I had major problems with rear view. I had seen this thread using FZ1 mirrors, but I didnt like the look, so I decided to make some oval spacers in the same profile as the rubber gasket. I extended the studs/bolts with threaded sleeve. The spacers are made out of carbon fibre resin, then clad in carbon fibre cloth and laquered . They are 50mm deep ( 2 inch in american), look very neat and give me the necessary shoulder clearance too. Ill take some photos for if anybody is interested in the look.
Andy

And you think they look better with the spacers than a set of FZ1 mirrors? Yes, we will need some pictures! ;)
You maybe right there, :D

Putting the FZ1 mirrors on my gen 1 was one of my first farkles. the stockers required me to dip in my elbows in order to see where is just was. I have to believe that Mama Yama was aware of this mirror shortcoming and chose not to address it with the Gen 2 design. Its been pretty obvious from all the posts over the years on this and other forums that the stockers were not very effective.

Yes the FZ1's look a little antennea like but safety outweighs styling in my book. Maybe in years to come the mirrors will have an extendable feature like some pickups trucks have??

Cheapest price I found for brand new GenI FZ-1 mirrors was from Gary McCoy at Mondak Motorsports - $42.85 each (before shipping).

Are those just straight spacers?

Aside from your choice of material, are they different than these?

We tried that last year with disappointing results. The mirrors extend forward more than out to the sides. <Link>

They are virtually the same in design, except I used carbon fibre resin/hardner as the substrate. I played with different depths until I had the necessary clearance past my shoulders. They do move the wing mirrors forward, but I reckon it looks okay. Ive an idea for extending the mirrors, Ill post once Ive perfected it.

Edit: Ive just read the thread you linked to. Wow, there is alot of thought and engineering gone into those spacers. I used a threaded hex spacer and used thread lock to make the connection, then used the same size bolt with a springwasher to mount the mirror back on to the fairing. Because mine are 2" deep I had plenty of thread length to attach to.

Looking at your aluminium side spacers, do they need to be so long? Mine are 2" and give me the clearance I need and are mounted on a 45 degree angle, so maybe a 1" to 1.5" length would suffice. The cnc finish is excellent. Your design looks good and is easier to fit than mine which involved removing part of the inner fairing.

One thing I noticed when looking at the various threads about FZ1 Mirrors is there wasn't a picture comparison between the two for Gen II bikes.

So here you go...

One thing that doesn’t get a lot of mention in the various threads is that the OEM rubber gasket between the mirror base and the fairing is too small in width and length for the FZ1 mirror base, although it will work. To remedy this I ended up creating my own out of some 1/8 inch thick sheet rubber.

OEM Mirrors / FZ1 Mirrors

As you can see in the last two pictures the view gained with the FZ1 mirrors more than compensates for the loss of the pretty painted OEM mirrors. <img src="https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" :) " border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Is there anyway those pictures of the FZ1 mirrors could be reposted. They are not appearing on my screen, and when I try to go to the URL for them, they error out.

The SW-motech pictures are fine.

Thanks,

Rhynno

I wish I coul remember where I ordered these from. I've been more than happy with the increased view. I barely see my arms or shoulders in the mirrors anymore, and with these little spot mirrors I have zero blind spot. Makes my commute in traffic much nicer. Pardon the mess in the garage- my basement got some water in it recently so everything got moved into MY space.
