So if I supply lots of brew, can we design a GOOD Bluetooth comm system on your machine???
Actually, I am working on some software defined radio stuff. Bluetooth, 802.11abg, WiMax, whatever. I'm also working on an embedded information appliance for a bike. I use Octave and GNURadio for this sort of thing.

Man, do I love me some Quake. Nothing like jumping right in to a virtual world, killing off a few of your closest friends, and then popping in some porn on the split screen. :) :yahoo: :yahoo:
Missed this on the first read. YEAH!!!!

It's nice that you can run all those wonderful scientific apps, but we are talking about an average/novice home user. I will stand by my statement, that it's a crap OS for home use, especially for a novice/average home user, which the original poster obviously is. I think you literally listed about every game that can run under linux, for most people that want to get games for their kids or even for themselves, linux is useless. Feel free to continue to pop a blood vessel and rant about how great it is for you though.
My 78-year young grandfather is running linux on a desktop I built for him. He can check email, and if he felt inclined, surf whatever site he wants to. It's his first computer, so I might call him a "novice" and he has no issue using it.

It's far more user-friendly that it was the last decade you took the time to notice it. The Live versions allow you to test drive a lot of things without committing them to your personal computer. Take it for a spin before you call it crap and dismiss it.

back to the topic; use webmail, like gmail/yahoo/hotmail - they scan for a/v, filter junk/spam and have lots of other features. (i.e. l being less susceptible to those virus emails that forward to everyone in your contact list). don't click on crap you don't expect to get. Get FireFox (as others have mentioned)

I don't run a/v on my XP laptop... stick that in your Mac and suck it. :)

You've installed it a few times since 98 or 99. You admit you have no current knowledge of how many apps run on it. You admit that things may have changed in the past couple years. Then you go on to say it's currently crap, in spite of your admissions. Whoops...I can't help it....yep...I just formed an opinion of your ability to give opinions. Sometimes, when you don't know what you're talking about, the best answer is a simple "I don't know", or, even better, to just keep your mouth shut.
My machine runs a 1-year old nVidia 8800GT, driving 2 22" LCDs in dual screen mode (44" of screen space). It runs a web cam. It renders videos. It dumps and processes pictures from all of my cameras. It runs *HUNDREDS* of scientific computing applications. It lets me simulate digital logic designs in multiple languages, including VHDL and verilog. It runs Unreal Tournament. It runs Quake, Doom, Enemy Territory, etc. It runs a web server. It runs a complete quite of forensics tools. It runs Open Source equivalents of absolutely every office application. It can both produce and consume Dolby 5.1 audio. It lets me watch HDTV and record it to a PVR running on the same box. It NEVER crashes. It NEVER goes down. It NEVER gets a virus. It NEVER slows down. It does absolutely everything this home user requires, and quite a bit more.
Look at how personal you took it, like I am insulting you or your family. Quite amusing. Obviously you are quite immature to take something like this so personally.
I took nothing personally. I merely pointed out from direct personal experience that you are completely mistaken about the number of applications available, the diver support available, and the overall merit of the OS to the home user. That's not taking it personally, and, more to the point, it's also not talking out of my ass the way you seem inclined to do.

So this, "installed linux a few times since 98 or 99, and it's one of the platforms we program for at work," equals no knowledge uh?
In your case? Yes. You've learned nothing from the experience. Even though, according to you, you repeated the experience several times.

Last time I installed linux was in 2004, which is why I made allowances for changes with "Maybe things have changed in the past couple of years". I am quoting myself because it seems that you may have a few reading comprehension problems.
You're quoting yourself because you've been comfortable in the confines of your own ignorance for so long that it's become an unbreakable habit. Go get some current personal experience, or read something on the topic, for the love of God.

It's nice that you can run all those wonderful scientific apps,
Quite literally, you have no idea.

but we are talking about an average/novice home user.
Who is we, Kemosabe?

I will stand by my statement,
Of course you will. Anything else, and I'd be forced to change my opinion of you.

that it's a crap OS for home use, especially for a novice/average home user, which the original poster obviously is.
See Twistedcricket's post for an unsolicited and timely example of just how completely uninformed you are.

I think you literally listed about every game that can run under linux, for most people that want to get games for their kids or even for themselves, linux is useless.
This probably won't come as any surprise to you, or me, but you're completely wrong, again.

Feel free to continue to pop a blood vessel and rant about how great it is for you though.
Feel free to, again, admit that you have no idea what you're talking about and then speak anyway. Or, STFU.

Twistedcricket's grandfather can use it because Twistedcricket is supporting and configuring it, and in his example, he is using two apps, email and web browsing. If that's all you are using it for, then you can't beat the price, and it's great to not give MS more money.

"STFU" is for children, and those that cannot handle opposing points of view. Your whole rants consists of getting upset because I insulted your booboo kitty or something, "Booboo kitty is the best evar!" So whatever floats your boat guy. But in my final word, I have used linux, installed it, and programmed for it, and in my opinion, a MS hater for years, it's complete crap for a home OS, especially for gamers. If you do not like that opinion, then tough shitski.

Support is "Still working?" "Yep". Installation was 1) insert dvd 2) power on 3) click Next until finished 4) click Reboot. It's far simpler to install, use and support than in the past.

Sure my grandfather is only using two apps, that I know of. He's probably found Solitaire. Perhaps he's figured out that there's a calculator too. For all I know he blogs about soybean, corn and pork belly futures.

Consider this; he'll never get a virus as he's using webmail and the email address is so messy that the family was upset with me for a week (until they all added it to their own address books) that spam is minimal at best and the online webmail filters it. I've added the specific family email addresses to the whitelist and he's not about to give out the email address or sign-up for crap online.

If I could find a useful means to run MapSource for my GPS, I'd be winders free.

Hardcore gamers are on a whole different level. If you're happy sitting in a dark room blowing up people and cursing at a monitor then Linux isn't for you. Nor are social events like NAFO :p

If you need multimedia support, it's difficult now to justify the cost of all of the applications running on winders versus those available for linux.

BOOBOO KITTY IS THE BEST EVR! all your base are belong to me! :)

 Hey now, lets not disparage hardcore gamers, not all people get blown up these days, and game companies are starting to put the sun in their games, so that we aren't so shocked when we see it on those rare trips outside.
