Back home safe and unsound (in mind) here in NH today @ ~ 1500h 9/23. 2100 miles in a weekend makes me giddy. Many more than that quantity of smiles.
I had full intentions of slabbing the entire return trip, but after Art (Roadrunner) and I got to Chambersburg, PA by lunch time yesterday, which meant we had knocked off our entire 2nd day of the trip down in 4 hours, we decided to get away from the BSTs (Big Scary Trucks) and CPTSM's (cell phone talkin' soccer Moms) and retrace our route down on the back roads of PA. We made it to Wilkes Barre last night (which was my planned layover anyway) and then split up this AM for the ride to our respective abodes.
What a completely and utter... magnificent way to use our time on his earth! I was listening to James Taylor while riding this morning telling me "The secret to life is enjoying the passage of time." Yeah hunh!, Jimmy. You got that right. Kind of jived with Ari's theme on Saturday night, IMO. And so did all of you guys... What a great rally. Being my first, I have nothing to compare it to, bt I think it could become habit forming.
It was really great matching up some names and faces to their forum handles. Hopefully my Alzheimers will allow me to retain a fraction of it.
Discussions over the last few days with some other attendees say that there can be no EOM anywhere other than Lewisburg. Those country roads truly are "Almost heaven". I guess with a few more diesel spills we'd find out how close to heaven they are...
But seriously I have never ridden roads like that before. And it's not just one road , it's anywhere you turn. Where else are we going to find that kind of stuff? The hotel was awesome (and cheap).
The only problem I have found with riding in West Virginia is that when you get back you find out that they flattened and straightened out all your favorite roads back home, and the speed limits have been lowered unreasonably while you were away.
My last point (and I'm truly sorry to be so verbose, but that's just the way I am). I was extremely moved, exhilarated, and proud to be part of the kind of "FJR family" that takes care of their own (albeit as a bit of a prank) like was pulled off for Jordan Haerter's memorial fund (Axeman's son). Anyone that was there was enriched by the experience. Stay tuned for more ideas on how to keep this rolling...
EOM 2008 - Been there.... done that... (didn't get the tee shirt because I was a mamby pamby procrastinator and was waffling on my attendance). I'll get the tee shirt next year... :yahoo:
PPS - Who wants to be the photo model on next year's tee shirt? There may be a little "Sports Illustrated cover photo hex" involved... ?? Get well ExtremeMarine...
