In your flat-top design, were the 2 shoulder screws the only attachment points to the bike?
Yes

They weren't just holding the tank on either :D

The puddle under the bike is the last of the rain as I stopped to dry out a little on the way home from CFR.

What did you use to support the tank on the frame in the under seat area (I think I saw bumpers somewhere.)
Look at Post #132 again. Look closely at the photo showing where the fuel line attaches to the fitting on the tank. The bumpers and the mounting blocks can be seen in that photo.

I've still got that tank. You should have come to CFO last year. You could have stopped at my house and snagged it!

How do you like them baffles??

All the plates are now cut except the top plate. I thought I might have a shot at having the bends done today, but it wasn't to be.

I'm thinking about letting someone else do the bends. I took all of the plates and several pages of drawings to the guys who have helped me out in the past. They couldn't do it today and also estimated they would charge me for three hours at $65/hr. On the bright side, they made some suggestions that were really helpful.

I have a chicken and egg question for everyone following this thread.

Here's the problem. I can't really assess the viability of a possible GB until after these have been built and tested. But, I have a decision to make and before I can make that decision, I need to know if there is any interest in these.

Here's the situation. I can either pay some to bend these or I can make the parts I need to bend them myself. The parts I need to make are radius attachments that will fit over the fingers on a combination bending brake. <Link> (Follow the link and check out the bottom of page 29)

If the two tanks I'm working on now are the only ones I'm going to make, I'll just have them bent and move on. But if there is a possibility that I'll be making more of them, it would be cheaper to bend them myself.

I'm not asking for commitment.

I will not contact you trying to sell you anything.

I just need to know if anyone else is interested in one of these. You could even add a conditions to your response like; "I'd want one if it was free" or "I'd want one if it was pink", or "I'd want one if it came with universal health care" :D

Your responses are appreciated.

Fantastic 1,500th post Joe! Dang, you have some made skilz. The tank going to Kali for testing, is it a pumper or gravity feed?
That's a good question. I'm pretty sure it would work as either, but it definitely won't transfer fuel any faster than a Tanji cell.

Do you want to test that? I could set it up as a gravity feed; draining from the bottom with a valve on the left side. The bulkhead in the main tank will have to be a regular one. The razzle dazzle bulkhead fitting through the fuel pump flange isn't intended for gravity feed.

edit: shameless self promoting link added
I can test both ways if needed. I think I prefer the simplicity of gravity feed over a pump set up. Does the Tanji drain real slow, is that the negative to gravity fed tanks? I guess it's about time to start thinking about bulkhead fittings and what not?

I think you will be getting orders. And this time, not from the boss-lady! My guess is that when you're tanks are seen on the road, and available, you'll have more biz than you know what to do with. Besides, you may need those tools for the next job!

I would like to buy one but it does depend on the price (as always). Instead of "I'd want one if it came with universal health care" I'd say that I'll buy one if you can guarantee we don't get universal health care.

I mean no disrespect whatsoever to your cell design, and am fascinated by what you're doing, but I still have times when I wake up screaming in the dark over a previous clusterf*cked fuel cell group buy from this forum a few years ago. Once bitten, twice shy... my wallet still bears the scars too...

I mean no disrespect whatsoever to your cell design, ..., but ...
I sympathize with you and what you went through, but what does that have to do with me and what I'm working on?

Am I asking for your money?

Am I asking for you to commit to buying something from me?

All I wanted was help making a decision about how to best spend my money in the next few days.

When my daughter was seventeen and eighteen, she used to have this very annoying (and very endearing) habit.

She would start out by saying, "No offense, but..." and she would follow that with some very offensive remarks.

It's not as endearing when it comes from you Groo.

I'm pretty sure the bottom plate of my tank is at the same height as the bottom plate of Tanji's tank. I was going to check the photos (Tom Melchild's) of the Tanji tank adapted to fit a GenII, but they are gone. "The page you tried to load is no longer available at that URL."
Remember this photo?

The red line is at the bottom of my auxiliary tank. Where would the Tanji tank be? The same right?

This next question is for you gravity feed zealots. How high above the red line would you like your tank to be?

I'm not flying off on another tangent. I'm still working to finish this tank so I can send if off to California for testing ;) I'm still making one for myself. I still prefer pumping. But,... after this version is finished (and after I fix a top triple clamp for BigR) I've got two other versions to finish. The upside down plastic JAZ 4 gallon cell is about half done. The rear seat replacing rack is about half done. And I'm thinking about finishing a project Kaitsdad was helping me with, the gravity feed cell that attaches to the rear seat replacing rack.

So how high above the red line? (And WC, don't say 2-1/2")
I do not believe that you would need to be any above the red line. I think that as long as the exit which should also be the low point of the cell, is above the bottom of the factory tank and the fuel lines are properly sized the fuel will flow to the lowest point, The Tank.

Here is another pick of mine

I totally apologize that my post upset you. Truly.

You asked if anyone else was interested in one of these. My post was meant to convey that I would not be interested in buying one, even though I think you have a wonderful design. I didn't want to simply post "I wouldn't buy it" without a reason, and the reason being that it has nothing to do with your design but my own past experience.

Hope that clarifies my post, and again, my sincere apologies if you took it in a way that it wasn't intended.

I was just about to cut the top plate like this:

But now I'm wondering if this wouldn't be better:

Don, I see you're not signed in right now ... I guess I'll have to flip a coin :dntknw:

Thought you were putting a filler neck on it???Go with the latter.
I have two JAZ flush mount caps to use up.

I would go with the latter, but I'm not positive the plate will stay flat with a hole in the corner. Since I'm cutting the hole before welding, and since the gasket will work better if it's up against a flat surface, I'm leaning toward putting it in the middle.

You know what? Now that I think about it, one of those flush mount caps is for my plastic tank. I could put a filler neck on one of these and a flush mount cap on the other.

Hhhmmm.

Glad I asked! I have them clamped together in the mill right now.

I owe you a beer Jeff!

I found a shop near my house that does sheet metal fabrication. I sent 'em an email and asked if they ever take on small jobs. They're down to four day work weeks and seemed interested. That was three weeks ago. I've been driving around with all of the pieces, ready to bend, in the back of my truck the whole time. :(

While I try to work things out with the Revision5 tank, I thought I would spend a little time today working on the poly tank.

Here's another shot of the poly mounting plate (see Post #93 for more photos <Link>)

DSC05099.JPG

I could drill and tap some holes into the pieces I made as front supports. <Link> I need to make a piece to support the back half, but that'll have to wait for now. Then, the poly tank will be held to the rack with flat webbing. Easy. Cheap. What's not to love?

Oh, I almost forgot... This isn't just reposting stuff I did in the past. I got something done today:

One assumes you were working in the garage today....

.... rather than watching the football game. :dntknw:
I got home from the shop just before Half Time. I went into the garage to snap a few photos and spent the next few hours swearing at the television. The fact that I was going to make money if the Saints won was no consolation. The Saints win confirms the existence of a military-industrial-entertainment complex.

The whole thing makes me crazy. I need a break now.

This is what the bottom of the poly tank looks like:

DSC05117.JPG

See the small hole? I could either put a fitting in that hole where the fuel could drain, or I could plug it and put a pick-up in the tank. Like this:

an-8-low-profile-pickup~7548644.jpg

Also, I've made a little progress dimensioning the drawing of the Rev5 tank. If I have the right K-factor, they should be able to set up the press brake and bend the sheets. That will save me a little money because the operators won't need to calculate where to make the bends. A lot is riding on my getting this right, and sheet metal is not my area of expertise. Keep your fingers crossed.
