I have used this agenda to teach a number of BaseCamp haters to use the program in a few hours. They like the program now. I have completed the PC agenda and am currently working on the Mac agenda: https://www.newenglandriders.org/Learn_BaseCamp.htm
Thank (insert diety here) someone has done this.

I have found Basecamp to be unintuative and a PITA to use.

Really appreciated

My pleasure. Let me know how you do.

I use Basecamp and Tyre. I prefer Tyre, mainly because it's easy, but still use Basecamp from time to time. The one thing that annoys me with Basecamp, is that when viewing the map, every route I have shows up on it. Anyone know how to only see one route, or two?
Yes! I thought the same thing, "what a PITA seeing all the routes". But that's one of the keys to having and using the Temp (I renamed mine Temporary) List Folder and List. I set up a "master" List folder named 'Mobile', as in Mobile, Alabama. And a List in that folder named 'To Mobile'. I make my routes in steps with To Mobile highlighted in the upper pane so the routes are saved in the To Mobile List. Now I have 10 separate steps to form a complete route to Mobile, Al. I change the color of each step so I'm looking at 10 different routes instead of 1 long one. Here's the trick- when I want to edit a route (step) I drag and drop it from 'To Mobile' to 'Temp List' list. Then highlight Temp List. Poof! Only one route is shown. Do 2 if you want 2.

I also found to never, ever alter/edit in your "master" list folder. ALWAYS copy them to temp. If you change something in the master you can't go back with a click. If you change something in Temp you just remove from Temp what you don't want and the route in the master doesn't change. Also, this is why I don't use the same names over, like Temp for a list folder and Temp for a list. It gets confusing real fast. I named my list folder Temporary and my list Temp List so I could tell the difference.

I have downloaded the agenda and will be tackling this soon. Being a died in the wool Mapsucks user, I do hope I can get used to BaseCamp. The MS crashes are getting pretty tiresome.

It is easy. It is in the agenda that I posted.
Thanks Ed, but can you tell me where exactly?

Near the beginning.

Post #41, right up there ^^

Maybe you haven't noticed but Ed isn't answering questions. He's sending you back to do a little more research to see if you can figure it out. This can be an effective training technique in person but IMO it sux on the web. F'rinstance, the agenda doesn't specifically say, "to see only one of a dozen routes in a list, do this". But with a little practice the info is there.

I'm getting used to the BC side. IMO the routing part is very similar to MS, it's the List Folder/List/Temp thing that takes a bit of practice. But if you're like me all of a sudden the light comes on, the palm slaps face and you say out loud to yourself," Self! DuhHuh."

The agenda is not meant to be torn apart and for folks to pick and choose. It is easy and does not take more than a few hours to do. That being said:

E) Organizing Your List Folders and Lists Good organization of your My Collection Folders & Lists is the most important things that you can do to make BaseCamp easier. Your Library is shown in the upper left corner of your BaseCamp screen (see Figure 2.) Your library consists of a master folder called My Collection and other List Folders and Lists under My Collection. Think of My Collection as a file cabinet, List Folders as file cabinet folders, and Lists as sheets of paper with routes and waypoints. It is important to name your List Folders so that you can group similar rides. It is also important that you name your Lists so they describe your ride or trip.

1) I suggest that you create the following List Folders for the class and beyond: Temp, BONE, My_Rides, NER_Rides, and NER_Trips. To do this, right click on the "My Collection" folder and select "New List Folder." Name this first folder Temp. Repeat to create BONE, MY_Rides, NER_Rides, and NER_Trips List Folders. Create a Massachusetts List Folder in the BONE List Folder. To do this, right click on the "BONE" folder and select "New List Folder." Name this folder Massachusetts.

2) Next we are going to create a List called Temp in the Temp List folder, and a List called Favorites in My Collection. Right click on the Temp List folder and select "New List." Name this list Temp. Right click on the My Collection folder and select "New List." Name this list Favorites. The Favorites List is where you are going to keep Waypoints that you use a lot. Common Waypoints for this list will be Home, Vanilla Bean Cafe, Shell Orange and other points that you use often when creating routes. You will be able to copy and paste these Waypoints into other Lists when creating routes. The Temp List is a temporary clean workspace where you create routes before transferring to a final List folder. Any waypoints and routes that are not in a list will be listed in the "Unlisted Data" folder. If your organization is good you should have few items in the "Unlisted Data" folder. You do not want duplicate Waypoints. Create a Waypoint only once and then copy and paste it where needed. If you keep creating or downloading the same waypoint you will end up with Home, Home1, Home2, Home3, etc. Your BaseCamp will get messy in a hurry. Your Library should look somewhat like this: (my library has more folders than we have discussed, but you get the idea):

This was a great help for me finally understanding how data is used in BaseCamp and how to navigate the panels on the left side.

This sparked a binge of gps info searching last night and I found a custom vehicle for my BMW 635CSi which I installed on my Garmin for the Automotive mode. Has anyone made a custom vehicle for FJR1300?

After spending a couple of hours with your tutorial, I'm getting the hang of Basecamp.

One thing I can't seem to find is a way to take an existing route and set start and stop time of day or total travel hours( or distance) in a day to get the program to show overnight stops.

Is this possible?

I see the detail of the route when double clicking on it but don't see a way to change the daily route options.

Easy Ed,

Another happy user! Thanks for putting this together and sharing. I used it on my StreetPilot 2730. A couple of different menu paths (on the 2730) but straight forward enough to figure out.

Question, can I enter just favorite locations, but not a trip, in BC and then send to the GPS? e.g. local motorcycle dealers or a few local restaurants, neither of which may be part of a trip, but may need? (I know I can do that on the GPS itself.)

Thanks again!

Rich

Wow! What a project Ed.

I have always wanted to learn BaseCamp but know I would have no chance of learning it on my own without any knowledgeable friends or resources. I also have my doubts about being able to follow along and teach myself using your impressive training program but I am going to give it a try. Thanks for all the hard work!

Simple. Just drag and drop to the SD card of your gps as shown in the agenda.
Not so simple.

I found this when I tried it:

The single file of a route in BaseCamp is split into 2 different files on the SD card named 'route' and 'waypoints'. No relation in name to the original file. When a second route is copied, it is also split. But now it's 'route0' and 'waypoint0'. And a third copy becomes 'route1' and 'waypoints1'. The agenda does not address this.

What a frikkin nightmare of a file system this has turned out to be. I've yet to be able to figure it out. I still can't alter a route and save it as a different route- BaseCamp automatically saves it by changing all copies of it no matter how many different lists or list folders it's in. Any ideas of how to make it stop doing this? If I'm working in List Folder and List 'Temp" and 'Temp", why does BaseCamp change a file in a totally different List Folder? The only way I've found is to never, ever leave any files in the BaseCamp lists! Export each and every file to somewhere else- I use a folder in 'My Documents'- then completely remove/delete it from BaseCamp. If I don't, and I want to alter a route, BaseCamp changes them all. Yes, even if you have a route named 'route' and copy it so you have 'route1' BaseCamp will change route1 to match whatever changes you make to the original file 'route' if both are contained in the BaseCamp file system.

Again, what a frikkin nightmare of a file system this has turned out to be.

I have done this agenda with hundreds of riders and none of them had this problem. I have gotten lots of feedback and 99.9% is very favorable with no problems. I have no idea what you are doing.
