**** Wayne. I'm really glad you're ok. Thank God for good luck and good gear. Oh...And the few good drivers that are still out there. Things like this make me glad that I don't have to commute on my bike.

Even here, the level of driving skill seems to have deceased dramatically in the last 10 years. I work graveyards, so I am usually off by 0700. But on the days where I have to be somewhere at 0800, I dread the drive. We can't go one day around here without some ******* crashing into something, and when the freeways are open, most of Albuquerque is within a 15 minute drive.

People are very self centered and seem to have this new belief that they can do anything they want...without repercussions.

Stay safe and maybe just ride the bike for fun stuff. It may extend your life in the long run. I'm sorry you crashed, but I'm glad you're ok.

Very glad you suffered nothing major...bike loss..pending.

Being new in the East and driving those curvy on ramps they love seems fun.

I cage out east, most times I think this would be cool on my FJR.

The merging can get tricky just as you described, and it's traffic all day long.

However, Texting, cell talk, coupled with the other dozen distractions just don't leave

much room for error. We just have to be careful at all times.

Speedy recovery and good favor with the adjuster.

Now that hurts; guess I had it coming. The reality of just how fortunate I am to be here today has really hit hard the past few days. I go from not wanting to stuff crap in the garbage can to finding myself standing in a garage looking at that '09 for sale here locally.

This is going to be a tough call. I don't see me commuting anymore. Still waiting on the call from the insurance, so I've got some time to think on it more.

Mental and emotional injuries are as tough as the physical; sometimes tougher since they're harder to identify, treat, and rehab. Take some time, enjoy the blessings you have. There will always be bikes for sale.

The photos were rather dramatic, man. Glad your tough Jarhead hide is relatively undamaged.

 
Best of luck with insurance. This may or may not be helpful. I just received check for accident reported on 10-16. Retail value on 2004 minus deductible plus tax. Same for a friend and his 2004 totaled in August.

I'd be interested to hear how you come out on the 09 model, since I'm gathering facts for a replacement.

Sounds like you had considerable costs in add-ons. I can see why you'd want to buy the Bike back.

Uffda, what a story. Heal fast and well, going down is never fun but I'd say you did well all things considered. Any deer on your commute?

Fall is a good time to buy a slightly used bike. Best to you Wayne!

 
Ok, decision time. I just got off the phone with the adjuster. Allstate is going to total the bike. Insurance value is $10,843.00, I have a $1000 deductible, so my check to walk away is $9843. I can purchase the bike for salvage for $2600. That would be deducted from the settlement check, dropping it to $7243.00.

Parts on the bike that I need to pull off that I know are good at this point are the Ohlins YA707, PC-V, Sargent Seat, Vstream milled bar ends, Helibar top clamp, Heat troller for heated gear, bluesea box, Techmount GPS mount, admore plug’n’play light kit harness, audiovox cruise and probably somethings I’m not thinking of right now.

Replacement cost of the Ohlins is $1000. I can not see letting that go to a scrap yard.

I’ll total the other stuff up tonight, but what my question is for those who have parted out a bike before, how well have you come out? I believe the motor is solid; it started and was put on the flatbed under power. I’m not sure if the rear end / swing arm is tweaked or not – I’ll need to check it and check the estimate as well. The gas tank is undamaged. Gauge cluster and I’m sure other parts as well. I've got the space and time (winter) to part it out.

Opinions, thoughts, suggestions?

Wayne, first off I want to add my voice to those saying we are glad you came out physically OK. And I personally am happy to hear that you are planning to give up commuting on the bike. Good move, IMO.

As for this settlement deal, if you have the time to defarkle the bike and then part it out, then by all means do that. You will definitely come out way ahead monetarily. You will also be able to sell off the engine and recoup a good chuck of the salvage cost. Lots of other little parts can be sold off that way too. Just the ABS hydraulic block is worth a couple hundred. Not sure how some of the other stuff fared (like wheels, brakes etc.) but you should definitely come out ahead.

Good luck in your search for another Feej. They say third try is the charm! ;)

 
Do Andy a favor an grab his Codpiece from under the seat. He forgot all about it in his drunkin stupor 3 weeks ago...

Make sure you wear toss away gloves. :)

 
Will they let you take your farkles and put the bike back to stock before they take title to it? That assumes you have the stock shock or something to put in place of the Ohlins.

 
I tried that - I asked if I could have the bike for 2-3 days to remove add ons; the adjuster shot that down; he said it either goes to salvage or to me from the dealership. If I'd of been a little quicker, I would have called the shop and asked them if they would change out the Ohlins, and if I could pull some items off it (PC-V, etc.).

Will they let you take your farkles and put the bike back to stock before they take title to it? That assumes you have the stock shock or something to put in place of the Ohlins.
 
Update - So Vader is home. If there was ever any doubt, Yamaha produces a solid piece of equipment - Vader fired and was rode into the garage. There was definitely some attitude and raspiness since one exhaust can is missing.

I will start pulling broken parts off this weekend, then start building a list of good parts. If no one buys the motor, I'm thinking I will have the basis for one heck of a go-kart...
