In the event your just joining us, let me save you the trouble of reading the first 96 posts with a brief summary. We've learned German, seen some bitchin' colts, found out that the ONLY gun Exskibum doesn't have is a 1911, Juniorfjr is a wheelman, Geezer has fat hands, Bounce flirts with double stacks (who wouldn't?), GalaxyBlue has excellent taste in firearms, Bust and Ex have sticky keyboards, Shiny and Beemerdons have Burros, Sheep & Colts heading for another state, FJRay will make his fortune selling forum members bullet traps and dreams of toothless sheep, Shiny is shopping for DryWall Stilts and just bought an annual pass to the Roseburg Zoo and TheZsdad is volunteering to teach a class that explores the differences between silicone and natural ****s! Lastly 1911 has succeeded in starting a thread that ended up covering just about every taboo subject known to man in 5 pages.
You couldn't wait could you?

Get a good hammerless revolver, or a small semi-auto.

* * * *

For ease of use, go with a revolver. Revolvers almost never malfunction, and if a round doesn't go off, all you do is pull the trigger again to advance to the next bullet.

Many of the new compact semi-autos are really affordable and very reliable. Just takes more practice to learn malfunction clearance. Once that is done, carrying extra rounds in a magazine gives way better reloading options than a revolver. Depends on what you are gonna use it for.
+1

For small, concealable, reliable and simple, my choice is a Colt revolver -- mine's a 1981 Detective Special with bobbed hammer. Unlike the S&W's of similar size, it holds SIX .38 Specials in the cylinder, rather than five. Lightweight, accurate for a 2" barrel, smooth action -- a terrific gun that they should never have stopped making.

For bigger holes and fed by magazines, I prefer a heavier semi-auto. Shooting a .40 or .45 out of a small and light weight pistol is hard on the accuracy and repeatability for me.

My favorite. John M. Browning would be proud!

Les Baer Custom.

FWIW- I didn't intend to start a Colt v Glock thread.
With a forum handle '1911', I'm supposed to believe that?

But then I like my 30-06 and .308 over my military issued .223 (except that full auto is loads of fun when I'm not buying ammo).
Do I detect an AR-10 & FN FAL admirer?

You need a different .45 to shoot, then. ;)
My computer was down for a while. I just want to say I spent a lot of money on my Sig P220 Carry Elite Dark thinking it would be my everyday carry. I'm finally getting it to shoot straight with some handloads, but still dialing it in. Factory rounds are a PIA and eject 8-10 feet away. A guy I know who was a champion pistol shooter can make it shoot well, so it isn't the gun. On the other hand, two other long-time handgunners who are pretty good didn't do any better than me with it. But I'm going to get that thing to shoot well for me or cry trying. :p

The 1911 I shot was a better shooter, but in a ****-hits-the-fan moment I want a double action in case of panic (it happens) and I forget the safety. Anybody who has ever been in a situation they thought they might die in, knows training is great but sometimes goes out the window. Simple guns go bang -- all you have to do is point and squeeze.

Truth is, my little S&W 642 sits nice in my pocket, is accurate and I actually carry it, which is the problem with big framed revolvers and autos. I love my Ruger GP100 but wouldn't carry it. Glocks are hard to break, light in weight, reliable and used ones can be found reasonably priced -- but they feel like bricks in my hand and I don't like 'em.

But to each their own. I like goats, Bust likes sheep .. the world still goes 'round.

I''ve been in love with handguns ever since I was issued a 1911 in the Corps back in 1960. While the basic 1911 isn't a very reliable piece with modern hollowpoint ammo, unless it's been ported and the ramp polished, the many variants of customized models on the market are a whole different story. I presently own several and like them very much.

I've had a concealed carry license since they were first offered in Texas. My choice of carry, however, is a Glock Model 19. The damn thing is butt ugly and not a great choice for target shooting but, it's extremely rugged and reliable.

Glock, Smock.

Colts are for Dolts :p

When are you clowns going to get with the times and get yourself a laser cannon...

How's the concealability on that thing? :p

P.S. My mother-in-law had a 4 inch cannon with a in a closet with a hand-made carriage the is 40-50 years old. She gave it to me for Christmas -- how cool is that?

Ray Slocum helped me figure out it should be shootable and when the passes clear I'm visiting him on the FJR -- or KLR if he ever gets another KLR -- for a black powder bash. The goats are entertainment! Should be a terrific day!

If we are changing to cannons, here is one of mine. I built this one in 84 and have used the **** out of it since. For noise I use 4 ounces of black powder and silica sand for wadding. For real shot I use a 3 lb. round ball over the same 4 ounces of black powder.

It weighs around 200 lbs and has a 2.5 inch bore. I have cannons from 1 inch bore to the big guy that shoots bowling balls.

These are what I think of when some one says cannon.

The New Jersey stood off shore and did a couple of fire missions over our air base in Viet-Nam, shells sounded like a freight train going over and if you could catch the angle you could see them.
