I purchased an '04 with 17K this Summer. Just noticed distinctly different sound while running in 4th. Best described as a rubbing sound(Wo-Wo-Wo-Wo) corresponding to transmission speed. When I upshift or downshift it disappears.

And if I pull in the clutch, it disappears. Anyone else experiencing similar effect? Bike has 22,000 fairly aggressive miles now. The bike shifts smooth and runs quite well.

Normal. Search the archives and you'll find many discussions.

I have an '03 with 17k on it and have the EXACT same sound in 4th gear. To me it sounds a bit like an electric golf cart floored to the board going downhill as the regulator kicks in.

I always wondered how best to describe the sound. "wo, wo, wo, wo" seems to be pretty good, but I think I'd go with "***, ***, ***, ***" or "wurp, wurp, wurp, wurp". :D

My 05 makes the same sound in 4th...has from the day I picked it up. Now have 14,000 miles and same noise but no better or worse. Sometimes it clues me in that I forgot to shift to 5th. I don't worry about it.
