I bought an 04 in October of 03 having been away from bikes for 20 years without any idea that there were forums for this sort of thing.

On January 1st, 2004...after a 400 mile in 35 degree weather, I got bored and googled "FJR1300".

I found out a lot, and continue finding out a lot about the bike. But mainly I found out that there are cool people all over this country continent who will help a complete stranger have a rockin good time.

I joined because I ACTUALLY own an FJR.

I started drooling over the FJR after seeing one in a magazine article (2005 you still had to pre-order).

Then while getting a Honda V65 Sabre serviced, I saw one on the showroom floor. Apparently they figured out these were going to sell and put one of the mechanics names on an order form. Just to get one in the shop!

I was really being called to ride corners that were farther and farther away. The Sabre didn't mind going far away but had to be arm wrestled through corners! So I lured the wife into the dealer while running errands, and rode mine home the next day! It was a very Happy Fathers Day!

Was back at the parts department a few weeks later and saw another FJR parked outside. Tried to strike up a conversation but the dude seemed in a hurry! Thank God he was! He's the one who said " just go online and search FJR , there's a couple forums with a lot of info there!"

It was also my introduction to a group of motorcyclists who cared more about their bikes and riding, than they did about what they were wearing and where they were parked!

This place has been great for me! Never was much for Sycophanting(Yea, I had to look it up as well) around, so the BS has only been entertaining at best. The information on how to, and have you seen this, or worn this, or rode here, has been really fun. Totally boosted my confidence to do most of my own service. Met some cool peeps, ate some good food, rode some great roads.

Can't tell you how many times a "search" taught me something I didn't know I needed to know ( and saved me money by finding things already field tested to work with the FJR )!

Still like to search and still use the bin-o-facts. Kinda become a part of motorcycling for me.

I do remember being encouraged to "do something" and contribute, but then it's getting harder to think of something new. Guess I'll have to go look for a new road to ride!

Big thanks to this place and the community!

I didn't want an FJR. Actually I was looking at...

However, I was reminded that with no fairing, I'd once again be at the mercy of the elements in the winter, and TBH, I was tired of getting beat up by the wind every time I took any kind of a trip across the state. I'd never been on any trip farther than about 125 miles in my life, though I'd ridden motorcycles on and off since '66. HIgh speeds and long distances brought it's own set of problems on the naked bikes I'd owned...

I remembered years ago seeing an FJR at Daytona bike week. I liked the way they looked but knew nothing about them. While I was tossing around the decision, a friend and I were talking about bikes, and he mentioned that he might like to buy one. I recommended that we head over to the Yammie dealer, hoping that I could check for a used VMax, and he could look into a smaller bike for a newb. When we got there, I was greeted by a beautiful, lightly used black cherry FJR. I sat on it. I looked it over for a LONG time. I was bit. However, it seemed a little pricey, so I decided to go home and check the web for prices and information.

My google search took me to some place called the FJRforum. The first thing I noticed was how user friendly it was. Next I noticed all the pictures that accompanied many of the posts. It seemed to be pretty interesting, so I began reading. I spent days and days doing just that. I joined the forum within a couple weeks. In keeping with the integrity of your original post, Redfish, I discovered the word, "Newb" that first week, and knew I was one.

It's a good idea to know WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW.

I knew enough to know that I didn't know much... a new duck on this pond...

I learned a great deal about the FJR by just reading this forum that first week. I learned about the Friday dogpiles...

...and how that new guys that asked dumb questions ended up at the bottom in a hurry. So I just read and kept silent at first. I was still teetering back and forth between the FJR and the VMax, but the forum convinced me that I might want to take a ride on an FJR. I checked out a VMax forum. It didn't hold a candle to this one. I was really encouraged that help was just a click away if I bought an FJR. Within a couple weeks, I found a beautiful 05 FJR with 3800 miles for 6500 bucks about 15 miles from the house. I drove over and took it for a ride. I knew instantly that there would NOT be any need for me to test ride a VMax. I bought it on the spot. I forget what my first post was, but I kept my first efforts limited to simple questions and comments on existing threads. But I do recall that the first thread I started was about my pipes. They were seriously blue...

IMG_4291.jpg

I titled it, "Pipes are Blue and so am I," found here: CLICKY

I'd been a forum member for maybe 6 weeks by that time. I found the forum to be very helpful and encouraging. I was a little nervous about posting up my first thread, but I'm happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn't believe my...

...eyes. A whole bunch of guys posted some great answers for me. I was worried that something might be wrong because I realized that my FJR didn't look like the other ones I was seeing in the pictures on the forum. But some great responses relieved my fears, and several guys gave suggestions on how to get the pipes cleaned up.

Look at my avatar. It says, "Newbs need the forum." I know I did. But think about this: this forum needs newbs too. Their "lame" questions are a huge part of what we do. Without someone to pass along our collective experience to, we will very soon run out of reasons to post or read anything here. If joking around and chewing on each other was all we did here, I'd not spend much time on this forum. But this forum has shown that passing along experience, or working together collectively to help someone out... is a worthy cause. The forum has rolled up its sleeves many times to help it's members or a newb: it has a noble history. Is it not true that it is STILL better to give than to receive? That one thing, I believe, is what separates this forum from many others. For me, it was a great feeling to be able to talk to somebody about an issue I was having with my new (to me) FJR.

Dodging the dogpile

Could I have simply searched and searched in the archives and found the info? Maybe. I did try a little to do just that. But being able to talk to someone was SO MUCH BETTER. Consider this: are we really too busy to answer a question again? I"d like to add my voice to those who say... "so what if it's been covered before." I'm so glad I didn't get blasted for posting up that first thread about my pipes, even though it was mentioned before on this forum. I wonder if I would have stuck around if I'd ended up on the bottom of an FJR dogpile that day. I wonder if I would have ever made another post. As of this writing, that was something like 1450 posts... ago. It's not for me to judge whether my contributions to this forum have been worth anything, but a few crude words could have ended my time here -- real quick, after that first post. Make sense? That first thread was a great experience for me and I made up my mind that I was going to do what I could to return the favor.

I'm still working on that...

Hey, I feel better knowing that I am not the only one frustrated by "search" from time to time, and afraid to ask a question.

For me, its more of "I love my FJR, and this forum is the BEST forum in the world dedicated to our bikes". So my fears revolve around the disappointment I will feel when someone degrades this forum by treating other owners with disrespect.

That being said - I feel much better now.

Now - lets talk about tires.

Redfish.

Ha!!!! It's perfect: Check out this post from Oct. 2012. One of our fairly new members (at the time) posted up some questions and went through this same process that we've been talking about. I'm not saying I agree with all he said, but it does illustrate a point. Take a moment to read his post below.

Gotta love the software on the forum ripping right along here at 12:50 am in the morning. To change from one page to another on this thread (p.3 to p.2), it blazed in at a mere 91.3142 seconds exec. time. I'm sure that's my operator error or my computer, because it certainly has NOTHING to do with the forum. Can't remember what I was going to post . . . but it should be fun seeing how long this takes to post. Maybe we can push the times up to 5 minutes at high traffic middle of the night times soon? Really -- WTF is up with performance that is trounced even by the old EZ Board molasses?

Na, that's not it at all Fred. The forum only clogs up when the pipes get filled with bull-oney. Since the news media is buzzing about military action lately, maybe we need to send some troops out to the west coast to shape up their viewing/posting habits??

Getting close to the political edge there. Don't fall in.

Yeah, that PROBABLY explains some people's lag times, but I don't drink or smoke. Well, OK -- I've had one glass of wine in the last 4 weeks (this last Thursday out to dinner, so it was probably only 150 ml). And we've had a minor smoke haze in the air this far north from the American and Rim fires south of here. But not enough to clog up my internet access or make it a PEBCAK problem. And it DOES vary in loading time one day to the next, or even hour to hour, but it never "moves along smartly", and hasn't in some time.

This has been the worst disaster software upgrade I've seen on any internet forum site since I've had broadband. Sometimes I just log off after the first couple 20 to 90 second load times. I'm sure this is a monumental headache for the Admins, for which they're not getting paid, and for that, I'm sorry. I'm also grateful for the Forum being provided. But it is getting increasingly hard to want to click on this bookmark.

To get back on topic, let's not lose sight of the fact that forumites need to stay on top of things and NOT ask questions about topics that have been covered before, at least not without doing a search, the time for which has gone WAY up, since the area in which the forum really displays its speed is in loading searches.

Bring back EZ Board if we must -- at least it was faster than this latest downgrade, although I've been logging onto other boards running this software version that don't have these problems (and still can run features we had in the past, like showing who is viewing a thread at the bottom and what time the last post was made in a thread as a part of the info in the "New Content" search results). And then there's that nasty little lag in posting or editing that keeps causing the multiple posts that the offending poster can be pilloried for. Again, for Bounce in particular -- I understand and stipulate that it's me causing this phenomenon. Just wondering when I'll finally stop doing that, is all.

How appropriate that I've just had to log in three times (at interminably slow speeds) to FIX the F-ups the software just inserted between edits!!!

I made the same mistakes as many here do and had me *** handed to me by sythian, who no longer posts here.

Tim Bates took me by the hand and showed me the ropes.

I sure miss the banter between he and Radman...

For those that joined after we lost Tim and Rad walked away? You missed the best times ever witnessed on this place, or possibly anyplace on the net for that matter.

Anyway, now u fuks know why I act the way I do here. I had a great tutor.

Thanks Ray. Words chosen carefully. Stopped at the guard rail on purpose.

Interesting thread for sure! I joined right after buying my 04. I've belonged to many forums in the past and knew from experience how instrumental they can be when wanting to learn about your new toy. I've belonged to a classic Ford diesel truck forum for years, great group of guys and gals!! They have a big rally every year, I even hosted one a few years back! Lotsa work I tell yah!! Lol!

Anyway since it's confession time, lol, like others have already said I've posted a litle bit and never had my arse handed to me but man have I seen other people get lambasted!! Kinda makes you gun-shy for sure!! It's unfortunate too because as we found on the classic Ford board, the more you post and participate the more you get to know your fellow forum members. We didn't do go ballistic on the Ford forum, no silly moving your thread to the "you're a ******* for asking" category. Lol. Rallies are also great and I hosted one but even with the EOM in my backyard I have no real interest in going, and unfortunately it's because of this forum that helped me make that decision. I have met some great folks for sure, Fred W, FJRBluesman, the OLD GEEZER GUY ( lol), and others that I'm forgetting. Anyway i digress...hopefully the powers to be will wake up and realize growth in participating members is a good thing and the little cliques while fun for awhile don't sustain a forum forever, after all it's sounds like one board already fell when this one came into existence...unless you learn from the past, it has a way of repeating itself....just my .02.

Poor Bastage is paying support for her triplets... I suspect too much sun cooked ol' egg heads brain.

I started coming here soon after I purchased my used 04. I thought that this FORUM would be great place to meet other members sisters. Sorry it didn't work out between me and your sister but thanks any way Busta. In general I have found that if my thoughts or questions are reasonable so are the responses. I don't mind a little ribbing or bad language and that seems to be the accepted standard here. I hope that this place doesn't change to much because I like it here and I would bring my family to visit.

Best regards

Surly
