You know, I've thought about them, but some rumors somewhere are to the effect that they have oil leak issues -- one used one Ive seen in a local dealers clearly supports that reputation. Do they have leaky problems?FiveG: I wanted to add a photo of my Kawasaki KLR 650 to Canadian FJR's picture. If you want a dual sport, for not much money, consider a KLR; you can pick them up for $2.5K easily! This photo was taken in the parking lot of a hotel in Chihuahua, Mexico on the way to Barrancas del Cobre; Mexico's Copper Canyon, my KLR made the descent no problemos!!
Oil burning sometimes. Usually at high sustained highway speeds. Mostly the 2008 model year. Some weep oil at the oil filter cover. Mine never has leaked a drop -- 2009 bike. I haven't read of widespread oil leaks. You know, I've thought about them, but some rumors somewhere are to the effect that they have oil leak issues -- one used one Ive seen in a local dealers clearly supports that reputation. My 2006 KLR never leaked oil or burned oil. It now has 44K miles on it with its 3rd owner RJ Strayer and he reports no oil leaks or oil burning. I'm with SPU, never even heard of a KLR oil leak problem!Oil burning sometimes. Usually at high sustained highway speeds. Mostly the 2008 model year. Some weep oil at the oil filter cover. https://www.cycletrader.com/find/listing/20...lr-650-96888684 FiveG: Do not pay more than $4,600 for a new 2009 KLR, every Kawasaki dealer in Phoenix is selling them for $4.6K. But, give some consideration to a used 2007 and earlier model, they are much better off road than the 2008 and newer. Only wealthy people like ShinyPartsUp can afford the 2008+ ones. Thanks, guys. There's a local Kawa dealership that has a couple of new '09 KLR650s that he lists on his website for less than $5K. May be worth a visit at lunch.
Damn, Don....who the hell want's to go to some damn 3rd world country?Use the two grand saved to ride Mexico's Copper Canyon, Owosso or Alaska!
That's what dual sport bikes are best at. When the roads are really poor, they shine. Long travel suspension, modest weight, big h/bars, tractable power delivery -- all contribute to dual sports excelling in countries/areas where the roads are bad.Damn, Don....who the hell want's to go to some damn 3rd world country?Use the two grand saved to ride Mexico's Copper Canyon, Owosso or Alaska!
Point well taken! FiveG, don't ride to Owosso, MI; like RadioHowie says, strictly 3rd world!Damn, Don....who the hell want's to go to some damn 3rd world country?Use the two grand saved to ride Mexico's Copper Canyon, Owosso or Alaska!
I agree the <2008 KLR model years are a good bargain. They have longer wheel travel and tons of parts around; but the 2009 and 2010 have stronger updated shocks, forks, increased tank size (@6 gallons out of the box) looks nicer (subjective of course), and has better wind protection getting to the dirt. I wouldn't touch a 2008 personally, but the problems were sorted out by 2009. I paid about $4950 for my '09 in July '09. So you should be able to talk them down a bit, I'd think. I wouldn't turn my nose up at a well sorted-out clean "GEN I" model KLR for a decent price savings.https://www.cycletrader.com/find/listing/20...lr-650-96888684 FiveG: Do not pay more than $4,600 for a new 2009 KLR, every Kawasaki dealer in Phoenix is selling them for $4.6K. Above is a link to a cherry KLR, where the seller is asking $3,250, and he no doubt would take $3K for it. Use the two grand saved to ride Mexico's Copper Canyon, Owosso or Alaska!

Burning oil is a different issue than leaking oil. '08's were pretty famous for it. And sustained highway speeds will burn some oil, but after 3000 miles I've had to add a total of 1/2 cup oil after some sustained 70+ over a few hundred miles. YMMV obviously. I only said leaking oil has not been a consistent problem based on KLR650.net or ADVrider threads I have read.Hmmm my 05 burned too much oil and I punted it. Bluesteak's new KLR uses more oil than gas and Kawi refuses to repair it! Buyer beware !
Yep. (ok, technically it's not a dual sport, but does have lights and is a Beta)Anyone riding on a Beta?
Strap a dildo to that thing and Beemerdons would have a grand time riding it.Yep. (ok, technically it's not a dual sport, but does have lights and is a Beta)Anyone riding on a Beta?
