Jim (Fontanaman) is right, item six covers the OP's question very well. Posters on this forum are everyday people from all walks of life, using every day (in my world) language. We don't need more political correctness.

6. Those who are easily offended should proceed with caution. Posts in this forum may or may not contain adult language/themes. No whiney-gash crying about them allowed. Deal with it.

Amen.

I found found the FJR forum is a great place for everything FJR and a little bit more.... :eek:mg2:
Item six in the forum guidelines makes it permisable to post a little bit more

I am still learning as for what passes for ok and not ok out here.
It's permissible to imply I have relations with livestock...Actual pictures will bring down the house on ya.
The term "prevailing community standards" comes to mind. (Cf.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prude)

It didn't take me long, when I first arrived on this board, to recognize that I might find a wealth of practical and experiential wisdom being shared by... "Bikers".

Like sailors of old, bikers occupy a special place in society, with prevailing community standards that make some citizens squeamish. If one hangs out by the warf, one is likely to encounter drunken sailors with foul mouths and unbottoned flys. The simplest remedy is to hail a cab. And if you drop your keys... Kick them for a couple blocks before picking them up.

Damn Lamanites....

I used to live on an island in the NW and loved it for almost thirty years. One of the things that made me move was the need for all the new folks to change it to suit them selves. Before I move somewhere or join something I check it out carefully to see if it fits. If not move on. This forum has been here for quite sometime and while not perfect it is the BEST source of information on our ride and some of the best folks around. Some are a bit more colorfull than others but the admins keep it to a dull roar and if it gets to carried away then Travis or Matt lowers the boom and thats the final word.

So if this place offends you then perhaps you need to find a kinder gentler place or put the big girl panties on and deal with it. Defacation occurs.

I understand that what one might consider vulgar is subjective, but without pointing out specific posts (unless you'd like me to) it seems that the vulgarity line is crossed on a regular basis. I'm sure we are all smart enough to know what I am referring to in this case.
Yes.....and I have found that the Forum's "IGNORE" feature is a great tool to get rid of the "tools" that make the posts you are referring to.

Are people actually offended that easily?

And you can actually leave the house and function in society?

You're welcome as long as you don't mind living in the mountains with lots of game and everybody hunts and fishes. We keep the goats in the barn for Bust and SPU so they can have their kind of fun.

Great feature. Thanks for giving me a heads up.

As a purveyor of deadly dull posts I will comment that a bland diet is dull and a bit of spice sure picks things up. A diet that is nothing but spice with no content is dull too. We have a bunch of regulars that stop by the Forum on a steady basis to catch the daily buzz and it’s no problem to burn through the 'all noise, no signal' posts. However when your FJR isn’t running or sounds like it is going to go Chernobyl any minute and you appeal to the Forum for help only to have it degenerate into sheep, manatees, Irish, wallabies and screw you, NO SCREW YOU X10 responses it can be discouraging.

Use the Ignore feature in your settings. Ever so rarely one of the Ignored does provide an on topic real reply that you may miss. A lot goes on behind the scenes, the admins don't do a lot of their work in public. I suspect that there has been some intervention that we don't see to keep things no worse than where they are today.

Thanks for your post, flagstaff.

I think sometimes it takes a new set of eyes to see something from a fresh perspective that others are too close to see. And it took courage to raise it. My only advice is to not get too bruised by some of the responses you will invariably get and do as best you can to roll with it and hang in there. This is a fun place to hang out, with two or three good people (the rest are a**holes--that's how I handle vulgar: with asterisks
punk.gif
).

First on the concept of "vulgar." I believe in vulgar, but I think for a lot of people these days, perhaps in the generations after the Baby Boomers (the latter I think are the majority of this forum), vulgar as a concept does not exist anymore; it's archaic. I think Howard Stern is vulgar, and that's why I don't listen to him. I think there are some words and subjects and images that one should not share in public, that are vulgar (as you say, flagstaff, I think we know the kinds of things being alluded to here). Of course what's vulgar to one person (say me) is tonic for millions (Stern's fans). For example, I know a guy who LOVES to tell over the dinner table in mixed company about how he was obsessed with jerking off when he was young
bad.gif
. To me that's vulgar, and I excuse myself and walk away.

Second on whether the forum is vulgar. What is vulgar at the dinner table (above example) is not vulgar, say, in the locker room (to use a cliche example). So if vulgarity is a function in part of location, then is the forum an acceptable place for vulgarity? Again, this is a matter of opinion. The way I see it, we are a community of mostly men, and men love to rib each other. Curiously, we love to do it with references to body parts (not always human) and what a keen mind can do with said body parts, both in words and pictures. It's how we bond, unless you're Bust, in which case you bond with the south end of a northbound *** (did I say that?! I meant donkey
hypocritesmiley.png
). So in that sense the forum is more locker room than mixed-company dinner table.

I certainly read expressions and see images that I would never use or post myself. But in my view, owing to its nature as a community of (mostly) men, a certain level of what we could probably all agree is vulgar is permissible. And moreover, I think it is a fairly narrow gray line of acceptable posting that does not get crossed--much, or at least not get crossed by much, very often.

But I applaud your post and encourage the admins to re-aquaint themselves with the applicable forum guidelines and respond accordingly. And if it's not your cup o' tea, then politely excuse yourself and walk away.

JB

Yeah, yeah, I know: There's no topic however obscure that I can't spin out 150 words on.... If you don't like it, you can @^! in my #&^@*!

Sounds like my kind of place! I love the mountains. My roots are waaay too deep to leave Florida but, I will pay you a visit sometime. Got a whole lot of friends in that neck of the woods! We'll attend Sunday Mass together.

Actually, I enjoy reading your deadly dull posts.....and hope they continue in the same form.
I am going to +1 this. Besides that, I may need your help again one day. Nothing wrong with being dull as long as it is useful and helpful.

I will agree that it took great courage to post this and it is a valid question. There are some who rarely if ever post anything even remotely useful or helpful but feel compelled to post something to contaminate almost every thread in the forum. There are those that post almost nothing but quality useful information. Then there are the other 98% of us who fall in the middle.

I am glad you raised this question.

The Forum works for me and I appreciate all the info and advice I have obtained over the years. I was the seventh member, so lots of good stuff.

To me and my values, somethings are over the top, so I just ignor them. My only reservation is recommending the Forum to my great grand kids that are interested in motorcycle riding.

I'm probably old fashioned, but that's me.

Bruce

Very nicely worded, as always, Hans. I like the analogy of a locker room. I've read a lot of things here that I have found to be childish, offensive or just plain rude. And often very, very funny. If I don't like it, I keep scrolling until I find something I do like. It appears that the moderators are quietly doing their thing because what Busta posts here is tame compared to what he posts on FB. Again, keep scrolling if you don't like it.

IMHO, the good outweighs the bad by a significant margin here, so I will keep checking in.

Perfectly stated.

I was never offended, but I did feel some posts were way beyond just being salty. I felt like addressing the language and the inane posts that now, thanks to a trip to the Ignore section and a few clicks, are a thing of the past.

When you read the forum rules and see words like "asshats" and "********"(no asterisks used) you might guess sumpin's up around here. If being here gets your panties in a bunch, stick with it. After a while you might find bunched panties aren't so bad.

I'm pretty new here and at first was a little surprised at the vulgarity. Hadn't really seen it to this extent on other forums. Then again, I don't have to read everything here. I can scroll on by or try a different topic. I can not read what's written by certain individuals. That being said, I have learned here that once you try goats, you'll never go back to sheep. Or is it the other way around? Oh well......
