It has been my experience that patients with a chest tube in place are usually kept in the ICU until the tube is pulled. There are some aspects of the care of pts with tubes that are better appreciated with the higher staffing ratio used in an ICU.

Hoping that Scab gets to go to a regular floor very soon. To anyone visiting (or Scab himself, once he is wired), please co-operate with the instructions about the use of an incentive spirometer. (Little plastic thingy that assists with slow, deep breaths). It will hurt like heck to take deep breaths, so the tendency is to breathe very gingerly. Combined with bedrest, that leaves one at risk for pneumonia to set in. The nurse, or respiratory therapist will teach how to splint the broken ribs with a pillow and take several deep breaths every hour or so. It will hurt, but is worth it.

Evidently it didn't take your lung 2 days to seal up. And how many of your 5 broken ribs punctured your lung? And just what did you do about the separated shoulder?
Correct, less than one day. Only one. Had the redheaded nurse kizzit and make awll bettewr.

Where else can you go and find out how to loosen your throttle, wire your farkles and use an incentive spirometer? Just teasing ya Jill!! I know when I was there last night they had him do a breathing treatment to avoid pneumonia. Pretty cool the wide variety of people on this forum. :specool:

Same here - just happend to see it. Man, that is tough.

Hope and pray all turns out well - will be checking back...

Bummer Scab!

Like Silver Penguin said, do the deep breathing no matter how much it hurts. Get on your feet as soon as possible and walk all that crap out of your system.

Wait till they pull all those f&*^in tubes out. YEOUCH!

It will all be a bad dream in a couple of months. BTDT, but I was only 31 at the time.

Prayers and best wishes,

Zoltan/Fred

Scab - Sorry to hear about the crash. I've read a lot of your post and though never met you seem like a great guy. Get well soon!

Yep, but they wouldn't pull the danged tube until they could see it had "suctioned" all the bloody gunk out. That meant I had to participate by getting my torso as vertical as possible. So will Brother Scab.

Great point, Jill. My therapist and the charge nurse sat with me and explained the mechanics and the importance. Being pro-active about your recovery will help speed the recovery. I don't know that you could overdo it but doing the breathing exercises more than once an hour won't hurt (figuratively).

Gunny!

I am a ******* and did not make it over today. I disassembled the bike, broke the no-mar and had a few set backs.

I will fo sho make it over on Wed and chime in later.

Flippin crap! I too, thought this was an old thread when i saw it on the list. dammit!

Scabalicious - Please get better quickly. Do what they tell ya. And get back on a bike as soon as you can!!! Don't let this be the end of it, ok. Like you told your wife last time, your still here. It wasn't your time and u gotta keep on living. So ride again, my friend!!

I was really looking forward to meeting you at WFO. Book a flight and come on out with this money fund Jeff set up. There are plenty of open back seats and someone who is strong in his masculinity will surely offer you a ride so you can get out and see Utah. ;)

Best wishes! Heal quickly!

I'm glad FJRchik made the suggestion. Scab ole man, my GF leaves to return home early Friday morning as the first WFO rides begin. My back seat will be open and the bike packed accordingly. If you can wear an adult medium helmet, then you don't even need to bring a lid. Just pack your new ride gear and hop a flight to Park City. I promise, I swear, we'll ride whatever pace and distance suits you.

Hell, I've currently booked for a room with two double beds because all the king rooms were already taken. Sounds like something that was meant to be.

Scab(bed), go ahead and do the preceding, and I'll toss you my keys when you show up at the hotel. You can even use my helmet and all the electronic gizmo's that hook to it. You might not be too keen on what comes out of the iPod though... :punk:

I'll be busy around the hotel with staff duties, so the Cerulean Land Speeder will be lonely and available, for you, if you decide to make the journey.

Just don't try to keep up with Jeff, OK?
