as a determinant (without other issues -- failed component) for determining change intervals for both oil and filter due to increases in insolubles (dirty oil).
Where do you get that from? According to the GM source, it is depletion of the anti-wear additives (Zinc) that most often is the determining factor in the useful life in an oil.
That may be true for modern GM engines that have on-board oil analysis and, up-to, 25K mile oil-change intervals?

For most/others, the motor oil just can't be kept clean enough to get to the point of detrimental additive depletion.

Also, modern automotive engines (with more roller/friction-less components) are requiring less (to no), cat-con poisoning, anti-wear additives (Zinc).

I have no doubt OA is a useful tool and huge benefit for fleets. I still think it is silly for an FJR, or ever personal car.
The quest for knowledge often appears silly... :(

I'm still not sure where you get your info. GM vehicles do not have 'on-board analysis'. I don't know of any vehicles that do? They are just an algorhythm that calculates oil life based on time, temp, engine speed, and a bunch of other factors.

And the reason for more extended manufacturer drain intervals is because of the anti-friction reasons you state. That doesn't mean the engines don't need anti-wear additives in the oil, it just means it lasts longer. I am just regurgitating the things I learned from a really smart GM engineer who was involved in the development of their oil life monitors. He said in MOST cases with typical personal transportation, the depletion of anti-wear additives is what limits the oils life. And they found that out through validation testing with hundreds of engines on dynos and oil analysis.

Where are you getting your info from?

Yes, that simulates oil use/conditions -- and, they used oil analysis to achieve those algorithms.

BMW autos and M-Bs have even more sophisticated/complex on-board oil analysis (OK, they're not really analyzing...) equipment.

Antiwear additives are commonly needed where rubbing/sliding, high-pressure forces exist -- these have virtually been eliminated in modern American car engines. In order to rid the motor oils of the need for those. A side benefit has been increased fuel economy -- also Govt. mandated.

I have no doubt that he's really smart -- and that that's his opinion.

Where are you getting your info from?
Similar places to where you're garnering your info...

How personal do you want to get... :(

...Am I just supposed to believe everything you tell me?
Yes, if you expect me to believe you...

And, please keep the conversation objective and on-topic -- above personal attacks... :(
What personal attack?!?!?! There was no personal attack. What is wrong with you?

If I had called you an *******, well, then I guess that might be considered a personal attack.

I will say it sure is difficult to have any kind of meaningful discussion with you.

Not if we keep on-topic...

What's with all the bullying...? :(

Keep it going for one more day and then we can have some Friday fun :yahoo:

I have tried to get engines to run without oil but just as I get them trained bad **** happens so my conclusion is that engines need oil. :) As far as what kind of oil I like Chevron Delo 400 but after 40+ years of wrenching for dollars I have yet to see an engine die if it had the right type of oil for the application.

Oil arguments are almost as much fun as anchor arguments with boaters and it seems that a lot of the folks that pontificate the most have the least knowledge. Just an obsevation and not to bully those involved here. :p

I once tried the same theory with horses but my wife said they wouldn't last without hay.

And so goes why oil discussions end up in the gutter here in NEPRT.

The moral to this thread is, everyone has their own opinion and biases. And we get passionate about them. IMHO as long as the motors getting lubed with any bloody oil that meets or exceeds (or maybe even comes close) the spec, youre golden.

Its like bloody coffee. Its all coffee beans form a few areas, they roast to taste different. No other things happen its all marketing. Even if scantily clad virgins pick the beans its still a bloody coffee bean (did I just say that out loud?).

As far as believing people, I take their word as information and many times check it or at least evaluate and weigh what was said. Some info is wrong, including mine, and some is right no biggie.

Most Forum regulars know SkooterG, and I don't believe he was bullying, etc, anyone. He had some legit questions and statements.

Jestal covered oils very well try searching for his posts.

Anyway, tires, oil gas, windscreens, GPS, helmets, riding gear, boots, etc. Personal preference.

Now go back to riding. ;)

Yo FJRBluesman, please ship me ten pounds of that special coffee! I sent you my mailing address by PM; ASAP!

I'm 62 years old, they really don't have to be virgins, just slightly used. A nod is a good as a wink to a blind horse!

Here we go again..

The mention of Jestal and the fact that his info is still here should be adequate info...... But then again, some just refuse to accept honest well researched facts..

I think instead of NEPRT Oil threads should be labeled ..

Nevermind..

This **** is simply Commode fodder.

Most definitely.

This **** is simply Commode fodder.
Strongly concur with the Sheep Admirer from Owosso.

In fact, even for NERPT, this thread is just a bunch of divisive horsecock. We're done here.
