In summary... it's the people that are spending their time replying to "best oil" threads, rather than taking the time to change their oil as scheduled, that have something to be concerned about.
Hmmmm.... new term, "Typosyntheticlubritosis" - the failure of all premium grade lubricants induced by ignoring scheduled oil changes in order to spend more time on NEPRT responses.

Most definitely!

I suffer not from Typosyntheticlubritosis, because I buy synthetic and never look back. Motocross taught me the value of consistently good lubrication many years ago, or was that the last girlfriend? Hmmmm?

However, Farkelitus (Farklitus, Fartitus...) is rampant throughout my body. It has spread to every nook and cranny of my garage, invaded every drawer of my toolbox and continues to play havoc with my credit card balances. Tell me doctor, is there NO cure for this dreaded affliction!?

The doc's only suggestion, "Spray yourself down with WD-40". I asked if a Mobil-1 bath would be better and got no response.

To me, it is pretty clear that dyno oil will be sheared to bits within 1000 miles if it is running in a gearbox like most motorcycles. This has also been proven on various reputable websites over the years. Unless you want to change your oil every 1000 miles, do not use dyno. It is crap. Dyno does not like gearboxes.
So why don't the factory engineers realize this and spec synthetic oil for all bikes that share their motor oil with gear boxes?

Simple economics. Any/all motorcycle manufacturers make deals with lubricant manufacturers/distributors to use and endorse a particular brand of lubricant in new bikes. If the lube people could/would offer synthetics to the bike people at a lower cost than dino, then you would see Yamaha recommend, use and endorse synthetic lube in their bikes.

We see this in small (less than 125cc) racing bikes constantly. This year manufacturer-A specs lube-A. Next year the same damn bike specs lube-B. Most will tell you if you call and ask, that it is purely economics. Whomever offers the best deal on a lube that meets the minimum spec is what the manufacturer chooses.

+1 and it's not like it causes immediate catastrophic damage though on small race bikes it can. Factory recommended change interval is after every ride on those. But it is economics and statistics. A little more wear over time gets you out of warranty before you're buying expensive parts and making repairs.

Okay...so far, having read through this entire freaking thread with varying degrees of laughter, I took one thing away from it and that is a link to a study done at Purdue on canola based multigrade motor oil.

Veddy interesting. Seems to out perform dino/syn oils AND...best of all... it biodegrades, which means I can pour it directly on the neighbor's lawn, I guess.

Seriously, this may be a seminal article.

 
Nothing new about vegetable based oils. Maybe canola's grown in the area and Purdue's school of agritulture got a grant? All ester synthetics are vegetable based (Red Line for instance) though I don't know if it's canola. They're the only thing that will stand up to the extreme high temps in jet engines. So if you retrofit your FJR with a jet engine you might want to take a look at Mobil Jet II or something similar. Like canola oil. :lol:

Spare me the claims of the synthetic marketiers..... If anyone has any data showing that synthetic lubricants "run cooler" I would love to see it.
I have personally done a fair amount of engine and vehicle cooling testing over the past few decades and have seen numerous comparisons of conventional vs. synthetic lubricants in rear axles (hypoid gears), transmissions (manaul and automatics) and engine oil. They run the same temperature within test repeatability. Period.

Synthetics are often spec'd in situations where the particular application might exceed the normal operating temperature of conventional lubricants. This leads to the belief that the synthetic was spec'd so that the unit would run cooler. Not the case. It is purely a preventative measure of the operating temperature with either lubricant to spec one that would withstand the temperature.

Tests run by synthetic marketiers that "prove" otherwise are very very suspect a done in that fashion to tempt you to buy their product. Like the Amsoil "4 ball wear test". Some of the better cutting fluids on the market (like TapEze and such) will also do very well on the "4 ball wear test." Think they would make good engine oil?
I started to run synthetics in my bikes and my customer bikes in 1972. Some of my customers at that time road 750 hondas with the oil bag under the right side cover. There was a popular accessory at that time a replacement oil cap with a probe and thermometer in it. We tested AMSOIL 10-40 oil against castrol 10-40. There was a 50 degree difference between them. The AMSOIL ran cooler on that air cooled 750. One of the benifits is a dramatically smother shifting. Try it you will like it!
 
I found just the opposite on shifting. I was using the Rotella synthetic and switched to the Delvac dino and the only difference I noticed was smoother shifting! I love these threads :D no matter what anyone says, someone else has had the exact opposite experience. Guess that's what makes a horse race!

 
Current synthetic oils are just not the miracle products compared to conventional oil that people "remember" from the past.

Yep, dose with a little lead napthenate and that test looks good (with anything) -- I think Al Amatuzio's still using it? Kind'a like a circus sideshow.... :lol:

So why don't the factory engineers realize this and spec synthetic oil for all bikes that share their motor oil with gear boxes?
Simple economics. Any/all motorcycle manufacturers make deals with lubricant manufacturers/distributors to use and endorse a particular brand of lubricant in new bikes. If the lube people could/would offer synthetics to the bike people at a lower cost than dino, then you would see Yamaha recommend, use and endorse synthetic lube in their bikes.

We see this in small (less than 125cc) racing bikes constantly. This year manufacturer-A specs lube-A. Next year the same damn bike specs lube-B. Most will tell you if you call and ask, that it is purely economics. Whomever offers the best deal on a lube that meets the minimum spec is what the manufacturer chooses.
Doesn't the 20/40 that yamaha sells have a partial synthetic load?
