Did the mod a while back and am still happy with it -- BUT -- and it's no big thing -- I do get a hiccup (like the bike is going to cut out, then changes it's mind, all in a half second time frame), only in 2nd gear, and only on rapid acceleration. It's not a "sound" thing like "decel popping" but a break in acceleration. Seems to happen aroung the 6k mark. Surprised me at first but now I expect it, so, no problem.

Anyone have a technical explanation?

I don't see how your problem can have anything to do with the Trooper Mod.

OK, did the Trooper mod this morning, and am VERY pleased! :yahoo: I was afraid that they would be too loud, but that is not the case at all. The procedure was an absolute no brainer. The only thing I might warn against, is to be careful with the hole saw in the pipe. After I got through the first pipe baffle, I kinda wiggled the drill around to make sure I had cut all the way through. Apparently, this also broke about half the teeth off the hole saw, but I still had enough to get through the second pipe baffle! :victory:

I did a video of before and after, and with and without the tailcones installed. Now we have at least a relative comparison of the before and after Trooper mod in the same conditions. I think the tailcones dampen a bit of "flutter" sound that I think is from the exhaust creating turbulance around the small exhaust holes. Hope this works!!

I don't like the tweety bird thing that happens when you shut it off at the end. It ruined it for me. Not manly at all.

Not a problem Greg. Just that it was the first thing I noticed different on the morning ride after I did the mod.

Missing a beat at idle ............:
............only in 2nd gear with rapid acceleration, around 6k revs.

And .... Hi George :)
I have an issue with 2nd gear at anything but a low to a slow climb on the revs. Mine is a bent shift fork, luckily I got Y.E.S and dealer said bring it back at the end of this month, but going to do this mod first and get a few more days before I turn my bike to the dealer for a week.

Ok Mr. Trooper the mod is done....wow......no more lawn mower........just got it done and idle tested only. I must be a klutz as it only took me about 25 cut off wheels to get mine done.......LOL......clearly I did not graduate from Dremel U. Will now go and get purely street rat crazy on the super slab of Kaleefornia and see if this thing skrieks like a banshee or not......

Update and glowing testimonial....best $20 and a couple hours you can spend on the FJR. I think everybodies fear on this deal is that you're committed and you don't want the thing to sound like a John Deere with no muffler. This is no problem at all, the neighbors won't be able to hear it unless they're right next to it, and the PD will never know it isn't stock. Just a nice burble at stoplights, to let the unwashed know you have some power. A nice snarl in 2nd.........and once at cruise on the slab basically no difference. Whoever said this is what the FJR should have sounded like off the showroom floor hit it right on. My only disappointment is I'm not getting ANY deceleration pop and I kinda wanted some o that........LOL........ I'll never go back.....and I'm not gonna be worried if I ever sell this (which I doubt I ever will)......the mod sounds great.

That's great, I'm glad you like it, I still love it too. Really can't see why people would not absolutely love it. But, you know different strokes and all.

I was lookin' in my tailpipes today and I can see another baffle directly in front of the exhaust tube, about 12" inside the can. Has anybody tried drilling (or punching) a hole in that baffle? Seems like it would be even less work than the trooper mod.

The Trooper mod enlarges the first baffle you see from the exit side of the can. The one that's probably less than an inch inside the can. The next one farther back would take a very deep hole saw.

Sounds like the typical "popping out of gear" problem suffered by some FJRs. Limber up your wallet!

I did the Trooper mod a few weeks ago, and was not entirely happy with the result. The sound was a little raspy IMHO and I didn't like the pop on deceleration (which in my case, unlike some others, was extensive). So I contacted Gary and ordered a set of his tail cones. They arrived yesterday, and I installed them this morning. They're beautiful, and add a nice finishing touch to the mufflers (I chose the silver cones, which appear to be a near-perfect match to the silver of the FJR wheels). I didn't have time to take a ride this morning, but based on starting and revving the bike in the driveway, the sound is definitely more mellow, and the popping appears to be gone. I hope that turns out to be true when I get to ride, and will post again if it's not, or if I need to amend the above. Right now I'm a very happy camper.

It will be, the tailcones make a big difference....quite mellow, less burbly, and looks good too.
