    HD encouraging stealth

Since H-D failed in the attempt to patent (their) sound -- maybe they're trying to get rid of it...?

    Road trip to Dallas

Kind'a a value judgement -- there...? Best for whom? Mapping software will give you fastest, shortest, most scenic, etc. I'd suggest: it's time for a theme -- do you have any special interests/hobbies that could be pursued along the way? Many interesting themes can be woven into a...

    cbr250r

Agreed. One technique is to add a handfull of teeth to the rear sprocket. It saves some of the performance (altho, nothing can be done about the thin air and the overall reduction...). New, EPA-legal, street-bikes are often geared tall (to meet the emission regs.) anyway -- so, lower over-all...

    2003 Valve Adjustment

It does make a nice 'feel good' story -- but, changes in valve clearance (when they occur) are mostly a metallurgy issue between the valve faces and valve seats in the head (where there's no oil). Mobil 1, though, may have helped this early (Gen I) FJR -- prevented it from becomming a 'ticker'...

    Grindy Noises

The constant mesh gearbox design used in most motorcycles can (usually) tolerate full throttle clutchless upshifts. But, there are limits/differences in g/boxes, power-otputs, etc. It ain't all the same all-over... More sad news for the FJR (on top of all its other problems) -- it's...

    Fork Oil

According to the FJR FSM (at least, mine...), Yamaha gives no recommendation (neither in miles nor elapsed time) for periodic change of fork oil. Yamaha lists, in the FSM, both: Suspension Oil "M1" and Suspension Oil "01" or equivalent. In the FJR FSM under: "Disassembling the Front Fork Legs"...

    New FJR Model

Jeez..., I hope not...! :o Not with all the problems that've been reported on this Forum with the current 2 iterations... Reminds me of when the new Norton Dominator 500-twin was first introduced to dealers at a dealer-meeting in the late-'40s...(Norton had previously offered...

    cbr250r

While I'm sure Honda has made a very nice CBR250, it's really hard to best the 250 Ninja -- they've been great for a long time. :) One caveat for interested 250-ers: If you live at altitude (5K~6K feet, for instance) the lack of oxygen has a much more dramatic negative effect on the...

    Mobil 1 Racing 4t 10-40 oil

Shell Rotella full-synthetic is called 'T6' and is available in 5W40 viscosity. 'T5" synthetic-blend is available in 10W40 viscosity. Rotella "dino" is available in 15W40.

Handlebar wobble (it's not what you think)

OK, I'm with you -- we're tilting the whole bike with these changes. I still maintain that it's caster (rake & trail) that causes steering oscillations -- just like a shopping cart pushed too fast. Since the normal changes to a motorcycle's geometry (tilting) easily happen in a rear-ward...

2011 IBR - The Inside View

Unless the rider is from AZ (or, is going to be in AZ) -- MT. STD. Time. AZ doesn't do Daylight Savings Time (mostly...).

Handlebar wobble (it's not what you think)

Hmmm, I'm not so sure...? Yes, a steepened steering angle (less positive caster) will decrease trail. But, what's the correct amount of trail? As the m/c sags rearward trail may increase -- maybe too much? Conventional wisdom may suggest: More trail = more stability? I'm not so...

    Saddle bag lid removal

Yes, several times. Just bend the 'keeper' tab down at the end of the hinge-pin and remove the pin. To assemble -- slide in the pin and bend the 'keeper' tab back. You're welcome.

    Arctic, brown moose, 60mpg

Moose/s live in packs/families/groups (there must be a name?) in diverse areas -- rocky mountain moose, western plains moose, boundary waters moose, etc. -- and never the twain shall meet (mostly). I heard a naturalist give a talk on the subject... What-ever-ya-do, don't use a pencil &...

    Saddle bag lid removal

Sorry, I can't help you with drilling rivets... :( But, if all you want to do is remove the pannier lid? -- just pull the pins from the hinges. :)

2011 IBR - The Inside View

It's been my, long-term, experience that dealers, in general, and especially the guys in the back room (mechanics) want to help those with mechanical problems who are "out-there-doing-it." I think they 'identify' with the rider and would hope for similar treatment?

    What to wear..

Wear light colors/white with lots of ventilation -- including helmet ventilation (make sure you can breathe plenty of fresh air). Don't use much of a windshield. Hydrate often -- stop, get off and walk around often -- rest when you need to. + 1 -- U.S. 64 (Tenn.). One of my favorites. Some...

Handlebar wobble (it's not what you think)

Less rear weight bias and more front weight bias -- needed. Un-load or remove your tour-pak. Raise and/or stiffen the rear suspension. Lower and/or soften the front suspension. Use a tank-bag. Lean forward when riding (as opposed to Laz-Y-Boy -- feet forward -- 'Murican'-style). They don't...
