So we're in agreement that the liter strom will beat the new improved Funduro. The girlie storm/Funduro matchup will be interesting, I think that will be a real fun scenerio to see play out in the real world. ....and personally, i'm confident that when we quit being keyboard jockeys and put the tires to the mud, the 650strom will give that new funduro a real challenge ...especially if riding more than 200miles :)all in good fun, the test will be in the riding, not the typing.

I do hope it can do more than shown [yawn] here(clicky)

Here's the information that I've received from Gunter in Munchen und Hans in Berlin: 85 horsepower at 8,000 rpm; 63 foot lbs. of torque at 5,800 rpm; 400 lbs. dry weight; 4.4 gallon tank capacity; tested to 115 mph, close to a V-Strom.
Great, thanks for sharing the info .....and those spec's are near the ladies' version of the strom, not the men's version. :)
Note to self: Add RenJohn to jimmy kick list. Make sure I'm wearing stiletto pumps. :****:

Compression/fuel :1 12.0/Super unleaded (95 RON)
YIKES!!! Don't think you'd wanna take that off-roading in Mexico!

Don't think Pemex brews anything stronger than about 67 RON IIRC. :)

Would hate to run out in Chihuahua....

....although TWN has run out IN a Chihuahua!
Howie, you simple minded twit. We don't use RON measure in the US.

From Wiki:

87 octane fuel, the "regular" gasoline in the US and Canada, would be 91-92 in Europe. However most European pumps deliver 95 (RON) as "regular", equivalent to 90-91 US (R+M)/2, and even deliver 98 (RON) or 100 (RON).

Beat it on the street? I sure the hell hope so considering it has a 25% larger engine. Beat it in the off-road? I think that all depends on what the F800 turns out to be. Pictures and specs don't tell the whole story.

You do know that the F650 will still be made, right? The 800 is not a "replacement". Oh and the funduro name is not applied to all of the F650 models.

As to the Weestrom beating this new bike, the same as I stated above applies, it all depends on what the F800 turns out to be. In terms of engines, and just on paper, the F800 seems to have it hands down over the Weestrom.

DL1000 is rumored to be dead after 2008. This new F-GS will spank the DL650. 62 HP (or 66 source dependent) v. 85 HP on a lighter platform pretty much sums it up.

Apples to apples comparo, you Taco Bell Dog humpin' bonehead. The given specs were RON, so I used (an imaginary) RON number in my reply.

Sheesh! Whaddya do? Lose your sense of the absurd when you started lusting over the Austrian WeedEater?

Geeze TWN, I came in here with a couple of insults proven to stir the pot A.) referring to the 650 strom as the womens' version

B.) Calling any chain driven GS a Funduro (my favorite, recalling those great Funduro adds that really got under the skin of the BMW adventure touring posers)

Both these really get most folks' panties in a wad, but didn't get much play here. I'm either getting bad in my **** stirring, or these guys are of too high of sophistication for this hick from Nevada.

Ya, the 800GS does earn a hard look, no doubt about it. I'm told guys are budgeting around 13K for a modestly (OEM) farkled one (before tax!). You can buy a lot of PEMEX with that kind of coin

....and speaking of PEMEX, I'm also in agreement that my bike runs better on the stuff, however, I'm also told that PEMEX is refined in the USA, I'm having a hard time beleiving that, I'm trying to get the real scoop, but maybe one of these sophisticates knows the answer.

So, who's going to be the first on here to buy the improved Funduro?? I'm hoping you'll give me the chance to spank you with my men's version of the strom. Cheers from Reno ...john

Am I confused or is the chain on the wrong side? :unknw:
That new Beemer likes like the shizzat. I'll bet they will be very proud of it though, if past history tells us anything. Prolly cost as much as a brand new Feejer.
MSRP is $10,520. ABS is an $895 option. Once the initial rush dies down, you should be able to get a non-ABS model for about $9500. For a 120mph, 800CC, 85HP, torquey 360-degree twin with a 3-year/36K warranty, that aint bad. Ain't Japanese cheap, but it ain't bad. Oh, and full bags/trunk are available. Prolly under $900 for the set.

I can't guarantee these prices, ..and they are for the ST, but my guess is that they'll be close:Heated Hand Grips

$235.00

ABS

$890

Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM)

$260.00

On Board Computer

$250.00

White Turn Indicator

$50.00

Anti - Theft Alarm

$235.00

Center Stand

$120.00

Dual Bench Seat - Low (31.1 Inches)

N/C

Figure another $1K for the bags and we are already at $13K +, without tax and prep.

Yeah, well when you hang with rookies you tend to become one. Hang around here some more... We'll snap you out of the wimp zone. ;)

Saludos Reno John: I love a good challenge and since you have thrown down the gauntlet, I’m going to pick it up! Since you challenged me, I get to set the course; so forget about 200 miles, we’re going to ride 2,000 miles around Baja. Two Wheel Nut, Fred W and others, I sincerely hope that you can also join this Dual Sport Challenge. I’m also going to make sure that Don Carver sees this and I’m hoping that SkooterG will consider buying my KLR 650 so that he can ride along. If any of you have a wife or girlfriend that wanted to drive a support vehicle, this would allow us to ride out to San Francisquito and camp on the beach. We’ll not want to try to tackle SF with all of our camping gear on our motos.

My new F800GS will not arrive until May, however that gives me nine months to hone my skills to take on the big V-Strom for the 130 horrendous dirt miles of the San Francisquito loop. That gnarly stretch of mountainous desert will separate the men from the boys!

A bonus for many of you is that you can continue south to Dos Cabos from Loreto. I led SkooterG to Dos Cabos for his first motorcycle trip into Mexico and he can lead you to Land’s End.

SPRING - 2009 BAJA CALIFORNIA DUAL SPORT M/C RIDE!

By CHUY MEDINA “EL BURRITO BALLERINA”

Greetings to the FJR Forum from Don Stanley! I always like your motorcycling attitudes; you folks are game for any and all motorcycle adventure travels!!

Even though it’s a year & more away I agree that it’s still a fine time to start planning an extensive dual sport motorcycle tour of the Baja Peninsula. Below is a suggested itinerary for this expedition and I’m tentatively naming the dates of March 7-March 15 in 2009.

BIBLIOGRAPHY: I’ve planned the trip below from forty years of riding into Mexico (particularly Baja since my hometown is Morro Bay, California) and these great sources!

1) MOTORCYCLE JOURNEYS THROUGH BAJA by Clement Salvadori; ISBN 1-884313-08-6; 1977. Please Note: Signore Salvadori has come out with a Second Edition of both this book and the fabulous Motorcycle Journeys through California book; and both new editions will be bound under one cover. I have the old version, but buy yourself the new one at: www.WhitehorseGear.com for this new book, Toll Free at 1-800-531-1133; $24.95, plus $6 shipping, and the order number is A-MJCA-2.

2) BAJA CALIFORNIA MAP by Automobile Club of Southern California; ISBN 1-56413-614; 2003. Wide World of Maps in Phoenix and Mesa has this.

3) BAJA CALIFORNIA MAP by The Rough Guides; ISBN 1-84353-221-2. Real nice 1:650,000 scale and contour heights; got at book store in Todos Santos.

Camping versus Lodging: Since I’m also riding in New Zealand and the Pyrenees for two weeks in 2008 and need the vacation time, I will only be able to spend nine days total on this Baja Trip. So I am writing this up as to how I will negotiate the routes to Loreto and back to Estados Unidos. For those of you continuing on to Dos Cabos - Baja California “Let your front wheel be your guide”!

To save muy dinero for my New Zealand trip and the Pyrenees trip I’ll be camping wherever conditions allow!

SATURDAY - Barrio del Chandler to San Felipe all pavement for 375 miles. We will pick up and pay for our Tourist Cards in Mexicali. Many places to camp or for lodgings. You of the FJR Forum from California can meet us at the Denny’s Restaurant in Calexico at Noon.

SUNDAY – San Felipe - Bahia Gonzaga - Bahia de Los Angeles; 125 paved, 100 dirty.

MONDAY – Bahia de Los Angeles to San Ignacio; 210 miles of pavement; two lodgings.

TUESDAY – San Ignacio - watch grey whales in Scorpion Bay – Loreto. 240 miles dirt.

WEDNESDAY – Here’s the point where Chuy Medina “El Burrito Ballerina” will start his northward return to Estados Unidos. Loreto to the San Javier Mission to La Purisima then to Bahia Concepcion and the night spent in Santa Rosalia. 225 paved miles, 90 dirt.

THURSDAY – Santa Rosalia to Catavina is 280 paved miles; camp at Rancho Santa Inez

FRIDAY – Catavina to Mike’s Sky Rancho. 200 paved, 60 dirty. See www.vivabaja.com

SATURDAY – Mike’s Sky Ranch to Ensenada Lunch/Shop to Tecate. 155 paved 25 dirt

SUNDAY – Tecate to Barrio del Chandler – 330 miles of pavement. Bienvenidos USA!

POSTSCRIPT: Also, I will volunteer my 2006 Jeep Liberty Common Rail Diesel and this four wheel drive can serve as support vehicle for our riders group of AZ Beemers & Fast Tour Riders & FJR Forum. That is, if we can find a wife, girlfriend, or girlie-man from FJR Forum (that will not be riding dual sport on this trip) to drive the Jeep.

Alternate Route: MONDAY – Bahia de Los Angeles to San Francisquito to San Ignacio. 105 miles pavement and 130 miles off road. We’ll carry a five gallon gas can on the roof rack for the bikes and then we can pack the group’s luggage in the Jeep. Route is rated XXX!!

Well if Yamaha doesn't bring over the Tenere I could well see one of these appearing in my garage.

Probably buy it in the US though, We just lost our independent BMW dealer, nearest one is now in Montreal.

Cdn$ also is north of $1.10 US this morning. :exclamation:

Chris

the XT is a single. I'd much prefer a twin 800 if money is no object.

LOL NICE very NICE. You made my day, just when I was beginning to think that this thread was a precursor to street ****** anonymous, you step up. May the bike lords bless you senor beemerdons.
So, I like your plans, a big fan of the Magic that only Baja can bring. I'm slightly confused on the date, you mention your new bike in May, and there is a mention of 2009(?)....please clarify that for me (please). I'm doing a mexico trip in April (do this every April), aprox three weeks in the interior, somtimes I come home via baja, but not sure if I will this time. Last time(clicky) I elected to spend more time in the interior. Other times I've done Baja coming home (baot to LaPaz, down to southern Baja, then north)

BTW, last thanksgiving (clicky) I did a small loop into Mex, a wonderful time as it is starting to get chilly up here. I did rural roads following the Jesuit missionaries' path north. I'm very dissapointed that I can't duplicate that again this Thanksgiving.

I like your route, familiar with much of it. Sounds good. You've got a good mix ...too bad not more time to go further south, but certainly a great mix. should the opportunity arise, I might swing by to see my only friend(clicky)

So, beemerdons, thanks for stepping up, thanks for the fun, and thanks for taking the juvenile bait .....I see some good fun, good roads and some great silliness ahead. cheers from reno ...john

OH PS: I will dare to say that the F800GS (or as renojohn calls it ...the improved BMW Funduro) should be a PEFECT bike for your splendid mix of fun.

Hola Reno Juan:

Thanks for sharing the Mexico Ride Pictures with me. Very nice to meet a fellow member of ANTI-street ****** anonymous!

The next opening I've got for a full week of Moto riding will be after the first of the year of 2009. My 11 year old son Seth and I are going to New Zealand from March 8-20 of 2008; we have a Harley-Davidson FLH rented out of Queenstown, South Island.

May 24 through June 4th I am riding with Stef - teerex51 from here and his friends from the Italian FJR Forum Group through the Pyrenees, Andorra and Costa Brava. In addition to these trips I am a Director of AZ Beemers, a BMWMOA and BMWRA Chartered M/C Club. So I have a number of Beemer functions that I am required to attend as a Club Officer; such as the MOA Rally in Gillette, Wyoming in July and the RA Rally in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri in September. No mas vacation time!

So I tentatively threw out March 7-15, 2009 for this trip, but anytime from January 1 to April 30th would be just fine with me!

In three hours time I'll be having dinner with SkooterG and his lovely lady Jane. I'm going to try and put the full court press on El Pendejo to see if he will commit to driving my Jeep on this trip. What better girlie-man than Greg Marbach for this chore!

You may have seen the earlier paged link I sent to Fred W of our latest Club Ride to Mexico's Copper Canyon. Muy magnifico!

To get you out of the chill of Reno, if you could fly into Phoenix's Sky Harbor Aeropuerto on Thursday evening, February 14 and make plans to fly home on the morning of Tuesday 2/19; I would be glad to pick you up and you could stay at mi casa.

Friday morning the 18th, my girlfriend Barbara and I'll be on my FJR heading to Bahia Kino, Sonora for the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend with AZ Beemers & Fast Tour Riders Group. You would be most welcome to ride my Kawasaki KLR 650 and join us on this trip. Go to www.azbeemers.org/forum under Upcoming Rides to see more details of the trip. For my report & photos of my ride in Andalucia, Spain and our Club Ride to Baja California Norte just look under Ride Reports from the Road.

If you have an interest in Alpine riding, go to https://www.azbeemers.org/forum/index.php?topic=537.0 and check it out.

I was stationed in Augsburg, Germany for two years and that started my BMW addiction; and my addiction to riding the Alps.

My best buddy is an Israeli-naturalized American Uri Schumm. https://www.azbeemers.org/forum/index.php?topic=536.0

I am very close friends with Skip and Nancy Mascorro, the owners of MOTO-DISCOVERY, and I really hope in 3 years time, when I go on Social Security, that I may be fortunate enough to work for them as a Tour Guide with Pancho Villa Moto-Tours.

https://www.motodiscovery.com/tours.html That is me on the left with my ladyfriend Rena; Yamaha tankbag on my R1100GS.
