Ari,

Linux instructions for playing those stupid WMV video files...

Pull the page up. Choose VIEW up at the top line, then choose display page source. HML source for the page will then be displayed in a new browser window. Then Control-F to find, then search for .wmv (that's DOTwmv). WMV tail end of the URL for the video will then be highlighted..

Right click-COPY the entire URL that is visible now in the display source screen (starts with HTTP). That is the URL you're going to pass to your Linux's favorite Winblows compatible video player, like Kaffeine or Mplayer or...

Works great for me with SuSE 8,9,10...

It's an MP3, actually. Here are the links for anyone else frustrated by this site:

You can just use wget to snag them. e.g. wget https://s1.putfile.com/videos/c4-27716424369.mp3

So - yes, ticking does sound like a valve tap. The valve tap in the files above is worse than mine, by a lot. But I've only got a little over 4k miles on my bike. Grrrr. Previously, I've heard very slight noises that I've written off as injector noise. Yesterday was the first time I heard something that definitely sounded like a very mild valve tap. Double Grrr. I've got an 06.

Ari, these Genesis motors have a lot of valve clatter, which is said to be normal. I was getting worried about the noise too, but it has never changed in the 26,000 miles since I first started to worry about it at 4k.

I run with quite a number of FJR's of various years and mileages. Most of 'em sound about like mine - some a bit louder some a bit quieter - not by much, though. I will say that Joe's '03 is freaky, stone cold silent. Zero valve train noise with about 35,000 hard miles on it.

Mine has always sounded like there is a bunch of silverware rattling around inside. No ticking at 13.5k.

That's good to know. Mine is only audible, to me, between 3K and 4K RPMs. It's definitely less valve tap than my 1985 CB700SC (with hydraulic valves) generates from time to time.

Mine is almost the same, but my "RPM range" for the "tick" moves a little with the temp. A cold bike will sometimes tick at lower RPM, but when warm, it always seems to be in the 3-4K range. It has been doing it for about 11K miles now. No oil on the exhaust pipes, no oil reduction between changes (pushed the last one 5K) and no other ill effects. :clapping: Just an annoying sound that I don't hear with the ear plugs in anyway! :D Oh, and sometimes, on rare occassions, it goes away completely... ...but never for long.

Timex made a fortune on the advertisement "Takes a Licking - Keeps on Ticking". Maybe we should just adopt that slogan.

The FJR has pretty much been proven to be a dependable bike. If you read enough motorcycle forums, you can develop a distinct paranoia for just about anything. I am of the belief that until it fails, just keep doggin it.

This might get me stranded someday but hell, I got the cell phone to get me home.

Well, we will have to play with my FJR at WFO. You see, I don't think it's a ticker. But a certain anonymous benevolent dictator thinks it is. I'll say this - it is one noisy SOB.

Background: July 2004, this newbie with his almost year old FJR took his first really long trip - to Moscow, ID, for WFO-3. Did my first SaddleSore 1000 and BunBurner 1500 on the way there, getting me admission to the Iron Butt Association. Sniff, sniff. Ahhh... the memories.

Well, a certain benevolent dictator who is technically gifted and knew a thing or two about the tick, declared mine a ticker in the early stages. He was performing a WFO TBS on mine when he caught the hint of the dreaded "tick". Armed with stethescope, he had a listen and affirmed mine to be a ticker. My FJR had 16,700 miles on it at the time. I wasn't sure I heard any tick, but could the technical guru be wrong?

Well, over the last two years I have come to believe that mine is NOT a ticker. It's noisy, but I have been pouring on the miles with nothing worse for the wear.

Fast forward to a month ago. At the Cal24 rally, this same anonymous B.D. (Benevolent Dictator) had a listen to my noisy FJR and declared it noisy, but not a ticker.

Which now brings us to last weekend. After some extremely spirited riding over 24 hours, I finished my little adventure in a parking lot where that same anonymous B.D. just happend to be. What a coincidence! Anyway, right away, he declared, "TICKER!!!", much to my dismay, pointing at it like those aliens did in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. People gathered for a listen. I couldn't hear a damned thing as I had my ear plugs in. Later, I started it up again. Sounded like the same noisy FJR I have always had. The A.B.D. saw me doing this, and proclaimed, "yep, it's a ticker". Well, golldarnit, I still ain't so sure. Even another FJR owner who had a ticker previously is not so sure it's a ticker. I heard his when it was ticking BIG TIME, and mine don't sound like that.

You see this is the thing, my FJR has 79,000 miles on it now. Surely if it's a ticker, it would have made that apparent by now right? And for further fuel to the fire, no oil in the exhaust, and based on the 160mph GPS top speed I saw that weekend, I feel confident in saying my FJR is NOT down on power.

Oh well, I got the 4 year Y.E.S. good to August of 2008. Gonna ride that sucka hard, put it away wet, and let the valve guides fall where they may. Only problem with that, is a really big ride I have scheduled about a year from now. I figure to have 100,000 miles on the FJR right around then, and really want to have it in tip top shape so as not to jeopardize that all important ride.

So we shall see, I guess.........

Well I`M IMPRESSED...by the fact that you have a high miler and it still goes like schnell despite all that mechanical consternation sound. But I am confused here. Wouldn`t the B.D. know exactly what a "ticker" sounds like? As such, u must have one therefore. If that is the case, in light of no degradation in the performance of your machine, u have given the rest of us a sense of renewed hope. And for that, we thank you SkooterG ! :assassin:

My 04' is sometimes noisey but I don't think its a ticker, I just put holeshot headers on it and no signs of oil in the old headers. 15,000 miles.

I know of one bike that was proclaimed a ticker, and then it was found not to be. The noise was actually coming from the headers. I'm no mechanic so I can't get into an argument about this. I am just relaying a story. They searched for a long time for the noise, and on a hunch swapped the exhausts from another FJR and it solved the problem. I never heard what was wrong with the original headers...but now they are replaced the bike is now quiet.

O'vale's believe it or not.

Although it displays some unusual behaviors, there is absolutely, positively NO doubt whatsoever that SkooterG's bike is a ticker.

I guarantee it.

When they take your cylinder head off and check the valve guides clearances, they will find every one out of tolerance.

No question about it.

That having been said, your ticker does display some non-traditional behavior. Primarily in the way that the distinct "tick" sound manifests itself over certain RPM ranges... it's not quite the same as most tickers. This may be why some who have listened to it have thought that it might not be a ticker. They are wrong. You have a ticker. I wouldn’t tell you this if it wasn’t so.

You can stay in denial as long as you want..... as long as you call Sunnyside and make an appointment for your tick repair in the late fall/early winter, well before you need to start training for your Little Ride next August that starts/ends in St Louis.... :D
