******* fail;Busted tool...busted the top part of the bearing...bearing didn't move.

Didn't even us the BFH.

To the dealer I go I guess.
OK, what am i missing here? Why is the top of the bearing busted? Are you trying to pound it out the wrong way?

Sorry i had to ask. If I am all fooked up say so.

Edit: $120 seems steep especially if you already have the bearings. But then again he may have you by the balls.

I stood the wheel (on it's side) on the bearing remover thingy (I'll get better pictures the 2nd time). Then you, gently, tap the rod into the bearing remover. Evidently when you do this on a concrete floor with a small hammer it splits the tool and breaks up the bearing.

I think the other tool will be here after I get back from my long weekend seeing the girlfriend...I should be nice and relaxed after that :p

Partial success. The replacement bearing remover part arrived and I've managed to remove the other (intact) bearing.

However, the busted up bearing is still in there. At least the outer portion. I carefully went in with a dremel cutoff wheel and got as close to the edge as I'm willing to go. I can get that part out...

any ideas??

I'll try to post pics later...but I have to work right now.

Screw work! fixing the bike is more important. Just had a thought. Dry ICE?

trying to cut it out with the dremel...got a little close.
If you accidentally cut into your wheel where the bearing goes, even if the nick is a few mm deep, don't get bent out of shape. You'd have to really cut a lot of material away, over a fairly large area, before you'd need to replace the rim. If you pounded between the bearing and the rim with a chisel, and dug up the bearing seating area, that can be cleaned up too. Softly softly is the name of the game when tapping bearings out and back in.

Do you have the bearing out, finally? Swallow your pride and post some pics (hopefully your camera has a macro function so they will show details in focus) here. I'm betting you are just fine. Maybe a little wiser, no?

no, the outer race still isn't out...I can't get in there at an angle which will keep me from doing further damage...

I'm taking a break for a while.

The cage is also frustrating me today..can't get the brake job done on that because the calipers bracket bolts are seized...having a blast with wheeled things...

Liquid Wrench penetrating oil does wonders on frozen bolts. Spray, wait 5 minutes and give it a try. Still stuck, spray again, wait, then go for it. Don't be stingy about hosing things down either. Usually good on the first try. Great stuff.

On the bearing race - Sorry to hear about all the trouble. What bit are you using on the dremel? I'd be tempted to dremel thru the side at some point, (or as close as I can get w/o hitting the wheel), then try and pry the 'C' in on itself to remove it.

Good luck.

Use a small cylinder shape stone on your dremel and cut 2 slots opposite each other out to the rim if you cut

into the rim a little the new bearing will still press as the locating surface is still intact, 80% would still hold

the bearing. I've done this many times on Yamaha atv rear housings.

Good luck!

I'm using a cutoff wheel on the dremel. I don't have a lot of bits for it and no money to spend on it right now....

That sucks. Perhaps let it sit until you can spring for a small cylinder stone or carbide bit?
