Damn, this news totally sucks.

I'm very relieved your going to recover Mike! Take care of yourself and take it easy when you get home. Best wishes for an easy recovery!

Mike, Just read of your misfortune as I've been out tearing up northern Colorado on my KLR for the past 3 days. You get well soon, and listen to the doc. I bet you were having a blast on the ride wern't ya? Gotta love it man. I'll see you in Denver. Steve

Mike,

This really blows! I've been on a 10 day ride to Glacier NP and beyond, just got back and then read this post about your mishap. Hate to hear about this happening to anyone, but especially a good guy like you who always is concerned about safety. Guess it shows it can happen to the best of them, but really sorry it was you. Mend up quickly, I'm holding out hope we can still go for a trans sierra ride soon! If you need help with anything, let me know.

John

Mike,

I just got on this morning and saw this thread with 5 pages of posts and figured it had to be an old one....I'm really sorry to hear of your get off and am hoping that all goes well with your recuperation. Hang in there.....

If you have ever met Mike, you know he is one of the best people you're likely to meet on a motorcycle or anywhere else.
So sorry to hear this. Made my stomach drop out. Mike you helped my new wife and i on our travels out west...thank you for that. I hope you are feeling better with each new day. We're pulling for you.

Wow....

Damn mang, pain pills will be your friend for a while. Really glad no broken bones and just a few fractures. That means it's mostly banged up muscles, which hurts like hell, but heals way quicker with fewer long time side effects than broken bones.

Heal up fast man! For those of you who don't wear ATGATT, take this as another gleaming example of how important it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ugh...was gone all weekend...just now seeing this and I don't like what I'm seeing - this is horrible news. Get better Mike - very, very glad it sounds like you're going to be okay.

All my best,

Pigster

No-no Mike, that's not the way we roll!

You are the little (BIG) voice inside my helmet telling me to take it easy. I'm sad you are hurting and hope this does not stick with you long. Christy and I are thinking of you, heal well buddy.

*** Mikey update ***cuts and bruises on his face...
I guess he got bruised/abraded from something inside his helmet (microphone, glasses?) but dang, that really means he would've been hurt bad without one.
Helmet first into the guardrail post will do that.
I didn't see his helmet but Mike tells me there's a hole punched in it !! The outcome would have been really different had he not been wearing it, but that would never have been the case anyway.

He's shooting to be out of hospital by Thursday, but that's up to the Docs of course.

Sorry to hear about yet another crash on the forum. It is bad enough when it's someone I only know through the ether, but it sucks even worse when it's someone I've met face to face.

** 'nother update **

Just got the following e-mail from Loren (last chance)

Quote

Roger,

I rode up to Sutter/Roseville (man what a huge facility) and eventually found Mike in the neurological trauma unit, bed 14. I only stayed about 15 minutes or so. He was on heavy doses of muscle relaxants and drifting in and out of a waking state. He said he had a "brain bruise" and it was a serious matter. I think that is an understatement! I asked hem if he had any swelling of the brain, etc. and he said no, the blood clot was stable. His memory, short and long, is good and he appears to have no obvious effects from the brain trauma. I assume if all goes well he will recover fully. I can only guess at the number of possible "complications" from such an injury. I've some first aid training and "observed" first hand the effects of a brain bruise, although much more serious than Mike's at the onset. Mike was fortunate to have the aid and quick treatment because of the quick thinking and actions of those with him and those coming to his aid.

The quality of care and Mike's strength will, I'm sure, prevail. Like you and everyone else, I am saying a prayer for him.

The thing that really bothers me is his new Cycleport gear was cut up. I, for one, would like to contribute to a "new gear" fund for Mike. I worry however that it might "piss" him off if we did something like that. Since he is such a big man, I'm way to much of a coward to propose to him such a project. I am, however, perfectly willing to let his truly long term friends develop such a project and therefore will leave it up to you and his close friends to do so if appropriate. Brave of me, huh?

Well, I've decided to let those closer to Mike and more knowledgeable to "inform" the forum as to Mike's condition (that's you!). But you can pass along my observations as yours if you like.

Thanks for keeping me informed.

God bless Mike and keep him safe.

I replied to loren that Cycleport might want to see Mike's gear, and a possible free repair could be forthcoming after the gear is used as a testimonial ?? I'm not sure about this but will let Mike decide. Sound reasonable Guys??

I think that Wayne at Cycleport would sure be willing to help out. I'll give him a call and check to see if he has advice regarding the repair idea.

What you describe sounds like either a subdural or epidural hematoma. (Terminology depends on which side of the dura, protecting the brain. the blood clot is).

There are three things that a hematoma (blood clot) can do; get smaller, stay the same, or get bigger. The first is ideal. The latter is why MM2 is being held in a neuro ICU. If the bleeding extends, then it will cause brain swelling, necessitating immediate surgery. However, each passing day lessens the likelihood of this happening.

In an ICU environment, the nursing and medical staff will be watching our friend very closely. Subtle changes in mentation, and vital signs are a tip off that it's time for another CT scan. In seconds, the scanner will give a clear picture of what is going on inside.

I've seen countless numbers of kids in the ICU with these types of blood clots. 99% of them go home in good shape, very quickly (depending on other injuries, of course). The other 1% go to surgery, get fixed up then spend a few more days in the hospital before going home in good shape.

It is my considered opinion that Mike is in the right place, being well taken care of, and will be back on the forum very soon. I'm sending good vibes, thoughts and prayers for that to be the case.

A couple things. First, big kudos to the Placer County Sheriff's Department and the EMTs that showed up -- quickly and apparently accurately assessing Mike's condition and the dangers posed. The first deputy arrived on the scene a moment or so before Steve and I did.

For that, let's thank the motorist going the other direction who saw the downed bike and Mike's legs up in the air next to the guardrail (what the guy said) seconds after the accident occurred. He said he had seen me and Steve go by, and then saw the bike and didn't realize at first it was a downed rider. He was waving down traffic when we arrived after he'd called 911, and the deputy was pulling up on the other side. The EMTs took good care of Mike and got him that helicopter ride to the hospital in just about as short a time as was possible.

Since I lived closest, I left to get my car to come back for Mike's stuff a minute or so after they loaded Mike into the ambulance for the ride to wherever the helicopter was to meet them. Steve took care of most everything else on the scene while I rode down and drove back. We were going to have the bike towed to my place in Auburn, but I was on the road back to the scene when I talked to Steve and the tow company was there -- they told him where they were going to take it. He then inquired about taking it to my place in Auburn, but they quoted him a pretty stiff hourly rate for that, so it went to the tow yard. Kudos to Andrew (who is rapidly becoming THE go to NorCal accident, salvage and rehab volunteer) for picking it up the next day (Sunday) to cut off the storage fees.

I really like the idea of getting that jacket fixed for him. It's in my garage right now, and I'll check it again when I get home, but from my initial inspection, I'm pretty sure they only cut one panel, and maybe some trim. Shouldn't be too much trouble to get it back to Cycleport to replace that panel and put it back together in nearly brand new condition. (It WILL require washing to get the dirt out of it, but otherwise, I think it's definitely do-able.)

EDIT TO ADD: Well, the pants are undamaged. But the jacket is a bit more cut up. Takes a minute to see what I'm looking at, but the EMT's scissors did a bit more damage than I thought. Still, there are parts of the jacket that I'm sure could be used -- back panel, trim, pockets, armor, etc. It's not just one panel, and unfortunately, where I'd thought most of the cuts were in the non-kevlar in between panels, in many cases, the scissors also wandered over into the kevlar. Still think a rebuild would be in order and that sharing the cost would make this work nicely in advance of Mike being ready to use it again. .

Just heard about this and found the thread. Good to hear that MM2 is getting the care he needs and is looking at a positive recovery. Kudos to those that helped with the incident and the recovery of gear, bike, etc.

Mike, you big clumsy bastard, I know you'll be reading this thread soon enough. I'll keep you in my thoughts for a fast recovery, but understand one thing, YOU WERE NOT GIVEN PERMISSION TO CRASH! We have discussed this in detail before. Only after requesting permission, and giving detailed plans as to where, when, how, what bike and what Hospital ER entrance you plan to crash at, would you be allowed to crash.

I would duct tape you to a wheel chair, but I know how you love to wheelie anything, and it would only be moments before you figured out how to wheelie the chair. <sigh> Perhaps we can explain again that whole Inertia X Mass X Throttle = diminishing traction pie chart.

Get well and get back on. (I wonder how long your daughter will let you heal, before she kicks your ass?) Ya big oaf. Stop doing this. You worry the rest of us because we care about you.
