Auto Cancelling Turn Signals

Never owned a bike with self-canceling signals. My old MSF instructor, way back in '73 at Tachikawa AFB taught us to make a habit of always canceling the turn signal as part of the turn process. That habit is still with me, along with checking tire pressures and oil level. We had to supply our own bike; I had a '64 CB 125.

The algorithm for bike self-canceling signals is a little weaker than the mechical degree of wheel turn that cars commomly use. A timer has limitations due to varibility of signal light wait time. Never was an issue in my mind. Just another habit I practice, like looking where you want to go in turns or always stopping at stop signs or looking for red-light runners before proceeding on green. And always using a signal, every lane change, every turn, even at 0400 on a deserted back road. Those habits mitigate risks, just like bad habits expose you to risks.

Now if only all the drivers that text would put the phone down...

Saw this on another forum and don't even know if they would work on an FJR.

My '74 Honda came with a turn signal beeper. I liked it since it was my first motorcycle that actually had turn signals. Most people disconnected it.

I never had trouble remembering to cancel the hand signals i had used before that.

 
Finally dawned on me why the pilot riders at the Star Demo Ride events were so good at letting me know that my turn signals were always on. Yama doesn't believe in these! And I am terrible at remembering.

 
Not that I know of. I just simply got in the habit of thumbing the turn signal switch every time I turn at an intersection. I do it sometimes now even if I didn't turn the signal on in the first place. Do I still leave a signal blinking for miles? Once in a while. Not a big enough blemish on this bike to make me regret it for even a second.
Same here. I seriously wish I had self-cancelling signals, but if that's the thing I hate most about the bike that just means I don't have much to worry about ;)

Prior to the FJR I had a Goldwing which did self-cancel. But I also had the ZRX during that time, so I even manually cancelled the 'wing, often after it had self-cancelled, just to maintain the habit. And like you, I often cancel even though I didn't use them. But sometimes I still forget and think that can be dangerous. I tend to forget on group rides more, and I think that's because maybe I signal more often and in places I usually wouldn't bother. And maybe it's because I only do one or two group rides a year. Dunno.

That was my first thought too. I could imagine people all around me frantically trying to find the dump truck.

It uses position and motion sensors instead of odo and time based methods. It looks pretty slick if it works as described. They are currently looking for beta testers. I signed up, but haven't heard anything. But it's also based out of Solvania, so I don't have high hopes of it making it on to my bike.

Had auto-cancel blinkers on my 80's vintage Honda, used steering as well as other inputs to determine when to cancel and it worked real good. Several conditions had to be met before it would be allowed to cancel.

Ok, I didn't have time to read through everything but I get it, I should be able to remember to turn my signal off but the bottomline is that occasionally if there is a lot going on I will forget. The blinker lights on the instrument panel are too dim to see so there are times when I forget. Is there an aftermarket attachment or magnifier or something that will shine bright enough that you can see it through your helmet if you forget?

Paul, my ZRX has really poorly placed reminders. They're below the other instruments and I can't see them at all in a full face helmet unless I lower my head a lot. I'll glance at my instruments, but they're still completely outside my field of vision. On it, I added a couple of small LEDs down inside the fairing where I'd see it flashing between the speedometer and tach; they're hidden pretty well down in the fairing unless they're flashing. An unintended benefit is that they reflect off the back of the windscreen and are now impossible to ignore

The FJR reminder lights are much better placed, but on a bright, sunny day I'll still miss them. The ZRX is not fully faired, and it was easy. The FJR is a bit more of a challenge, but you might be able to find a small green LED -- here are some examples -- that you could mount in a more noticeable location. My only caution is to be careful about going too bright or they'll overpower you at night -- voice of experience talking. You could wire a single small LED with each light, or you could use a diode in the wire off each light and use only one LED.

So far, they don't seem to offer the Kisan for Gen III. I think it does all it needs to. My goal is not to ride off into the sunset with a flasher blinking for the next 30 miles, and if the Kisan will turn it off in the next minute or so, I'll be happy

The Safer Turn system looks way more complex than it needs to be, but maybe that's just me.

Update:

I just checked Kisan's site again, and now it's showing the SM-3 Signal Minder for the FJR through 2013 or 2014, depending on where you look.

I had the Kisan but in looking at the much larger GenIII flasher, front LED's...... dunno if it would work on GenIII......

Well, here's their answer. I'm a little surprised that all year models of FJR use the same one.

Yes, SM-3 is the correct signalMinder for your 2013 FJR.

It works out to about $90 for the early test, and $170 for full price.

I'm guessing the overseas shipping will be a complete deal breaker. I guessed $179 when they first announced it. I think they would have much better luck selling it for $90 than I do for $170.

The engineering geek in me is intrigued. I've been toying around with idea of building my own. I could certainly do that for less than $90. Writing the code would be the most time consuming part.

I've thought about it also, a 3 axis accelerometer, a timer, maybe a tap into the vehicle speed sensor and you're off. The auto cancel unit probably only costs $20 and that includes amortizing the software -- the unit costs $200 to cover the insurance for any all the lawsuits for real or imagined issues and accidents.
