Plugged fuel filter?

Used the Por-15 to clean and line the Zooks tank-it's the best on the market, hands down. Trouble is, the acid etch has to be in the tank for a while, and you aren't gonna want the pump in there with it. So, either a junk pump or a patch to cover the opening is needed. As far as the diagnosis on all this, how many involved expected to literally see Bob Ballard in Alvin working 'round Howies pump on Nat Geo? The Zook is 40+ years old, and it's tank was pristine compared to what I see there. That it ran at all is a miracle, and once again is testimony to the robustness of the pump in particular, the bike in general. Also, just think, now that several trouble spots have been cleaned up in the process, how sweet that thing is gonna run once the tank is sorted out. ;) But honestly, as new as the bike is, I'd be getting a new tank. And pump. Wasn't an option with the Zook. It is with your Feej.

Actually, S76 may have further condemned the fuel pump. After more thinking on this, the temp is simply a sidebar, until the fans kick on. The bike runs for a while, the pump heats up, at about the same time the temp gets in running range, the pump has heated up enough to begin to slow. The fan kicks on, big amp draw, pulling juice from the system and denying the fuel pump the only thing that was keeping it alive at all-full access to system volts/amps. Once there's competition, it sez **** it, line pressure drops, flow diminishes, pump unable to keep engine alive at speed. Time, not temp. Slow down, it can supply enough to keep things moving. Once it starts slowing though, I would imagine occasionally once in a while it won't even flow at low speed-a cool down restores it to partial life. It would, if this is the case, eventually fail even without the fans, once high demand had been placed on it for x amount of time. These are classic pump failure symptoms.
Did Rad nail it or what? :yahoo:

Thanks for the goose chase, howie. Was fun whilst it lasted. I hope my jihad will kick in soon and you won't be riding till you buy another skoot.

Jihad THIS~ :****:

Won't be buying a new skoot anytime soon.

While the Feej is sidelined for the next week or so, there's PLENTY of life left in this one:

I thought you were one of the kawasaki bashers? What gives?
Oh no...not me. In fact, the Feej is the first non-Kaw I've ever owned since 1970. No regrets, though, as I love the FJR.

The only bad thing I've ever had to say about Kawasakis is their saddles. NEVER had a Kaw whose seat was worth a fook.

And yes, that's a Sargent seat on my Kaw.

Of course, a jagged 2x4 would be better than a stock Kaw seat. :)

The good news is that's NOT rust in the pictures....it's Carnie spooge.

Bad new is, the Feej is preggers.

And I have the most horrible premonition, the kid's gonna look like this

Nah...it's rust. Chemically dissolving rust as I type.

It's like the Maxwell House coffee can lid was made to seal up the fuel pump opening. :)

Tossed in about $10 worth of pennies with the rust remover and have been doing the shake, rattle and roll for the past couple of hours.

It's actually amazing how shiny and new looking the inside of the tank is.

I'm gonna put it all together tonight, if time allows (getting all those pennies out's gonna be a bitch) and when the POR-15 tank kit gets here, pull the tank off and do it all again.

Test the Maxwell Cup seal for tightness first?5,4,3,2,1 Odot?
Yep. worked like a charm.

And getting all those pennies out WAS a bitch!

Dried it out, took the tank to the nearby Shell and put 2 gallons in.

Put it all back together and the pump sprays fuel damn near across the garage.

Ran about a pint into a glass jar to clear out anything that might have been left in the pump and it's running strong and clear.

Still have to clean out the injectors. Bike runs, but not well. At least I know it's not rust in the tank clogging up the pump...but like Rad suggested, the injectors are probably just as bad as the pump was.

Gotta work Saturday mornin' so I'll begin the disassembly process tomorrow night and finish up Saturday afternoon.

It's lookin' good, guys and gals. :yahoo:

Anyone recommend a good injector cleaning/flow testing company?

The Internet's full of 'em. $15-$18 per injector seems to be a typical price, but if any youse guys had a good experience with a shop, I'd like to know.

$60 to $75 bucks for a pro to do the job seems like good insurance to me.
