I've been speaking with Gypsy regarding making the FJR Assistance directory as a POI that would be updated monthly. This would make 'help' available as close as your GPS, without having to remember to pack the directory.

That being said, their are a couple of privacy issues that need to be addressed:

1) Do you even WANT the directory available as a POI?

2) Do you want to be included on it?

3) Would you rather have your full address published, or, just a your contact phone number? (Location would be the Centroid for your town - main post office or city hall). Theirs still risks involved with the phone number as well, should somebodies GPS be stolen.

Theirs a limited amount of information that can be output to a POI file. Especially if the file is distributed as a GPX file. Slightly more if it's just a plain old CSV file.

What say you?

One of the problems with the current format: if you don't know the general geography of the place you happen to find yourself in, it's hard to know who to call. Back in July of '06, I was coming back to Southern California from the Northwest Territories, and found that I desperately needed a new set of tires as I was passing through Washington state on I-5. I had my printed assistance directory, but I didn't really know where each city was in Washington, so I didn't know who to call for advice on local dealers. I wound up entering the cities into my Zumo just to see where they were and how far away I was.

If the POI version of the directory included only the lat/long of the member's city center (as Bungie suggested), I don't think it would violate anyone's privacy too much, but it would make it much easier to find out which members are closest to your current location.

I don't think it's a good idea to include a full address - no one should show up at someone's house without calling first, and then the member you called could choose whether to give out his address.

I dont mind the city location. If you look at the member map it gives pretty accurate locations of members whereabouts so that shouldnt be going too far in my book..

1) 10-4! Assistance info as close as your gps would be great.

2) Yah, shoor, ubetcha.

3) Unlike the current list directly mailed to folks the POI file should only include city/town and contact info/phone number without the direct address.

Privacy??? I would be much more likely to lose the hard copy of the directory than my GPS, go for it include phone no. and city, won't be comfortable listing my address.

I like the idea too. Heck my phone number and address are in the phone book and every web search of phone listings.

Right now I keep a copy on my laptop that usually travels with me, on a flash drive and in Google Docs.

A) Yes

2) Do you want to be included on it?

B - Yes

C) Contact phone number only please. You can list my near-by town, Creston, but no closer please. The nennernet is full of opportunists and I'm already too much exposed.

town should be enough but i personally am willing to give all.

It might be more beneficial for other places, but if you're cruising through IA or NE, there are only a few people on the list and we're close to the major metropolis's's's. Plus we might know where you're at if you just mention the road :)

I don't mind getting a call from anyone in need; if I'm at home I'll get on the internet and A) attempt to center their location in relation to where I am or if they're closer to someone else on the list and B) find the closest help if it's not me

I guess I don't care, just not full address please. I'm not easily found on the neenerweb :)

Yes, name phone and city are already available in the phonebook, google, and hundreds of databases. As long as no address is attached, I see no harm and the advantages to members are AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

This is a great idea. It would seem like a good balance between convenience and privacy to just give the suggested name, contact number, and city center.

Essentially the information would be the same as the on the printed list. There is no address info on that just a city and phone number.

As I told Bungie...I am all for it if he is doing it! :)

I am glad people are open to this. As the keeper of the list I am the one who always forgets to print it and take it with me...duh!
