my former state I held a CC permit. The state I currently live in would not transfer that permit but they would honor that permit untill it ran out.....which it has. When I started asking around I found out that the states neighboring Utah would most likely not honor a UT permit so I would be illegal if I traveled to those states anyway.

I have no reason to ever give a cop reason to search me or my vehicles. What they don't know won't hurt 'em. I'm a good citizen and plan to stay that way.

I'm more interested in my own (and my wife's) safety than in each idividual states politics.

Sometimes they do not need a reason to do a search.

If there is any doubt about anything, they will ask to do a search and if you say no, well then that is another reason for them to do the search.

Probable cause. That is the key there.

I have seen them do a search if there is any kind of doubt. We gets lots of tourists from the Houston area here on the coast in the warmer months (which has already kicked in around here) and see many of the cars being searched while on the way to the beach, on the beach and even leaving the beach for home. They do do it and will do it.

You do not have to give them a reason.

with that said-do NOT give them permission.

If they ask if they can search your _____ tell them you are not giving them permission to search; then if they can't prove probable cause in court the case gets tossed. If you give them permission to search anything they find is admissable in court. I don't give permission for a search whether I have anything to hide or not (and I never even look like I'm going to try to stop them if they decide to do it anyway). Well reasoned post. Too many people don't think it through to that degree. They certainly should. I like my Makarov. reliable and hot little round , plus not out that much if a cop confiscates it, as is the custom. A few weeks ago a local resident was cleaning his gun on his back porch and an off duty cop saw him. He was charged with inciting to riot. He hired a lawyer who got him off the hook but he's still trying to get his gun back. Probably never will.

WHHHAAAATTTT! He had a firearm displayed while on his private property and he was charged? What frickin state do you live in? Sounds like a Nazi state, could it be Maryland? Anyways, I thank God I live in Arizona where people and the State accept firearms and the right of the citizens to have them.

There is a lot of chatter about "what if" scenarios... But, has anyone been in a situation where the use of a firearm was warranted? (Not including war combat)
Perhaps attack of wild animals at the camp site comes to mind?

No one, and I mean no one truly knows what they will do when in that situation until they experience that situation. Just pray you never have to experience it, but be prepared if it comes.

I know that they don't reciprocate Texas CCP, but the states between Texas and Nevada all do. Does that mean that if I was hypothetically carrying... I just need to keep the gun and ammo in seperate sidecases once I cross the border?

As I mentioned in an earlier post I want to shoot some guns in Reno...anyone got an Uzi? That said there is a lot of talk about folks riding to Canada this summer. Be aware that you can't bring a handgun into Canada.

A number of places to shoot fully-automatics and a variety of handguns in Vegas including The Gun Store. Not sure about the Nevada side of Reno.

I'm getting the same thing here at home. I'd suggest an alternative, but that site is THE DEFINITIVE site on the subject. One might be able to Google and find an alternate, but nobody lays out all the correct, detailed, and source linked information state-by-state as well.

Just out of curiousity, when was the last time you got pulled over and checked? Me, not since I was a teenager driving around shooting at road signs and then it wasn't a big deal. Obviously, that was a long time ago....
