You know, sometimes I really like Skip. Other times, it's just like now...

Don and I talked about moving this to Pagosa. Durango is stupid expensive. Let me do some looking. Don said Pagosa was either booked or ridiculous too, but I'll make some calls. The last email he sent me was for a casino/resort just outside Durango, a bit north of Ignacio. It actually sounds like a good idea.

I have been crazy busy at work. I'm really sorry it's been a while, I just haven't had the chance to sit at a computer and make the required phone calls. I'll get on it soon, and I'll do what I can. Personally, I cannot afford $200/night, and I'm hoping for something around $75/night but we'll see. That may be hard with our requirements.

I'll throw in my thoughts here. Western tourist mountain towns (Durango, Jackson, Park City, etc.....) are just too expensive anymore except for off-season (non-riding weather). I looked at the Sky Ute Casino you mentioned, 22 miles from Durango. While it looks like a nice place and the rooms might not be too expensive, it's isolated. As in no restaurants (except the ones in the Casino), walmarts, maybe even gas stations around. So after riding you're captive to that one place if you're having a few drinks and parking for the night.

When we did SWFOG in Salida that was a good venue. Cheap motels, a few choices to eat walking distance. A bit of a ride to get to the good stuff but towns like that are about the only place you'll get rooms for the rate that will bring people--under $100/night. Maybe Cortez? Or on the other side of the million dollar (550) Montrose?

BTW let's help pitch in and help AJ out with this since Don was helping him plan it. Let's still make it happen. Maybe some local CO riders can give input and help find a decent motel.

Just for comparison--I have stayed at the Hampton in Montrose a couple of times, and it was nice. Current room rates are about $145/night down to $94 for Government rates. Don't know what/if a group rate would be. I recall it was about the same or within $20 per night for several other motels. Food is OK (fast located next door with gas stations/liquor store) to some really good places in the down town area. There was even a large multi-brand motorcycle dealer close by who put on Nat'l VStrom ride that year, plus a Wal-mart.

Hampton has a pool and jacuzzi, but I don't think it has a meeting room or banquet facilities.

And there was a motel on the south edge of town that did the banquet for the 50 or 60 riders. Don't recall the name, but recall the food sucked.

Thoughts read and noted. Spud, I had the same concerns as you. I don't remember why every time we bring up Gunnison, people say that was a terrible place to have a meet.

Give me a few, and I'll get serious. If you guys have ideas, please post them. I'll use everything I can.

A.J., I am not suggesting, just commenting. I stayed in Gunnison a couple years ago and found it to be a pleasant, clean, lovely little town. There were several hotels and motels although I have no idea if they have the facilities to do what you need. It is also located in the center of some wonderful riding. Any direction you point from there you have to go on a great road.

It is hard for me to think about fun stuff right now. The loss of Don Stanley has cast a shadow over my Christmas happiness.

Stay in Gunnison regularly - usually one night at a time before setting up hunting camp. Stayed there a couple of nights last summer in between heading to Telluride & Cortez, then up US 550 and finally down CO 149 to Lake City, Creede and Monte Vista. It's a college town, so there should be some banquet facilities. That trip to SW Colorado is what convinced my wife we needed an FJR. I don't think you can go wrong with Gunnison. The down side of Gunnison is that it's not what most people visualize as a mountain town. It's something of a ranching town.

Here's what I can tell you...

Montrose, CO

Rooms will be ~ $120/night. ($110+8.85% tax). This INCLUDES a Hot Breakfast... Normally Rooms at this time of year run $149-$169. Rooms in Colorado in a place that is conducive to an event like this are NOT cheap. If you look at Wayne's EOM location discussion thread you can see what goes into finding a place. They have to be motorcycle friendly, have event space, be close enough to multiple eating/drinking options, and a bunch of other crap...

The rally fee will be separate from the shirt. The rally fee should be less than $40, probably less than $30 depending on a couple of things. Realize there's costs involved in just taking payment...

We believe this is very reasonable...

Please understand this post is only to try and provide information so people can gauge their costs associated with taking vacation...

I guess I don't know what conversations have happened off-line, but looking around quick the Days Inn in Montrose has 4 star reviews on Trip Advisor, has a conference center, and rates I'm finding for that time are $89 a night + tax. We stayed at a Days Inn I believe for NAFO 2014.

the last one I did was ~17m as well.
