I thought Heidi did a great job this year (yes I an a suck up  but it's also true!) and Lewisburg is a great location. Lots of great roads left to try and an easy 750 mile (for me) trip down. What could be better?

Townsend TN was the location for two EOM meets. Same hotel in fact.

It could be in Lewisburg again.... a lot of the ground work is done.

(snip) So, how does this work......... do we select a location then find people to step up and put it together, or do we find the people to put it together and let them find the location? The sooner we select a location, the easier it will be to get the rooms we need.
Organize it and we will come.....

Typically someone steps up with a suggesteion of where and when and the rest of us give our opinions. The organizer gets to pick the place and dates and the rest of us decide whether or not to attend. If it looks like a good idea then some others generally step up to help out.

The way I've seen it done... First decide if you want to be a whipping person (host), find a motel/lodge in good riding country that'll accomodate a large group & plan all the other stuff that goes with it around the host hotel/lodge.

We already knew that we had good roads. Reasonably priced accomodations w/ gas & food nearby were at the top of our list when picking a hotel. Also, the fact that it had "out the door parking" was important.

We weren't thinking much about folks needing taxis. I do believe that this past year was a first.

If you remember correctly, at the very beginning there were quite a few people who where questioning the location. Jim & I planned it regardless of opinions.

If there are people willing to step up & take the reins, I don't think that there's gonna' be a lot of fussers. Well, maybe a couple. Challenge them to be the host the following year. That'll usually get 'em to shut ye' ol' pie hole. Either that or someone for the following year is already set up.

There is definitely more to hosting then having good roads to plan around, but it damned sure helps.

Edited: I forgot to add... traditionally, EOM has been held the 2nd or 3rd weekend in September. I suppose that's how it started. Personally, I like that time of year. Temps are reasonable. Not too hot & not too cold... well, maybe a little cold in the morning. After all, we are in the mountains. It usually warms up by 10:00am, or so. I am guessing that the original plan was set after Labor Day on purpose. Kids are back in school & the temps are more reasonable.

Planning something like this in the middle of summer, people will probably be less likely to attend. Whoever picks up responsibility & decides to change the date may want to take that into consideration.

Lewisburg was great this year.

I really enjoyed the roads from EOM 06 in Boone. I wouldnt mind going back there either.

Heidi, I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the location we were discussing over a beer that Sat night.

I had suggested somewhere in the southern Catskill region of NY state to give our more northern riders a break next year. The following year ('09) would be more southern again. Plenty of good roads in the Catskills, and it's accessible from many major highways. The problem is where do we find a place that will accommodate 150 or so bikes? I originally suggested Hancock NY, but after checking out the hotels there a few weeks back they don't have enough rooms in either place. Somewhere like Middletown or the surrounding area has larger hotels and more eating places. Just a thought.

And NO, I CANNOT organize this! :p I don't have the time nor expertise to figure out how to get 150 FJRs in one place. A surefire disaster if I get directly involved.

BTW, I REALLY liked Lewisburg too. Nice people, good riding, etc. Same place would be fine with me too. I just figured I'd "suggest" a different location for next year.

I vote for a Lewisburg Redux.

(1) *most of the legwork has already been done* Thanks Heidi and Co.

(2) Facilities were very nice, though the bar in Boone was more fun.

(3) $68 a night for a double is pretty cheap.

(4) Only a handful of us were able to ride more than 2 of the 5/6 good routes, so routing work is already done. *Again, thanks Heidi and Jim*

(5) The banquet food didn't suck.

But I'll go anywhere reasonable in distance as long as twisty roads are involved.

Hey Randy, reasoning for not mentioning our beer discussion... it's not my job to initiate next year's location. Besides, you made it loud & clear that you're not interested in hosting. I'd planned on giving you a little prodding at some point to see if we could get ya' to host... but was not going to do it publically.

FYI & off topic... I am sitting here looking at your packaged up freebee Frogg Togg jacket to be enroute to your doorstep soon, Heidi

What Renegade said! We have lots of unexplored routes to ride.

I wouldn't have a seconds hesitation for going back to Lewisburg. I was impressed with the Brier Inn and loved the roads!!

-GSE-

r.e. Canaan Valley Resort. Stayed there for ST.NET national in 06. Nice lodge, but the actual rooms were a bit pricey and sub-super8 quality. Brier Inn was much nicer. Also Canaan is not close to any restaurants to speak of. If I recall there were two gas stations outside the resort, and that was about it.

Good things about it--good atmosphere to stand around to BS. Great scenery/backdrop. Close to awesome riding. Big enough for the group. But the Brier Inn had basically what we needed without dissappointment.

I vote Lewisburg again if the concensus is to have it in WV for all above reasons. The smokies would be great too.

When it's our turn to host the National, me thinks the Smokies would be the most impressive and would give riders from out west a chance to experience the Blue Ridge Parkway and Cherohala Skyway. Dunno..just an opinion. So since that's not going to be in 08, why not have EOM 08 in WV or New England and NAFO-EOM 09 in the Smokies?

Randy, not a bad idea moving it north for a year to give the northeners a break. The Pocono mountains in PA have some very nice roads and a ton of empty resorts waiting for the ski crowds. Hmmmmmmm.....

I agree that Lewisburg was great and wouldn't mind going back sometime. One thing that was great was having food and gas right there!

I also like the idea of something further north for 08?

If you can call Ruby Tuesdays and Shoneys food.....
From an actual conversation with the waitress in Shoneys about the off yellow liquid in the chafing dish with the huge ladle.

AXEMAN

"Excuse me maam, but is this the syrup for the pancakes?"

WAITRESS

"Why no suh, thats the buttah"

I guess that would explain why, at 235 lbs, I look like I have bulimia compared to the rest of the clientel in here.

We definitely have to send out SPKLBUK and SPKLDOE to do some restaurant scouting nearby....

Otherwise I'm in for Lewisburg again also.
I am no fan of Shoneys, but Ruby Tuesday had a very good brown beer on tap. :drinks:

Yeah, Shoney's is just bad. No reason to eat there at all with a Bob Evans right down the road.

So just to summarize the breakfast options:

(walk to Shoney's)

- Risk serious illness or intestinal distress.

(2 minute ride to Bob Evans)

- Safer, cleaner, and identifiable food and condiments.

I would go with the latter :)

If you cover everything on your plate with the sausage gravy at Shoney’s it tastes surprisingly good! Once you get past the gag reflex it’s amazing what you discover! ;)
