Planning to taking mamma thru the Great Smoky National Park, might want to keep an eye on this...Slide takes out Rt 441 in the national park
Perfect - this will provide the "goat trail" section for one of the routes...
That's kinda what I was thinkin...I'm sure by September, someone will have made a connecting path through there
Yah that slide looks pretty bad. Does anyomy remember how lond deals gap was closed? It was a year or two ago. I think it was closed for 4 or 5 months........I think

Surely you wouldn't try that without an S10 or GS? Everybody knows FJRs don't do dirt. ;)

Hell, a lot of times the detours are just as good as the roads you were "supposed" to ride. Still good to know ahead of time in case we have to detour

That's a pretty significant amount of damage; it'll probably take longer to fix than when the Dragon was closed. The Dragon had rock removal, hill stabilization, and pavement repair while 441's going to need a helluva lot more.

Deal's Gap FB account is reporting "Cherohala Skyway is closed due to a landslide near No Name Gap that took out 1 lane of traffic."

That area is really getting hammered with rain/snow now....

We've had 5 or 6 straight days of rain here...and I expect east Tn has had as much....I expect we'll see more landslides before it's over.

Now this is concerning. I don't think a trip to that area is complete with out at least one good rip across the Skyway. They will probably close it at the entrance points on either end as they did when US 129 had that rock slide.

Come on Wayne...ya just gotta ride the roads that are open (I think they'll both be open by September). It ain't like there's not an abundance of good roads down there.

They should be open by September as long as there are no more. The area is still getting rain and there are other slides. Just not as bad as these two. The cut slides are a little easier, because they just dump debris that has to be cleared and maybe minor road repair. These two slides are fill slides which have taken out the road as part of the slide. Much more involved to repair.

Might have to dig into the secret stash for sure. I'm agree that repairs should be done by September. I imagine the counties will be screaming for the state to get it done because it will have an economic impact on them.

There was a bridge out and a few other trouble spots that affected the composition of last year's routes. This year won't be any different. While we can't recon every inch of 2k miles worth of routes to make sure everything's perfect we'll likely find any serious problems and route accordingly. There'll be plenty of great rides. Guaranteed.

They will get pared down but I have 9 potential routes roughed out for 2013. Come Spring I'll head out and start investigating iffy sections.

Thanks! I haven't yet been able to convey to Wayne what a tough job it is to head out on the bike and pre-run EOM route sections. Oh, the hardships we endure!

Lee, you poor baby. We will all chip in for a masseuse who just happens to be built like a brick *********. She'll make all your hardships melt away! :)
