What did you do to your FJR today?

First, THANKS, HotRodZilla, for the warning.

The screen shown in the photo is displayed when data-tethering the iPad to my iPhone stashed in the glove box. Google Maps is the only thing displayed while I ride. All fiddling around with connections, displays, buttons, etc, etc, has been done while stopped OFF THE STREET, because I have to remove my low-tech, leather riding gloves. (The white "cracked screen" thing is ..... I don't know. It isn't there.)

Yes, it has already distracted me a bit while testing: "You $*@@^!&$@* piece of shit! Why don't you work like I want you to work?" Arms wave, fingers get extended, shouting can be heard outside my helmet ...

Second, Big-B, the iPad is in an Otterbox protective 'envelope', which snaps into a hard plastic shell bolted to a dashboard shelf from cateye77. It is also completely below the windshield, even when the windshield is fully retracted. The phone is safely stashed in the glove box.

And lastly, SacrementoMike, I am engaged to be married and have no need for porn videos.

............................................

Perhaps an interesting point, Google Maps does not update while I ride. That is, if the highlighted route goes north on I-75 and east on I-285, that specific route remains highlighted even if I exit the highway and take a back street. The "You Are Here" dot follows where the FJR goes, but Google Maps doesn't recalculate the route.

That's weird, isn't it?

Got a new front tyre on my front wheel. Old one was a T30, lasted only some 4800 miles, much worse than I usually get. I have almost always run a BT023 and normally get around 9000 miles, that's what is back on.

So, very disappointed with the T30, but it really needed changing. It had worn to a flat-bottomed "V" profile, although the handling wasn't too bad.

The wear is sufficient that if HodRodZilla's UK cousin had stopped me for some minor infringement, he'd have taken one look at it and taken my bike off the road there and then.

I have yet to put the wheel back on the bike, I'm suffering from a debilitating virus that's been robbing me of all enthusiasm and energy for weeks. Might get it on tomorrow.

Maybe the photos don't show it very well, but that tire doesn't look so bad to me. (Curious of that is the GT or the regular T30)

I've always had some amount of trapezoidal shaped wear on any front tire I've run on the FJR, including the several Pirelli Stradas, PR2's, BT023's and the last T30GT. The cops definitely wouldn't give you any trouble over that tire here unless it was time for am annual state safety inspection.

My current T30GT is the EVO model, which is supposed to be better in the wet. I can't say I've noticed any advantage in that department, and the tire took a bad feathering wear pattern in the first few thousand miles when I ran it a little lower pressure during the EOM trip. Now it is noisy and buzzes when cornering, even slightly.

FWIW I generally get around 10-12k miles out of any of those front tires when running at 40 psi cold. I generally pull them off when they are below the wear bars, and don't wait for them to go bald.

I went on a COLD ride yesterday to celebrate MLK day! The temperature wasn't the coldest I've ridden in by far, but we were out for 3 hours and 125 miles. 28*F was what the bikes thermometer was reading while moving. The weather trackers on my phone gave similar numbers (between 27 and 30 degrees). I really wish I had the FJR wired up for heated gear. It's on my to-do list, but I really wanted it yesterday!

It was a non-GT. I normally run non-GT BT023, which is what the new one is. I have noticed no significant difference in road-holding wet or dry (not that I generally set out to test front tyre adhesion).
The law here is very strict on tyre wear, on a bike the tread must be more than 1mm deep over most (can't remember the exact percentage) of the tyre. This one was well below that right round the centre of the wear on both sides, worse on the left side than the photographed right. If worn below this limit the bike is concidered unroadworthy, with all the consequences for your present journey, license points and wallet weight. As a bonus, because the bike is legally unroadworthy, it is technically uninsured, which adds to your license points and diminishes your wallet weight accordingly. Same with cars, but they require a minimum of 1.6mm tread depth over most of the tyre.

Oh, yes, I run front pressure around 36 or 37 cold. Before everyone jumps on and derides me, firstly it's what my owner's manual recommends, secondly I've tried the 39-41 area and found the bike became incredibly harsh (the dealer had put 39 in it when I first picked it up, I nearly turned round and took it back it was so bad). Taking it down to 36-37 makes it still a little harsher than I'd like, but tolerable. And it is SO confidence inspiring after my Gen 2. The original tyre was the OEM BT023F, which lasted over 9200 miles with my 36-37psi and my nominal 147 pound bodyweight (currently around 138 due to the anti-gravity viruses currently resident in my body).

What's the difference between the iPad, and having an iPhone (say a Plus model) mounted up there?

I know the law, but just saying - even if you don't have one on the bike, most people have a smartphone mounted in front of them.

Really? Cause that's a little bit scary to me. What if I mounted a nice 55" smart TV in front of me and used cams to the front, sides and back to ride? Would that be OK too?

Of course I'm being completely facetious. And I'm as guilty as most anyone else to diddling with my GPS while riding when I should really be paying full attention to the ongoing saga ahead of me on the road. But, I ride with a GPS that I've found to handle a lot of the navigation stuff that otherwise might be even more distracting (like looking down at a route sheet or turn by turn printout vs hearing turn by turn prompts), and it also handles my phone calls seamlessly (which some curmudgeons say (rightfully, I think ) should be forbidden when driving or riding) with minimal intrusion on my attention. But, like it or not, we can not go back to 1965. Electronica is here to stay, for better or worse.

I get it, we are all dabbling in shades of gray as to how much we are being distracted while operating our vehicles of choice. How many of us really go down the road with no distractions at all? And clearly, less is better than more, but we do what we can.

Note to self...remind Uncle Hud of the "good old days" next year.
So today during lunch, I did a little checking of the board and clicked on it his topic. It starts to load and then I get the BIG WARNING screen. Our filter at school apparently flags the word "Porn Video".

Oh well, just have to look on my phone if I want to see this thread.

I suspect you've been flagged for this activity before... J/S.

Finally learned how to get into the Diagnostic menus yesterday. Leaving work CEL came on and stayed on the entire ride home from work. Bike ran fine but the light on bothered me. It's flickered on during cold starts a few times recently but has always gone off within seconds of starting. I'm not really very fluent at navigating the menus and what they all do but I'm concerned maybe TPS is going out? Days 238 and 239 are in the books for consecutive riding anyway.

Ordered a new TPS to have on hand just in case.

I haven't heard of anyone who has had issues with the TPS on a Gen II. It is a wear item but the version used for the 2006-12 bikes seems to be more robust.

Regarding the CEL light, did it store any codes? Do you have a Power Commander? When I had the PCIII on my bike, the light would come on and stay for a period of time; especially in wet weather. Can't remember the code but it wasn't anything to do with TPS. Maybe something about reaching limit for fuel ratio adjustment? Didn't hurt anything...

As stated, not too clear on the use of diagnostic menu. Can't say I saw any. After I got home and left it sit a short while started it up and no light. Rode it today with no issues.

No power commander, bike mostly stock with 68k miles. Plugs about 12k old with valve check and cct. All good

The difference in reality? Probably nothing. Either can be used for screwing off. The issue I see is that with a screen that big, EVERYONE can see it, and it's going to get attention. Mounted phones and GPS receiver small enough that most passing drivers don't really notice.

By what UH initially said, I was thinking there would be the map, speed, and other bike functions. If it's just a map, even if he gets stopped, he should be able to explain it away as a large GPS for older guys who can't see up close. Haha...Sorry, but that's what I'D say.

Given that and the fact he can't manipulate it with gloves on may reduce tendencies to get cited, but there's always that "rule book" guy, so I don't know.

Kinda cool what you did. Just wonder how practical.

Put my newly re-shod front wheel back on, no real problem in spite of the viruses in me making everything around heavier and more awkward. Hope my wrist-measured torque values are within specification.

Took off my bent brake pedal (how the heck did I do that?), started to attempt to straighten it. Threw away the detached bit the foot is supposed to push on, drilled holes in the remaining arm to cobble together the mcatrophy version of the missing bit. No picture, I'm so ashamed that I want people to believe it never happened.

Trip to dealer in the next day or two. If I feel up to it.

Back roads ride on the new 15. Had lots of fun turning the ECON light off.

Did you know.............................that when you switch from Tour to Sport mode, your arms get longer?

Checked diagnostic codes after work today, 14 and 32, then cleared them. CEL light has stayed off now the past 2 days. Bike running normal, day 240 consecutive days. Not cancelling the TPS I ordered, figure I 'll just add it to my personal inventory for the time being. Should I be concerned with these 2 codes? Never had any issues and bike is ridded daily.
