I'm up for the pole ... but only if someone buys me some chaps ...
By Golly, I'm in! If the forum can pitch in to get Patriot a new motor what couldn't we do for a really worthy cause like this!

I tried to get my wife a set but they would have had to kill an elephant to get a piece of leather wide enough...

I'm in for Riona's donation! And I'm laughing my ass off about the amount of leather needed for your chaps!! :)))

Damn, missed the whole FDP.

@08FJR4ME - Just because a thread gets sent to the basement (aka NEPRT) doesn't mean the dog pile ends. In fact it opens up the spicy possibilities, if you catch my drift...

@Rionna - I'm not a big fan for leather chaps on ladies, assless or otherwise. Since I'm not a "bad boy wannabe" it doesn't stir me up. But I'll pledge a few bucks towards that pole and maybe a video crew for ya'!

@OP - I've gotta agree with some prior posts. You are either the stupidest FJR owner on the planet, or just a bad troll. Straight pipes on an FJR? Yikes!! Now I've heard everything.

Here in New Brunswick, one of our cities has caused a complete ruckus proposing a new noise bylaw. Lots of bikers up in arms and of course most of them HD riders. I've been amazed at how idiots breed idiots. Very few will recognize that extremely loud pipes do annoy other people. When riders acknowledge that there is a problem, people bash them and question how they could ever make such a comment and still ride a motorcycle.

They have quoted the charter of rights, DOT documentation, other legal documentation, I think probably even some scripture. And of course "Loud Pipes Save Lives". They have even started posting some of the city councilors addresses. Although I don't agree with the noise bylaw, I do agree there is a problem. Some of the HD riders feel loud is cool and to hell with everyone else.

So the idea of making the DJR one big loud annoying bike is generally a bad idea.

However, I also go to the drag strip every now and then. Those stock pipes do weigh a lot. I have considered removing the slip ons, putting on some custom turn downs modified to provide some back pressure. Maybe extremely loud and sound like crap but it's a drag strip and dropping 40-50 lbs would be of benefit and may just look a little cool.

So take away the comments of how loud it would be, would it be feasible to just add a elbow where the slipons normally connect and add a "valve" to adjust the back pressure so that it would run correctly?

The problem with this kind of legislation is that it is generally difficult for LEOs to enforce a law that requires quantification of, and criminalizes noise levels over a certain dB. To make it stand up in court typically requires strict adherence to a test protocol with a measuring instrument, which is often difficult on an already noisy roadway and takes time better spent on other tasks. So, the solution the legislative process is increasingly going to is to simply make all aftermarket exhaust modifications illegal -- much easier to enforce, but true suckage for more considerate motorcyclists who are only seeking to improve performance, reduce weight or save money on replacement components (e.g., due to damage).

Sorry some of you missed the FRIDAY DOG-PILE. T'was kind of a.droid to have provided an opportunity for those of us who are growing rusty at the FJRforum's Friday tradition of dog-piling (due to a lack of appropriate fodder being posted on a Friday).

Now this is exactly the situation that Useless Pickles could provide us with sound facts. Pipes on, Pipes off at the drags. I wonder if he's up for it.

You won't be benefitting from a 40-50 lb weight savings by removing your stock mufflers. More like 16-17 lb. The stock slipons from my '05 weigh 8.5lbs apiece.

I know I'm late to the party, but I say DO IT. Hell, its your bike, and its a free country. Be as loud as you can stand.

This bike makes enough power that you won't miss whatever is "lost." FWIW, that power isn't actually lost, its just moved up in the rev range, which gives you more reasons to run that bastard in the 8k range.

Seriously...Do it. Then run it full throttle past Bugnater's house at 0300.

Finally the voice of reason.

Just don't come visit me at 03.00 with those pipes on.

Best regards

Speaking of loud pipes and pissing people off, I live in a gated community...have for 8 years now. I ride a bike to work every day of the week, either my Kaw or my FJR and have done so for 99.9% of every moment I've lived here. Both typically quiet Jap bikes.

There are only two other bike owners in my small community. Both are "Loud Pipes" guys, and they are really, REALLY loud. Obnoxiously so...painfully so...makes you wanna "Kill Them" loud.

Well, back in March, during the annual "Homeowner's Association" meeting, they (the association) decided everyone was fed-up with the two noisy asshats who live within a couple of blocks of me and the association voted to ban motorcycles from the community.

I am NOT an active member of the association. Wouldn't give them a moment of my time if my life depended on it, by the way, but come home one day and my gate code didn't work. Not too big a deal, wait for another vehicle to come to either enter or exit, and drive through the open gate. Next day...same thing happens...wait for an opening and drive through. Third day...same thing. Figured the code panel was effed up so ignored it.

Fourth day, I come through with another vehicle and as I'm getting off my bike, taking my gear off and putting the FJR away in the garage, the president of the association walks her fat ass up the driveway to ask me "what the hell I'm doing?"

Taken aback just a little, and knowing she doesn't know me at all, much less very well, I didn't bother to rip her fucking head off because of the "what the hell I'm doing" comment. I asked her what she meant? She said "what the hell do you think you're doing riding a motorcycle here in the community?" Now I'm starting to get a little pissed and "the Howie in me" starts to come out. I asked her "what the hell is SHE doing asking me what the hell I'M doing?" She replies "Don't you know WE (obviously, the "Royal" we) have banned motorcycles from the community because of the noise?" I told her she and her little pack of fart-sniffers had better get themselves a VERY good lawyer, because right there, without hesitation, I informed her the lawsuit against the "Homeowner's Association" was going to cost them exactly what my house cost me, $365,000, plus another $100,000 for the hell of it.

She blustered and spit and fumed and stomped off.

The next day, there's a letter in my mailbox from the association, outlining the "new" guidelines for residency, which includes the new by-law banning motorcycles.

I take the letter to work with me the following Monday, as we have a lawyer who does a talk show on one of our stations that day. I explain what happened to him, and my response. He proceeds to ask me 3 questions -- "How long have you lived there?" he asks...8 years I tell him. "Was this by-law in the association charter when you purchased your home?" Nope, it's been added only because of 2 of the noisy mutherfuckers riding "Milwaukee Iron"" I tell him. "Was there a cancelled stamp on the envelope in your mailbox" he queries? Nope. "Let me send them a letter before we proceed with this any further" he concludes.

Wednesday, when I get home, MissusHowie asks me why I got a letter from a lawyer, and why doesn't our gate code work any more. I bring her up-to-date and SHE IS PISSED!!!

But the funniest part is yet to come...the lawyer, who I haven't paid a single dime...has responded to the association thusly:

He is threatening to sue the association for $730,000, double the cost of my home...adding in "appreciation", another $500,000 for punitive damages and mental anguish...AND turning the association president and members of the board in the to FBI, Treasury Department, Secret Service and Justice Department for illegal and improper use of the U.S. Mail, for using my mailbox by placing an un-stamped letter in it. I could have laughed my ass off, but I was still pissed at the whole situation.

The next morning, my gate code worked. 2 days later, I received a letter, WITH A STAMP ON IT, stating that I had been "grandfathered-in" under the previous by-laws which didn't include a motorcycle restriction. Additionally, the association would be "happy to" pay the attorney's fee of $1500 to "put an end to this unfortunate misunderstanding" in their words.

I immediately went outside, fired up my FJR, which is quieter than a dead Prius, by the way, and promptly drove around the neighborhood 4 times.

The whole point of this sordid tale? I guess I'm with FJRay who stated

Why label yourself as an ass along with the rest of the loud pipes crowd. We have enough trouble holding on to a decent image with the public as it is. JMHO
Perhaps a better point would be when someone tries fucking with you, don't get mad.....get even, talk to a lawyer first.

Oh, a third point -- making $1500 by writing a letter is a pretty good day's work.

Great story, RadioHowie.

Before you revealed the outcome I was thinking; "They can't change the.terms of a prior signed agreement with him."

Instead of attempting to (illegally) ban all motorcycles in the community, why don't they just contact the loud pipe asswads and inform them that only legal vehicles are allowed on the association property. I'm sure that Florida has a (generally unenforced) law on the books about exhaust noise levels. I know that even "Live Free or Die" New Hampshire does. If the don't comply, then swear out a complaint and call in the cops.

As for the $1500... they got off cheap, IMO.

Howie,

Are you still on your Homeowners Association's Christmas Card list??

As your example proves, sometimes being stupid can be expensive.

Another example of our overly litigeous society. Without the direct line to lawyers your house would be less expensive and people would talk to each other instead of feuding.

Just ask those Hatfield boys.

RadioHowie, the question that comes to mind after reading your missive is this: what is the status of the two Hardlys in your hood? I'm not sticking up for them, nor suggesting you should care, but the HOA outlawing them, in the same manner they used with you, also won't hold up. Our HOA restrictions can't be amended without a vote of 85% or more of the residents, (85% voting, not 85% in favor of the change), and with 3500 homes and the usual levels of apathy, that means they'll never be changed. Just wondering how your HOA thinks they can do what they did to you, to anyone, right or wrong?

I really don't know. Y'see, I really AM the grumpy, crusty old bastard many of you think I am. I don't wave to other bikers (what a loser habit!) I don't talk to strangers, and I think children should be considered a protein source and nothing else. I don't talk to my neighbors and I especially don't confer with noisy asshats.

Because they are typical HOA ass-sniffers, trying to decide THEY know what's better for us than WE do. Remember what Hillary said during the 2007 presidential campaign..."It takes a village..." well these monkeyjackers think THEY'RE the village. And take a look at my community....it's VERY small:

oe_zpsad74df07.jpg

There are only 75 homes in the entire association, so that assumes a maximum voting membership of 75? (one vote per household??) so a majority would be 38 votes, if everyone in the community showed up at the annual meeting. MissusHowie and I showed up to one meeting when we first moved in back in '05, but there were maybe only 20 people there, so maybe a majority is calculated from attendees. Beats the shit outta me and I couldn't really care less.

The thing that makes me shake my head in wonder is "what does the HOA actually do?" Basically they DO two things that I see....

1 - Paint the sleeping policemen yellow, and

2 - Keep the electric entryway working.

That's what my $500 annual fee gets me??? What an assrape. grrrrrrrrrrrr

Well, our HOA actually does quite a bit, and I wouldn't want their (non-paid) jobs for a second. They have to deal with the lazy/ignorant/did I mention lazy? homeowners that don't want to keep their properties up. As we have quite a few homeowners that weren't born in this country, and some that evidently never were taught to not be a burden to others, compliance to simple things like "mow your damn grass" is sketchy at best.
