I watched the GPS tracking until the wee hours of the morning and was entranced with CW's route. She hasn't slowed down like some others. She went to the outer banks area where there's been evacuation for the hurricane...and she made it through. Maybe it was just a preference in order by riders, but I'm a bit skeptical the others are going to be able to do it as the day progresses. She may have been able to scoop up a bonus others won't be able to. ;)

Watching paces I think MK has also been keeping a solid pace after having snagged some Michigan stuff and getting through as another person shared with me....cleanly through the NYC area.

These are two riders I'm watching closely as the final days wind down. ;)

Since I don't know what any of those initials mean, somebody tell me...How's Reno John doing?
Check his blog here. It has the most updated information. He's blogging nearly live via a Blackberry.

I'm really enjoying John's blog. It's really fun to watch from the sidelines - sometimes jealous that I'm not riding and sometimes thankful that I'm not. For example, in John's posts about the rain, smoke, etc I was glad to be reading rather than riding. But then looked at the photo from Ben's Old Fort and felt that familiar pang of "Wish I was THERE instead of HERE!"

I wish I knew more about 'rallying' so I could fully appreciate the logic and understand the decision making process.
At this link, you'll find my writeup for the 2009 Cal24 Rally. It gives a pretty good overview of how a Rally works. Now imagine that multiplied by 10, and covering the entire country . . .

"Wish I was THERE instead of HERE!"
You and me both. B)

Hmm, He was in Manitou Springs (near Colorado Springs) area today, and this evening there were evacuations due to "suspicious packages."

Smells fishy, perhaps an "anonymous" tip to the police is in order :glare:

DCarver,
Please check out Craig Chaddock's routing tutorial:

Thanks Doug and Ken - I'm off to a good read.. :clapping:

If nothing else, I think it's cool that Jeff and Ken have signed onto the fjrforum! Could FJR's be in their future?

I think my next ride will involve more legroom than an FJR. Had Yamaha first brought out the FJR one year earlier, I would have had a 1st gen instead of my R1150GS. I used to run FJ12's back in da' day. I built my first one (a white/champagne '89) up with FZR1k wheels and forks so that I could put proper rubber on it. That was an awesome bike. I ran a '91 FJ12 in the '99 IBR. I only bought the K12GT over an FJR in '06 because of the 950W alternator and factory cruise. I'd jump on a R1200GSA in a heartbeat .... if it wasn't a BMW.

I'm really interested in the XT1200Z. However, I'm going to give that model about 2 years to shake out any 1st-gen bugs before deciding. Maybe I'll pick up one used in a few years and not have to pay the depreciation.

Anyway ... back on topic.

If you've been watching the SPOT tracks, you may have noted the following.

MK "frogpirate": Making great steady progress. Hit NYC and DC but got shunted off the outer banks by Hurricane Earl. He's now hunting bonuses in the south, which may or may not have been on his original plan.

CW "Bionic Pelvis": Wendy snagged the OBX bonuses, DC, and I think NYC, but got slowed a bit by the storm front in Buffalo, NY and through Erie, PA. She may have been planning to get the UP bridge bonus. That may be out of reach now. She almost looked like she was trying to cross into Canada at Niagara Falls but turned back south into the rain.

JJ "IBAARK": In a great position after Leg 1. I don't think he got the OBX bonuses but poked into the NYC area. He's a little behind the curve at the moment in comparison to MK.

IC "PushTheFreakinButton": Also in good position after Leg 1 but seemed to have missed some key eastern bonus areas in favor of the bridge bonus to the UP of Michigan. It's a little tough to tell exactly where this rider went.

I don't know the points for bonuses or even where they all are, but based on the progress of riders I'm thinking that it's going to come down to a battle between CW and MK for the win on this one. Wendy probably has the edge at this point.

I do feel RenoJohn's pain in turning around. Multi-day rallies can generate some huge emotional swings.

Well, I do know the points layout, and you pretty much nailed it.

I'll be at the finish in SLC this Sunday. It's gonna be interesting to see how it all tallies up.

Understatement of the year . . .

Great review from both of you who have been there done that...

Hey, sometime you should drop by the Hondarosa and I can tell you all about the one time I did a ss1k!

(hey, it's dog pile Friday night now!) :yahoo:

...and, back on topic, I hope Wendy kicks ass. She's truly a competitor and fine human. I was very impressed with her at our first meeting at checkpoint in So Cal. She rides, she wrenches, her hubby is a great guy and was helping her fellow (competitor) riders too. Good peeps both.

Seems like GM has a big ride to make the finish. Almost 1,700 miles, assuming no detours and 36 ish hours, I think the rally ends at 10:10am Sunday. At the end of 10 days that ain't easy.

I've been watching her track too. As of 11:20am PDT, she's about 1350 miles out if she takes the fastest route to the barn. She's going to have to run nearly BBG pace for the next 22 hours to make it to the finish on time. I hope she's been conserving her strength because she won't get much sleep tonight.

Wasn't it Peter Hoogeveen who had the IBR "in the bag" one year -- only to have an in-town small altercation at the very end of the rally that cost him the win?

I wouldn't wish that on anyone -- "it ain't over 'till it's over" -- good luck to 'em...

So GM decides to make it even harder and take the long way back to the barn, via the Mackinaw Bridge. I'm reckoning on 1,150 miles left in about 19 hours. Jeez!

Does anyone know what the DNF time window is?

Man, she's making it a nailbiter...and losing ground as far as an average to get back. The last night at a pure 65mph average....2 1/2 quicker than a BBG pace.....on the last night? Ouch.

Go GM....go!

She is gaining ground now, route is in her favor,,, I say she does it!

...and maybe the extra points from MI is what she needed. She was

willing to risk it all for them- she knows best her situation and she must

have felt up to the final push, I think she is toyin' with us!
