Update on the Flat Top Poly:
I am curious about where you got the "Flat Top Poly" Tank from. I read through the other postings in this thread but couldn't find any specifics (but with 250 posts I might of missed something!). I checked the JAZZ website and I found a few tanks that look similar, but they have the fuel opening on the wrong side (what would be the bottom the way it is being mounted on the FJR.

If you had a website and part number on where to order this tank, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Colin

"Flat Top Poly: Mounting plate"
My cell must be larger than the one shown. When you get a chance would you mind sending the measurements of that base plate. I would really like to use this set-up.
I'm pretty sure all the poly cells are coming out of the same mold.

I'll try to dimension a drawing for you, but you could probably check out the idea quicker. Next time your tank is empty, just flip that baby over and check it out. Be sure to post a photo. I want to see if that vent line in yours sticks out too far to work well as a drain.

Keep in mind, I'm not recommending that anyone with the hole already milled in the wrong side actually use their tank as a Flat Top Poly. All I'm suggesting is that if you already have the tank and a GenI, verify that your results are the same as what I came up with.

It'll be a while before I can do any work on the FTP Mounting Plate. Prior commitments, Sorry.

You could order one from me.

;)

In fact, I've already verified that I can deliver a 10% volume discount. Maybe you want to organize a group buy.

edit: The only reason I'm suggesting that you organize it, is because like I mentioned in an earlier post, I've got a lot of prior commitments right now.

It sure was... I didn't even know these things were in the works a couple of weeks ago! I can't wait to start mounting mine up and conferring with everyone else as to how their install is progressing. This is cool.
If all goes as planned, I will be picking mine up Sunday pm with an install at Joe's and the first unscientific test run of the production model on the way home. Hopefully I will be able do a write it up and post on Monday. Weather is forcasted to be chilly and rainy but that won't stop this test.

Here's a little design tip:

Make sure the entire contents of your auxiliary cell fits into a 14"X14"X14" box. Is that 143" or 14"3?

(Of course, the only people who will benefit from that helpful advice are my competitors.)

Oh, what the hell I'm here to help. ;)

Why? I mean, why keep in under fourteen inches square? That's a very good question.

Because UPS is going to charge nearly three times as much for a box not much larger than that!

The tank in the upper left is S/N 2 (my tank).
Through careful surface scratch and weld heat pattern analysis, I have figured out that the tank nearest the camera is the one I got. Still having a bear of a time with that bulkhead fitting...

What is fighting you? PM if needed...

It seems that the rear subframes are not all identical. Mounting the same Tag-Along Tank on two different bikes might require a unique set of replacement grabrail bushings for each bike. We haven't figured out where the variation is. Evidently the manufacturing tolerances that are "close enough" for mounting a seat are too loose for one size replacement grab rail bushing fits all bike/tank combos.

I should have taken photos of the custom replacement grabrail bushings I made for eeksnake before I dropped them in the mail Saturday. The set of replacement grabrail bushing I sent with his tank were the right height for my bike, but too tall for his. The same thing happened with 01VFR and today I learned that Slonishku has similar issues.

I wasn't sure where to post this, Auxiliary Cell Design seemed appropriate.

I really like the looks of this:

Top width 12"

Front to back 10.5 "

Height 8.5"

My only concern would be the flow rate.
I need to follow up on the request for quote to have the support plates made. I've been a little distracted with Tag-Along stuff.

Then, once the plates are finished, you could mount one as high as you'd like.

The base of my cell is Top width 12" X Front to back 10.5"
I think that yours is more like 12 " X 12" . Sound correct?
In my notes, I have 12.713" wide 10.885" front to back and 8.675" tall.

The width and front to back dimensions are from the widest points. The sides taper down from there. It's a slight taper, approximately 1.5°/side.

Sounds good to me. Did you cut and install the cap and fittings or did they do it for you before sending it out?

If I were to buy one, I would prefer to have them installed.

I cut the fill hole, bolt holes and vent hole. The drain hole was in the tank already.

Joe you better have one of these with you next weekend, I'm curious to see the design differences up close :yahoo:

I have ran 2 tanks through mine so far and it works great, I'll be on the third fill when I hit CFO :clapping:

One of which one?

I have the Tanji style left over from last year.

I have my silver powder coated prototype.

I have 01VFR's that I need to return to him as soon as it's back from the powder coater. I've also got a set of custom replacement grabrail bushings for him.

I also have the flat top poly that still needs a rack to finish it off.

Attention GenI owners

I'm going to build a GenI auxiliary tank. A fellow Minnesotan has researched his options and decided there is nothing that exactly meets his needs.

It's winter

This is what I do in the winter

Thank God someone is willing to pay me to do this

There will probably be a group buy. The gentleman funding this project has the option to buy a single prototype, or a short production run with a five unit minimum order.

So far, this is what I know:

The GenI does not have a high/low seat option so I won't have to overcome that hurdle

The tank will mount so I won't have to compensate for variation from one bike's rear subframe to the next. Those GenII custom grabrail bushings were cool, but they were also more work.

The internal baffles will be TIG welded instead of tacked with a MIG

What I don't know:

This might be a Tanji style/over the tail tank. It might be a rear seat replacing tank. The guy writing the checks wants a Tanji in the worst way. I've got a few issues with that. 1.) Dean figured out an ingenious mounting system; I'm not comfortable ripping off his idea 2.) The tank sits a little too low 3.)I would rather have a rack and a trunk

I'm not sure Dean would mind. Since he's decided not to pursue this anymore, it's not like you're eating into his profits. If you like what he did and would like to use it, I'd encourage you to contact him and ask.
