Made the biggest difference on my 06 AE ever, I can actually control the throttle a lot easier and find myself no longer having a death grip on the throttle while gearing down going into a corner. I debated doing this for the longest time, about the only thing I accomplished by putting this change off as long as I did was I lost some real quality riding time. As with everyone else I only let the spring loose one wrap, I'd be afraid to see what would happen if you took more wraps off than one. Most likely you may not have any spring return left to bring the throttle back to it's idle position. Who ever came up with this idea deserves our thanks in a big way.

There's just a large contingent of limp-wristed Feejer Pilots who can't handle the manly twist of the stock throttle and unwind the middle of the 3 throttle return springs by 1 revolution, effectively decreasing the throttle resistance some ladies'-blouse-wearing Nancies can't seem to deal with.

If you are happy with your throttle return tension, pay no attention to the guys in taffeta jumpers and drive the damn thing.

If you ARE unhappy with the tension, plug "+unwind+throttle+spring" into the "Search" function and read to your heart's content. There's enough there to keep you busy for DAYS!

2007 FJR, Middle spring released one turn 8000 miles ago, makes it as it should have been from the start. One turn release make it perfect.

No I am not unhappy with the tension, actually never thought about it till this thread started. All my issues (very few) with the FJR come after I twist the throttle, and that certainly hasnt been a problem yet!

I did the spring mod on my 04 and the 06 and by itself it works great. However after adding the G2 on the 06 I noticed the throttle didn't snap shut if I let off the gas on the highway and it just felt too light. So being the princess that I am, I made a loop of safety wire and made a 1/3 turn spring extender. Now I have a G2 and a middle spring that is 1/3 of a turn unwound. Yes, it was a giant pain to rewind the spring and then hook it to this loop of wire. But the throttle is really nice now!

I'm sure that not everyone who has done the modification has reported. It really doesn't matter IF you want to do the mod. Part of the original question was "DID you have the guts to....?" Another question might have been, "Do you have the guts to SAY you did it?"

As with all modifications, they aren't for everone and one should only do what one either needs or wants. Caveat emptor!

Yes I did. 1 turn released on the center spring. No problems in 18k miles.

Toss my lazy carcass in there... 30k on my '05 since the spring unwind. Never a problem since, would probably do it again on any other FJR unless they ever put a decent throttle cam on there.

My lazy and possibly carpal carcass also insisted on the spring mod, and after adding grip puppies and a throttle rocker I can finally complete a ride without an aching wrist and my right hand asleep. The return is noticeably weaker 3500 rpm and below, so I select gearing that allows at least 4000 rpm for a turn where I might need to dial down slightly.

I'm not sure I follow the logic of those who insist that the mod is unnecessary or unmanly - if your hand hurts or falls asleep why wouldn't you do the mod? In fact, the more manly one's activity as a youth - benching for maxes, for instance - the more likely you'll need to take care of your hands later. The whole issue is a good reminder of the need to make things right for yourself and not be influenced by what a "real man" (or woman) "should" do. I'm just grateful that this forum has a lot of experts who are willing to share good tips.
