on the left hand side of my motor bike I have a small oil leak which looks like a push in sensor at the top of the casing. can anyone tell me what this wire is for and how can I fix the leak. this is my first fjr. thankyou.

It sounds like you are describing the wire feed-thru on top of the stator housing. IMO, the only way to fix the leak will be to remove the stator housing, remove the rubber piece and clean it entirely of oil then reseal it using an automotive type RTV. The Factory Service Manual calls out a specific Yamaha sealant. Removing the stator cover will be a fight against the magnet. I found the rubber feed-thru is a pain get sealed and reinstalled properly. If you choose to repair it yourself let us know because many here will offer good help.

+1. I had the same problem a few years back. The force is strong with this magnet. Hard pull you must..... but pull not too hard or on your butt fall down you will.

And when reinstalling the cover, do not keep fingers on the mating surface. They will get bitten when the magnet garbs the coil and pulls the cover down hard.

Voice of experience, word to the wise, all of that.

im sorry for the multiple posts as this is my first time using this site.i would appreciate all the help and advice to fixing this problem what parts do I need .I will post a picture if I can

Its leaking from the black rubber entering the casing next to the frame, its a very slight weep. Can this be pulled out to sort or does the casing have to be removed.

Thanks again

Interesting! Your avatar info says '04 Gen I, yet the wire leaving the stator runs in a Gen II direction. In any case both are the same style feed-thru.

The rubber plug isn't a straight sided plug that can be pulled out, it is molded with a groove in the middle where it is entrapped by the housing. The cover has to be at least partly pulled apart to free the feed-thru so that it can be cleaned and gooped.

The feed-thru is in the lower right corner of my picture.

Don't try to just pull it out, you won't like the results. Like ion said, pull the cover off, pop the rubber pass through out and clean it up really well, then use an automotive rtv to seal around the rubber part. You'll need to get a new gasket for the generator cover.

Oh, and while you're there, do take a pic of the Stator, if it's a BBQ as the one Ion posted you might as well save yourself the trouble of doing this again soon and replace the Stator

Of course if you wanted to use the "shade tree" method you could clean the area around the rubber really well and smudge a big glob of clear RTV silicone all around that joint. It will probably stop your leak until you have to pull the cover off to replace the Stator. There's not a lot of (any) pressure hitting that joint so I recon it will work.

The picture of my OEM stator is actually typical of what they look like. As long as the stator has shades of tan or brown it is normal. Black, well not so much. Here is a picture of my Electrosport stator after ~40k miles:

StatorDamage.jpg

This is in shades of black and carbon which is not good. The circle indicates where the wire insulation failed and shorted the windings.

This is what the stator looked like when new, there has been a slight change in the color

Thanks for all the help, got a new gasket ordered so will go at it some evening during the week. Just on the stator, my bike has just under 10000 miles, it would hardly be damaged would it already? Thanks again.

Stock stators don't go bad without some severe abuse. If your stator is stock it should be good for >200K miles as long as you don't run a refrigerator or oven with your bike. Electorsport stators -- not so much; expect 30k-40k miles between changes. Really.

Fridges and ovens really don't take a lot of energy compared to say.....air conditioning units. You been jumping cars with low batteries?

Hi, got the cover off this evening, cleaned the casings and the gasket sealer some one else had previously put around the rubber. I then put on new gasket and packed the rubber seal with gasket seal. Now my problem is when I went to tighten all the bolts the one closest to the rubber cable seal decided it wasn't going to tighten fully because the previous mechanic or owner has pulled most of the threads its seems.

The problem bolt is slightly catching and I was thinking could I get a slightly longer bolt would this work or will I end up stripping it again and heli coiling it?

Any ideas or advise welcome and thanks in advance again

Wow, sucks to be you. It sounds like the heli coil is toast and yer going to have to put another one in. I hate dealing with heli coils.
