thought the OP said the paint rubbed off on the inside of the pipe.

Did on mine, but I did such a fugly job grinding the tip off my exhaust pipe up inside there, anybody looking inside isn't going to be paying much attention to the white paint. Figger it'll fall off eventually. Like the iron filings the dremel left behind.

Actually considered getting a set of tail cones to cover it all up, but that's not in keeping with my dirty old '05. It'd probly reject 'em.

Seriously, though, I LIKE the new sound. I haven't heard anybody use this word, but the very best description of the sound is the word that popped into my head the first time I started it up, post surgery. My bike snarls now.

I had some minor/ paint transfer to the inside edge of the muffler can. But, I promise that it was very little and the cut off wheels made it look good as new, probably better. The amount of work to take off the paint from the hole-saw is much more of a hassle than taking some sand paper and basically buffing the inside edge of the can. Trust me I wouldn't lead you astray...even without the paint, you would probably scratch the edge and want to buff it out with sand paper or wheels anyway. Just trying to save you some work. Bet you can't wait to hear that wonderful motor. It's amazing.

Take care,

Trooper

Sacramentomike- one edge up inside the baffle was a little off on mine, so I just used the cut off wheel to even it out, kinda like a sanding wheel. couldn't tell it wasn't perfect from the start.

Trooper-

This is a joke right?

I mean if you're so anal as to worry about paint residue? Good feckin gawd!

I bet you sissy's wash yer bike too don't ya.... :(

WTF!

Oh, don't worry bout me, I made it look perfect...I can't wait for the tail-cones though. Thank you so much, it will make it even better. Awesome!

Ok I know I'm the new guy here but here's my opinion (not good) on the mod, and, I did a little mileage test before and after I did it...

My opinion only.. It sounds good at cruising speeds, not so good under acceleration and absolutely terrible at idle and/or revving in neutral. The normal backfire that it had is so loud now it's embarrassing and makes the bike sound cheap, in my opinion. On the other hand, I jimmy-rigged 2" tail pipes and pushed them just inside the edge of the pipe and it sounded MUCH better, problem is I cant leave them in, just wanted to see what it sounded like. The tail cones that have been discussed on here would be a for sure thing to make it sound better, in my opinion.

Ok now for some maybe useful info... I reset the MPG, warmed up the bike and did a nice, easy 75 mile round trip (5 miles city/70 hwy 75mph) and got 47.4 MPG. I came home, did the mod in about 15 mins and hit the road again. The exact same trip and ended up with 48.8 MPG. I realize 75 miles is a short trip and is not an exact science but it's something to think about!

Also, earlier i read about the backfire being worse because of less backpressure. I dont think it's worse, just louder! I think the only way to get rid of backfire on decel is to lose the air injection system. The backfire is caused from O2 being mixed in with the very hot and very lean exhaust and causing small explosions in the pipes.

Hate to hear that you don't like it. I guess it is not for everyone. Hope that you can pick up some oems for cheap somewhere. Oh you might be able to trade someone for theirs if they like the mod. I know most that have done it would have traded. Not trying to be smart, just giving an idea.-Trooper.

So 8buck,

Today I received muffler tail cones and along with the air induction removal it seems that it doesn't pop as much, and it sounds a little bit deeper of tone. I don't know if this is something that you would like or anything but I thought that it would be worth a try. I really like the sound even better with the tail cones. Still a lot cheaper than 800 for aftermarket pipes. Good luck in finding something that works for you.

That being said, the tail cones that Gary provided are the best! I think that it makes the exhaust perfect. That with the louder exhaust it is exactly what I am looking for. The craftmanship of the tailcones is second to none. If anyone is looking to set off your bike, tailcones are the perfect option. Even if you don't have the trooper mod.

Thanks gary,

Trooper

Possible issue with this mod?

The ends of my exhaust are discoloring. I am PRETTY SURE they were not like this before. Not positive. Though I can't believe I would not have noticed it. But there is that slight chance. But I do think it has something to do with the mod.

Take a look. Browning and a little blueing of the ends of the exhaust:

Anybody else experiencing anything like this? I guess the Garauld tail cones are even more applicable now as they will cover the discoloration.

I have not tried anything to remove the discoloration. Maybe something will. But I shouldn't have to. I am too lazy for stuff like that. This is my 62k daily driver and I don't really care if she is all that *perfectly* pretty. I have a 4344 mile garage queen for that. Still, I know for others around here this would be an issue.

Thinking that this is just discoloring similar to if you would run your finger around the inside of the pipe on an un-modified pipe. The temp back there shouldn't be enough to discolor them from heat, otherwise the cans themselves would be turning color like they do ahead of the mufflers. The Trooper mod eliminates part of the pipe that comes out the center of the muffler, and allows the exhaust to hit the inside of the backside of the mufflers, and comes out the small holes. I have had the tailcones on for about 15,000 miles, and they look like new!!

Yep, it is raw exhaust and carbon buildup, maybe just a little discoloration. Kinda like if a diesel exhaust pipe is cut a little under the bumper, it will deposit carbon and some discoloration.(that's an extreme example though) fjr won't be that bad. Get a little Chrome polish and most of it will go away. Or you can do what I did and put the muffler tailcones on it like I did from Gerauld and make it sound even better and look awesome. I call them afterburners.

Hello, I am Trooper, I am a loudsider, and I have afterburners....

So I did the Trooper mod. Great instructions, one of the easiest, quickest mods I've ever done.

I like it but don't love it. I actually love the popping on decel, but it's the rest of the package that I don't like so much.

If anyone is contemplating doing this, and your pipes are PRISTINE (mine are scratchless with 5K on them), I'll do a swap with you and save you the cost of the tools and the time to do the mod. If you're within 200 miles of 02904, and you're willin', I'll meet up with ya halfway and we can wait until the pipes cool down and I'll do the swap right there in the parking lot of wherever. And I'll even buy you lunch while we wait for them to cool down. Such a deal!

The only caveat is that if we agree to do this, you commit to it. If you don't love the sound when I pull in to the meet-up spot, you're still committed. That's fair, right?

Get in touch if you're interested. My schedule is pretty flexible.

I gotta wonder what you're going to do when the hair on your magina turns gray..

**** man.. The caked on mud on my pipes turned **** brown.. Maybe I should wash it again? It's been two years ya know..

Reading all this, I'm more pleased than ever with my 4 year old Muzzy 4-2-1 with quiet core.* The weight savings is substantial, there's a noticeable power increase, AND it sounds great, especially under hard acceleration when it sounds like an F-1 car.** :p :p

* Having finally solved the collector scraping issue last summer with GP Suspension's rebuild of my Wilbers that included respringing it with an 800 pounder.

** Yeah, yeah, yeah -- it cost more than this mod, too. ;) But I still have my stockers pristine in a closet in the garage.
