Trooper modification

After reading this post, I got all excited and thought that this is just what I needed to do to MY bike too. The reports are positive and the sound clips sound great! But 61 years of life have taught me that reality is not always what it seemed originaly and sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone. I didn't really mind the sound of the stock bike, but I still have enough hot-rodder left in me that I fell into the "more-is-better" mode. I was all pumped up and just HAD to do it. Fortunately, I had the foresight to locate a nice, used pair of muffs and modified THEM, instead of my pristine oriiginals. Well...after about 150 miles, I'd had enough. They weren't irritating, I just like the OE sound better. My age may have something to do with it. So here's your big chance! You can buy the modded mufflers for $200 plus shipping and I'll include a pair the satin black Guarald's tail cones for another $60.00.

The muffs are off an '07 and have some very lite scuff marks from being on a shelf. Being stainless steel, the scuffs can be polished out. No dents or heavy scratches. No "surgery marks". They're nice...just not brand new.

Just completed this mod and wish I had done it sooner! Sounds like a MOTORcycle now instead of a vacuum cleaner. I had a very difficult time with hole sawing through the first baffle. Like someone mentioned earlier in this thread, the welds at the baffle on my bike were thick and round which pretty much rendered the hole saw useless. I had to trim the pipe down to the baffle and then use the hole saw. I went through 5 reinforced cutting wheels (ground down on cement to fit) and about 25 regular cut off wheels with my dremel. I found that three regular dremel wheels sandwhiched together, were about as strong as a reinforced cut-of wheel. I took the mod one step further and purchased a 12" hole saw extension and a 1" hole saw so I could cut through the first baffle deep in the exhaust. Makes the exhaust sound deep and throaty--equivalent to a set of slip-ons I'd say. This mod saved me about $500 as I was about to pull the trigger on some two bros slip-ons when I came across this thread.

Did you try the sound with only that first baffle cut out? Is the second baffle cut out different? Better? Louder? Deeper??? Now I want to know...

Did you try the sound with only that first baffle cut out? Is the second baffle cut out different? Better? Louder? Deeper??? Now I want to know...

I did a 10 mile loop with the standard Trooper mod. I loved the added sound and how I could actually hear the exhaust when I blipped the throttle for a downshift. I still wanted a little more though so I took the 1" hole saw to the baffle deep in the exhaust. It is definitely louder and a little deeper with the extra baffle cut--a little more raspy too but not enough to bother me. Cutting through the second baffle was extremely easy--just make sure the hole saw is securely fastened to the extension as it is a PITA if it falls off inside the exhaust.

I donno...I'm kind of a pussy about this stuff. I didn't do the first one till I talked to Bust and he assured me it would be ok.

Not sure if I want it more "raspy" as I'm pretty happy with the sound as it is. Still have the "If I do this, there's no going back" jitters. Maybe I'll just leave it alone.

I did the Trooper mod a few weeks ago, and was not entirely happy with the result. The sound was a little raspy IMHO and I didn't like the pop on deceleration (which in my case, unlike some others, was extensive). So I contacted Gary and ordered a set of his tail cones. They arrived yesterday, and I installed them this morning. They're beautiful, and add a nice finishing touch to the mufflers (I chose the silver cones, which appear to be a near-perfect match to the silver of the FJR wheels). I didn't have time to take a ride this morning, but based on starting and revving the bike in the driveway, the sound is definitely more mellow, and the popping appears to be gone. I hope that turns out to be true when I get to ride, and will post again if it's not, or if I need to amend the above. Right now I'm a very happy camper.

+1 I liked the mod better with Garauld's tail cones installed, the popping went away!

OK, first of all, AJ, you can always buy a set of stock mufflers from somebody who went for a pair of eight or nine hundred dollar after-market ones, iffn you really MUST. Hasn't anybody down your way done this mod yet? I know you heard mine, but the poor old girl wasn't really at her best just then.

Second, agreeing with 415mc a few posts back, it was a pretty good PITA both to hole-saw the baffle and to Dremel the pipe itself. Got it done, though, and liked the sound. But afterwards, I got thinking, what if you just took a drill and made a few holes in the baffles just outside of the circumference of the inner pipe itself? You could fire the bike up after every new hole was completed, and add more holes (or enlarge the holes you made) till it sounds right for you. Seems like that would end up giving you the same effect without burning through two or three hole saw bits (like I did) and a couple of cut-off wheels too. You could always still do the original Trooper mod if you didn't like the result, couldn't you? I'd like to see somebody try it this way and let the forum know.

On a related note, I just got the bike back from the shop last week after a very major service visit, as some of you may have seen. When I went to pick it up, Zac (at Roseville Yamaha, lots of you know him) told me when they fired it up after putting the engine back in (from the machine shop), he heard it and thought "WTF?" Scared him that something horrible had happened to the engine. I assured him I wanted it to sound like that. :lol:
