Wheatie, I said sooner or later, not really this s o o n !

I think on this site you will get mostly "NAYs'". Maybe on a sportbike (younger) or HD (older) forum you may get the YAY's. I like to think we are in the right :D

No,

No,

Hell No.

I just suffered a 5 day ride with a "loud pipe" group. The only thing that kept me sane was "at least my FJR is not loud, boring, disrespectful and obnoxious"

That and ear plugs under a Schuberth helmet

Since it did make NEPRT...

I am at a loss as to how anyone with enough intelligence to buy an FJR would not know that straight pipes would result in a power loss. Only Harley owners (notice I don't say riders) are ignorant enough to believe that straight pipes increase power on a street motorcycle.

I also have trouble believing that anyone would honestly think that such a ridiculous idea could possibly be well received on this forum. This cannot be for real, he has got to be a troll. I hope he sells that poor FJR (if in fact he does actually own one) and buys another Harley.

No I wasn't going for pain in the kids ears LOUD.
Just what the hell do you think straight pipes would be, then?!!??!?

Perhaps he didn't mean STRAIGHT pipes, but ones with a slight curve that would only make some kids drop their ice cream cone if they were particularly squeamish.

Maybe these.are.not.the.droids.you're.looking.for will also install a turn signal reminder, fix the defective side stand, and sort out unresolved oil dilemmas at the same time. Inquiring minds want to know!

I'd like to see him show up at the FJR Clan Gathering with the straight pipes at the campground in Morro Bay at 11pm and see the friendly reception. That would be a classic video! :D

Some years ago I replaced my stock exhaust system with a Muzzy system. My goal was to reduce the heat that was rising up from the stock exhaust when I stopped at a light, as well as some reduction in weight. The muzzy is made from thinner wall pipes and has one muffler so it is lighter, and it has no cats, so it creates less heat.

I spent the next three seasons modifying the muffler with different cores and different packing material to get things to a reasonable level of noise. It is still loud enough that people who ride without earplugs don't like to ride directly behind me. I can only imagine the sound I would get with no muffler at all.

I've got that same 4-2-1 system with Muzzy's "quiet core" in a Ti can. I haven't had any noise complaints with it in the 6 years it's been on the bike, but have had a couple riders covet it. Since they don't make them anymore, they're in the $900 to $1,000 range on eBay now . . . when you can find one.

I rode Dad's FJR home after he crashed it in '08. He had ripped off the left side muffler and that side was open. Not only was the bike noticably down on power, it sounded terrible. Not just loud, loud and shitty. A more ratty, raggedy sound you could not imagine. Then I had to ride it to the dealership for inspection and repair down one of the busiest thoroughfares in Baton Rouge. It was awful. I did my best to keep the revs down to keep from aggravating those around me and to not draw more attention to myself.

Some of my Harley riding "friends" actually would rather give up some HP to gain the noise. Noise is cool! I am glad I am not part of that crowd.

Why would you want to make a good Friday dogpile go away. We are overdue for one. I did do the Trooper mod to the max extent possible and I wouldn't want to get any louder than what it is. To me it made the bike just right for sound. Some days on my slower rides I do miss the quiet whisper of the stock exhaust. I wouldn't mind hearing an FJR with straight pipes just for the fun of it. Maybe someone can do a center stand test with video with the stock exhaust removed. Then we can base our opinions on facts. We can do a pole.

If we are going to "do a pole" I say we get TopSpeed's thread about the chaps involved and have something exciting to look at while we have our discussion.

Nothing like a good set of chaps and a stage with a pole...

Of course if we are going to actually "conduct a poll", I would say that the results are already in and the results are pretty clear. By all means carry on with the Friday Dogpile. I honestly don't think I ever got to participate in one yet. It is really fun.

While swapping cans on mine, I fired it up to see what it sounded like "open"

I was NOT impressed. It only takes a few minutes to remove the cans and see for yourself ;)

Before you go to all the trouble of installing straight pipes on your FJR I would suggest you rip the sleeves off some of your gear and get a kewl do rag. Ride your stock Fjr around in yer new duds for a few weeks and then see if you still want those straight pipes.

Hey Riona, I think I've got some chaps around here somewhere. Heck, we're practically neighbors!
