Just before my one year warranty expired on my '04 FJR I bought the four year extended warranty from D&H Cycle. So far I've needed no dealer repairs. So the money I spent on the warranty went down the drain.

How many FJR owners with extended warranties have used them?

Our herd mentality may have foolishly emptied our pockets.

I could have bought a few tires with that money.

It adds resale value and gives you peace of mind. What if your bike becomes one of the tickers? Small price to pay, IMO.

It's not a warranty, it's insurance. Insurance companies are like casinos. They're betting you the product won't break. You're betting it will. And just like in a casino, the odds favor the house.

Does that make it unwise to purchase insurance? It depends on the the maximum potential for loss. For example, if your house burns down, you probably cannot cover that loss out of pocket, so insurance against this risk is probably a good thing. However, if the maximum potential for loss is small enough that it won't hurt badly if you have to cover it yourself, then buying insurance against this risk is not a wise move. In the long run, you'll be better off if you self-insure against those risks. "Extended warranties" generally fall into the latter category.

Needed fork seals replaced at 8500 miles. Would have been 300 bones a side. Replaced under extended warranty, no questions asked. Extended warrany paid for in full and then some. It made me feel very smart for getting it. Some have used it, some haven't. If you have intentions of keeping the bike for even say, 20-30k, I feel that it's best to have it, for sure.

$600 for a fork seal job strikes me as a excessive. I have no doubt a dealer might quote that, especially if they know you're not paying out of pocket. The real question is: What would it cost at a reputable independent shop?

Even in a casino, there are *some* winners. But if there were more winners than losers, they'd be going out of business.

True. But the bottom line is that I didn't have to muck with it at all. No discussion. No looking for a good independent shop to to it. What is my time worth? I wasted absolutely no mental energy on this at all.

I have to admit that part of my ease with this deal is the relationship I have with the mechanics at this particular dealership. They are good guys and I have known them for some time. I walk in and it's like Norm walking in to cheers. They know I take pride in my rides and care for them as such. I talk to them and they listen.

A motorcycle extended warranty is the ONLY extended warranty I would EVER buy.

depends.... (like what 70 year old women taste like) ---

from D&H the price may be worth the piece of mind....

Had a defective front master brake cylinder replaced on the 06. Don't know the exact cost but with labor it had to be a couple hundred or so. That's almost what the 4 year extension cost from D&H. Don't leave home without it. PM. <>< ;)

warranty's can be great, I bought a new tractor a few yrs back and it has broke atleast twice a year since new and I have never had to pay for a repair :D Now when the fjr fork seal blew the dealer would not cover it so I did the repair myself. Now it need's to go in because it no longer will start when it is in gear with the clutch pulled in, It is really annoying to have to go to neutral to start it up.

I bought the extended warranty as soon as I knew for sure I had the "tick". I'm glad I did. I have over 18K miles on my FJR and I'm about to have the engine work done to rid myself of all the noise. Some have said that mama yama is/has/was fixing the "tick" even if you are out of warranty. Others have not had such luck. Either way, I was never questioned about the "cost" and "who will pay" when I began working on getting it fixed. Peace-of-mind and ease-of-maintenance are the two biggest factors I used to determine if it was worth while.

Just recently, I noticed one of my speedo lights is out. I'm sure I could fixe it and the part can't cost that much. Instead, I'll have it done when I take it in for the engine work. I don't have to worry about it or hassle with it. Another good reason to have the warranty.

All that being said, I agree with another post above... I wouldn't buy an extended warranty on much of anything else.

I've never bought an extended warranty on anything, until the FJR. Reason ? For $390, it offers me peace of mind till 2010, and also a small bit of trip interruption insurance. If there are any problems I want to be able to go to the dealer & say 'fixit' & not have to worry about what bill isn't going to get paid that month...

The added resale value is a huge advantage.

I bought mine used at A BMW motorcycle shop and the price was already attractive...no mention of a YES in the ad or when I got there. I was digging through the mech records when I stumbled across the YES paperwork, confirmed it with Yamaha and found out my '05, still had 3+ yrs left of warranty. Made it a lot easier buying decision

I have seena lot of people selling their FJR's on here and elsewhere, and on eof the first Q's asked (after "is it a ticker), is, does it have YES?

Well over $2500 in repairs so mine has paid for itself many times over. For $349 I got 5 year unlimited miles no deductible. Plus sure helps in the resale.

I got one for my 2006 A. No; I don't expect to use it just like my "crash" insurance. But if I do need it -- it will save me many $$$$.

I would not have paid the $800 --$900 my dealer wanted but D&H made it worth it in my opinion.

I will not be disappointed if I never use it -- I hope i don't have to.

By the way the light bulb in your speedo is not covered.

Well,

I think they are just taking our money, but I still bought it and am glad I did.

My bike is in pieces at the shop, real diff seal, second time and then transmission, all four gears doggs rounded and 2 bent shift forks.

I'm glad I am not paying of any of it, - the 389 through d&h

I am sure the bike would be sitting once not drivable for quite some time if not for warranty coverage.

Hi,

New to the forum. Waiting for the delivery of my 05 FJR1300 ABS, which should be in today or tomorrow. Dealer wanted $1000.00 for an extended warranty. Where are you folks getting your Extended warranties for around $300.00.

Thanks,

Cliff
