I am cross posting this from my Ride Report since I am hoping more folks will see this.

The wet slogging has taken a toll on my AE and I'm starting to have a problem. After a while of running in the rain the neutral indicator light will start to glow on the dash. As time passes sometimes it gets brighter and if it reaches full intensity the bike will intermittently develop a rather severe miss in sync with a brightly lit neutral indicator. The problem is definitely moisture related and I am suspecting a problem with either the gear selector switch or the sidestand switch has become waterlogged and is tracking.

I'm going to try spraying down the switches I can get at with WD40 since the WD does stand for water dispersant. The problem is definitely intermittent since at times after hours of riding in the rain the neutral light on the dash will flicker. It was especially bad yesterday in Vancouver during a heavy rain after hours of having the neutral indicator just glowing slightly coming over the Duffy Lake Road and down Hwy 99 from Pemberton without any missing. I have had the neutral light glowing slightly during this last week in BC when in the rain but the missing is a new symptom. I did not have the neutral indicator showing at full intensity intermittently before either so the two symptoms appear to be related.

Spider recall done. Brodie Harness installed. Ignition switch recall done. High Altitude ECU installed. PCIII installed.

Any thoughts other than to buy an antique Gen I??

I replied on your RR thread. I'd be thinking about this being yet another arachnid attack.
I'm not so sure. The recall was done and I have the Brodie Harness installed. I'm still of the opinion its a moisture tracking issue in one of the interlocks.

Mine and Intechs did the same thing at the same time after riding in the rain to the camp out this year. It turned out to be the relay unit in the nose under the head lites. The relay unit has 2 relays (fuel pump, starter cut out), and a few diodes in it that go to the side stand, clutch, gear indicator. After checking things, we both R&R the relay unit and all is good again. Here's a link to our issue.

That was a very interesting read. Now I just have to figure out which relay it is on an 06 AE. Does anyone have the part number (not that I'm going to find a dealer open on Sunday)??

It's the same part number for A and AE. 5VK-81950-30-00

From Bob's description you can reach it from under the front. Probably have to be a contortionist, but that would beat having to pull the entire nose cone off.

In a pinch, you may be able to just dry it off with a hair dryer or such, then wrap it up tightly in a baggie or something like that so it won't get damp again.

You can reach it if you reach up from underneath. It sits on a brkt. at the lowest point of the nose, under the head lites. It is almost sitting on the plastic under the lites. Lowest part of fairing, directly under lites. You can pull it off the brkt, then pull it out to unplug it. There's enough wire to do so.

Mine got dried, cleaned, greased, but still didn't work correct. I think the diodes in it got fubared from moisture or corrosion. Replacing it was the ticket.

Hope it's as simple as the relay Bill. That particular relay is used in many Yamaha products including ATVs, so odds are a larger dealer will have one in stock. I do know there are a couple on the shelf in the Seattle area when Mount Rainier and I were looking around for his.

Let me know if I can do anything for you.

Edit -- If you're stuck in the Seattle area, I'll give you the relay from my '09 to get you on the road again.

Yamafitter is on his way again with a fresh relay and new [used] front tire. No evidence of pin corrosion or moisture in the connector...we'll see if the problem is fixed.

Garmin brought him straight to the house, via the twisty backroad route.

Front PR3 is beyond toast!

A little re-balance and this part is done!

Yamaha changed the relay location on the '09s [maybe '08s too?], took a little bit of digging to locate the bugger. No longer in the nose, now under the tool tray.

Safe travels Bill, looks like the weather is beginning to dry out in the PNWet.

Notice to all My tolerance towards the inferior Gen ll design has worn thin.. Therefore from here on out there will be a $100.00 fee for any of those electron challenged POS attending forthcoming tech days here.

Actually I think Andy should implement some type of bribe I mean cash penalty for those who pilot the labor intensive, motorized Rik sans

As it is written let it be known.

But without the Gen IIs, your post count won't rise nearly as quickly. You'll only have to find something else to vilify

George definitely gets the hero of the month award. Mega kudos to you for getting 'Fitter back on the road.

Odd that they moved that relay back to where you can get at it easier, like it is on a 1st gen. Maybe they are listening?
