I have ridden across the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Ave, and a bunch of the Coastal highway from San Fran north to Fortuna. I can only imagine that I barely scrapped the surface. There is something special about riding along 101 and being in the fog along the cliffs, then rolling another half mile and being down on the beach, then another half mile and being dwarfed by the sequoias.

Magic!!

Of course. Duh!! Thanks for the correction. Highway 1 and 101 run together up at the top as you know and it cornfused me.

Anyway, I would go back in a second. Spent 2 full days in Yosemite with my son, brother, and nephew last summer. After a few days, we rode in the truck all the way up to and around the Olympic peninsula.

Oh no Bob - you didn't. This is a bucket list trip, man. No corner cutting happening on this one, bud. Minimum 2 weeks for me - maybe 18 days. By the time this trip comes, you will be almost done work wise - remember, we don't get to decide!!!!
I've caged PCH, but would like to ride it as well. Never been to Lake Tahoe - that would be super cool to see. At some point, I will need to sit with the map and really look it over.
I was kidding really. Just only so much time for this trip. I will be taking at least 3 weeks. And yes, I will be within months of semi-retirement. so I want to really enjoy my last "paid" vacation!

With this much time to plan ahead, count me in. Since it's an easy day ride from home to the Yosemite area, I shouldn't even need vacation time...I can just work my monthly bid around it.

I used to camp when I was a kid, but as an adult(?), my idea of camping is a Motel 6 or some fleabag mom-n-pop motel. I've seen a few nasty ones. I'm willing to spend a bit for a bed and running water.

Isn't retirement kinda like an extended "paid" vacation???
Fully retired, maybe. I will still be dabbling in something.
"Welcome to Walmart" ?

In Cali and NY, that will get you 15 dollars per hour in 2022!!!

So will "You want fries with that?" and "What pump were you on?"

ON topic..... Is there places that we can get to with the FJRs that are backcountry-ish?? As in....away from the throngs of people. Maybe leave the bikes for the day or two at a trail head (safely) and back pack into the "unknown wilderness"?? That sounds like a spectacular mini-adventure.

I had a talk with Pop this weekend. A very serious talk. We discussed the distance, the time away from home, his age, the uncertainty of dealing with "people you meet on the internet", different riding styles and speeds, and all the many things that can go wrong on a trip like this.
Definitely a concern. For anybody. But tell him, looking at the list, at least a couple of old codgers he can relate to.

Well, yes and no. I can't guarantee the "safely" part, in California or anywhere at all. But backcountry-ish? Oh yeah. There are lots of places throughout the Sierras where you can access the Pacific Crest Trail. Backcountry-ish enough for ya? Lots and lots of other trailheads beyond the PCT too. Leaving the bike for x amount of time? Up to you.

You haven't met this group in person yet, Fishy... I have met many of them and they are some of the finest, yet perfectly warped, people I've had the honor to meet. Just your type... ;)

Notice she said "some".

I can guarantee it will be a time that you and your dad will not forget. Mcy trips always have ups and downs...the ebb and flow of a trip. You will not forget this trip if you take it...but better yet, you will meet people that will become your friends for life, once met.
