Sick of heat, sick of buffeting behind fairing

Way to think " outside the box ". Keep the pics coming on the progress!

A BikeJohnny stainless radiator grill will clean up the look a bit.

I'm not clear why selling both faired bikes and buying a nekkid or factory-hacked (Monster, Speed Triple, etc.) wouldn't be the better course of action. Seems that you would walk away with cash in your pocket. The plastic on these bikes is probably a 3rd of their cost (check out how often they are totalled just for plastic damage). Why spend the cash and then throw it in a heap in the garage when, for a significant savings, you could get a bike (with warranty) that is like that from the start - AND cheaper to insure?

--update--

Not a dogpile IMO. Just a bunch a people confused and asking the obvious questions.

I personally think it's so the wind flows non-turbulanty through his copilots hair.

Move this thread where?

If this isn't an appropriate forum for this, please just chuck the whole thread in the trash.

We don't have a troll thread.....as of yet. And even if we did I'm not convinced it should belong there anyway. Don't worry. We'll leave it here ;)

Carry on. Just pretend us folks with the clipboards and white jackets aren't here.

Would somebody please pass the popcorn?

Honest this is so much more nimble and accelerates faster.

Spare the poor FJR!!!!

Actually this little bugger is more expensive to insure than a FJR!

Hmmm. Well, I guess the FJR could look OK as a nekkid. As long as you own it for life or make it so all the old parts can bolt on before you sell it, you'll be OK, I guess.

Are you sure you tried all the wind and heat fix stuff already? Just seems like drastic action when there's so many farkles out there to cure what ails ya. One thing that helped me a lot was the highway peg setup. Gave me another positon for my feet and my legs act as air scoops to bring cool air into the area where I be sittin'.

But if yer determined to make a project out of it, find a good boneyard for parts and post lots of pics so we can see how it works out. Can't take any longer than restoring an old Britbike (don't ask).

Put it back together, sell it. Buy a harley v-rod. If that is the look you are going for. Spare yourself the pain and anguish of all the horsies in this forum with blinders on their heads. You should have seen what I did with my harley....lol

Falcon, I for one am interested in how you'll pull this off. Keep the updates coming. JB

Again I have to reiterate some of these responses are hilarious and its been worth it so far just for the humor.

Thanks for all the kind advice about buying another bike, but I don't want another bike.

Just looking at moving the battery under the seat - one thing I hadn't thought of was relocating that mass from front to middle/back would add more weight in the rear...fine, but I hadn't thought of what happens when you move that mass from the right side of the bike to the center. I am sure the enigneers did complete weight distribution analysis to ensure the mass was evenly distributed down the centerline of the tires. I did once have something pretty heavy in one of the saddlebags while the other was empty. I did notice I had to sit slightly canted and I think the bike wasn't riding perfectly vertical to compensate. If I end up with a situation like that, then this is a show stopper unless I can add ballast or something. I *think* the effect will me too small to notice but we will see.

Any thoughts?

Doesn't seem to me like the battery's so heavy that moving it toward center would upset the overall balance. You're only moving a small percentage of the bike's mass.

Good luck with the project!

HEAT, what heat. I live in Lake Havasu City Arizona. I have ridden in 120 plus degrees. The heat at my feet is not an issue. I went out for a ride recently up to about 5000 feet with a short sleeve shirt on "stupid of me" it was cold. I do remember my feet being very comfortable, not hot but comfortable. What is poor Yamaha going to do when 06 owners complain of their feet being to COLD IN THE WINTER time. Maybe add more Weight by installing hair dryers at each foot peg. Wire them to the battery with an inverter to drive the AC power needed. Concerning the redesign of the fairing, battery location ect. I am woundering who might have the better resources at their disposal for design, Yamaha Resource and Development or a dude in his garage with some tools. Are we finding that we might have to much time on our hands. With that extra time I recommend a good long ride!!

Falcon, one of the hottest deals in motorcycling in my opinion is customizing sport bikes. If you check out the web on this it is awesome. The sky's the limit my man, go for it! Be cool and ride safe, PM. <>< :D

But if he removes the fairing, he has to move the battery or it will be hanging our in the wind and most states require it to be covered (protected).
