Went to swap out the air filter and found about a cup of bird seed in the air box. Wife has been storing bird seed in the garage. No wonder my gas mileage has been sub par.

Needless to say, there's a little box of de-con under the bike now, and I'm hoping I won't find a dead mouse in there next time I check. Got some stuff called "Shake Away" to scare them away, and somebody else recommended mothballs. Any other suggestions?

I hate them meeces to pieces, WBill

First do you have any dogs or cats that you like. If you do get rid of the de-con. It will kill them if they get into it. Unless that is also part of the plan. Next because my wife loves all animals and can not stand to kill them she makes me trap them in a have a heart trap.I use peanut butter. Then we take them to the barn and let the cat gets its chance with a fat slow mouse. I think it really is good sport. You know the last meal and all for the mouse. :assassin: :assassin:

Someone here posted up how they used some wire mesh to stop vermin getting into the intakes, but that won't stop them chewing your wiring.

Best is to have a cat, poison only makes them find somewhere cosy to die.

Little pests had the air filter of my GSX1100G half full of dog food when I checked it this spring. Gonna have to re bait the traps, I guess.

i have fought this battle for many years. the ONLY sure fire approach is to eliminate any source of food. If they don't have a food source they won't hang around. if you have pets this is hard to do.

Last summer I left a couple of granola bars in the trunk of my goldwing after a roadtrip and a month later I found mice had been in there.

2nd best approach is several 1/2 starved outdoor cats. they'll kill and eat anything with 2 or 4 legs their own size or smaller if they're hungry.

for storage coarse steel wool in the air intake and the exhaust outlet(s) plus mothballs around the bike has been very effective for me. don't omit the exhaust; it can take a loooong time to figure out that an engine won't start because the exhaust is blocked. I've heard it said they'll eat thru steel wool but I've never seen it. when I do this I tape a note to the mirror so I don't forget about the steel wool in the spring.

I hate the smell of mothballs. There is another option that works really well. It is an electronic mouse detractant. It plugs into the wall and it emits a noise we can't hear but a mouse can. It thinks it hears another dominant mouse. The mice will just stay away. Your wife will be happy as you're not a mouse killer, and there is no harm to any other dogs or cats. here is a link to the one I use.

Put one in every outlet in your garage and make sure the outlets are exposed. You can always take an extension cord, and plug it into that and leave it near the bike. I had a huge problem at the cottage. The wife told me to sell the cottage unless there were no mice left, guaranteed. Well, I used this product, and haven't seen mouse droppings or anything since.

I can't believe I talking about this on a bike forum, but hey.

I've seen mice chew through a hole plugged with HAMMERED IN steel wool, covered with chip board (ghetto board) which is nearly all glue and causes your skill saw to throw sparks when cutting it.

Don't screw with Northern Ontario mice!

I prefer the old fashioned snap wire mouse traps. I use a piece of a payday bar for bait and wrap it with thin wire so they can't just lick it off (without tripping the trap shut...seen them do this)

I put about five of them around and under the bike.

Guess it's more satisfying to me to see their little crushed skulls.....

You can paint numbers on them and take bets on who the cat will get last. ;) But seriously I use a combo of moth balls and snap traps. Seems to work well.

If we had a mouse problem, I'd go snap traps all the way. Use some peanut butter, and WHAM! No more stupid mouse.

Thankfully we have a really good exterminator and in 10 years in this house, we have only ever seen one mouse. We think he came in the open garage door, so even that one was a fluke.

I guess it also helps that my wife is psychotic about cleaning this "pig sty."

I had to laugh at the suggestions to put mouse bait near your bike. I tried that and here's the end result:

Yup, that stupid mouse decided to store those yummy pellets inside my air filter for future consumption. I can guarantee that he sampled the pellets and never made it back to eat the rest of his stash! :yahoo:

We don't get any mice in the garage, only black snakes and copperheads - probably why we have no mice. Occasionally a rogue bat.

The snakes seem to leave the bike alone.

Jeesh! That picture cracked me up! Never figured that.

We just moved back to the country, and I should have remembered about the mouse factor. We have no pets now, unless you count the mice and the prairie dogs. I like the cat idea. It worked well when I lived next to a grain elevator back in Carolina.

Thanks to all, WBill

That's pretty much how mine looked in June when I decided to change it. Yes I have dogs and cats, except the cats are in doors.

Had meeces a few years ago, I too had birdseed. Now I have bird seed in small rubber garbage can with LID. No more meeces so far.
